Hearing the Call

If we but listen
amid the din of this life
remaining faithful
to the calling of Christ

Hearing the call
the Spirit within us, burning,
raising us to our feet
to do our Master’s work

Called as we are gifted
members of the body
each of us worthy
by His gift on the cross

Witnesses in our season
while we share this earth
bringing Christ’s message to the people
to everyone we meet

By His Wounds

Healed by Christ,
by the shame He suffered,
restored by His wounds,
taking the lash for me
the stain of my sin
poured out on You
carried by You to Calvary
to the rugged cross
down to the pit of Sheol
making me clean again

Filled with Divinity

Equal to God, seated in glory
God is One, in three persons
the Father and the Son
Descending to earth
Filled with divinity
Love alive, coming near
emptied out, poured out
pouring down on us
becoming empty
a vessel, to be filled
human though holy
a servant ever
Filled with our stain
taking on our sin
dying on the cross
that we may live again

On Dry Ground

Standing where He leads me
through the trials of these days
on dry ground where there was water
within the fiery furnace
unharmed in the lions’ den

God is ever with me
I am protected
within my Master’s arms
comforting my spirit in daily struggles
and when joy washes over me

Build Houses

Where you find yourself
for God’s purposes
in the wilderness
this earthly exile
Build houses
and raise families
living in the world
faithful to God’s call
His witnesses on earth
while we live here below
until the day we wait for
when He calls us home.

Purpose

God knows, His purpose
showing us, His plan
in visions, our call
in words in the night
in ways we may know
to reach us, wooing
calling us, to move, to go
out into the world
to live in Him
submitting our lives
our nets on the shores
following, going
as we are called
to live out His plan
our purpose in this life.

Called Clearly

Clearly, when the trumpet sounds
called in the whispers of His voice
from deep within our hearts
from our complacency
from comfort, the familiar
urgently, called
from the couch, the TV,
from the desk, our work
out from the pews
out into the world
to go and do
to live, to follow
the calling of Christ
the voice of the Shepherd
all of our days
worthy of His name
to wear our robe and crown
forever, eternally
all of God’s days

Called to Come

Each of us in turn
at a time specific
known only to God
called to come
to come before our Maker

Too late for regrets
for what might have been
better to live each day
each moment of our lives
as if this may be our last

In Their Fragrance and Their Colors

In their fragrance and colors
the flowers of her gardens
defining her in some ways
the beauty that she treasures
sharing with friends and family
Nature at its finest
the gifts of the creator
in this His garden
the good, good earth
Lilies of the valley
roses in their season
the hill alive and tended
the lilies, the crocuses
the tulips in their turns
Just to name a few
Watching her move
coming to their fragrance
drinking in their colors
a smile upon her face

Justified by Christ

Not by the work of my hands
the things I have done in my life
only by the grace of God
may I live again

Justified by Christ
by his love alone
rising from the stone cold grave
to my heavenly home

The Price that was Paid

The price that was paid
that we would live again
taken on by our savior
taking on our sin

Bearing our shame to the cross
not for what we had done
only by the grace of Christ
is the battle won

We rise with him
on the last day
our lives redeemed by his blood
for this gift he came

Down from heaven above
to walk as a man
his love knows no end
from the beginning just the same

Love Unconditionally

Christ proving God’s love
love unconditionally
going to the cross
to take away our sin
Climbing the rugged cross
carrying our shame
shouting out forgiveness
for the pain we caused
knowing not what we have done
paying a mighty cost
loving us unconditionally
that we may live again

By our actions

Were it not for God’s grace
for the gifts of his love
pouring down on us
for the sacrifice of Christ
we all would be lost
By our actions we would be judged
yet our sins washed away
clean by the blood he shed
to live once again
as servants of our king
humbly may we praise him
witnesses of grace
ever and always

The Writing on the Wall

The judgment of God will come
in a time we do not know
all of us coming before the Lord
to explain what we have done

His book will be open
to the pages he will look
asking us to account for our lives
the choices we have made

Will we be like the king
who oppressed his people
or will we be like true disciples
following the call of our master

The writing on the wall
will come in due time
best that we are faithful
to the calling of our God

Seeking Only the Holy

Ours to follow
to trust in the Lord
seeking only the holy
not the things of this earth

Not following the edicts
not bowing to false idols
cleaving only to Jesus
following the way of the cross

Standing Like Daniel

We are called
to be counted
among God’s elect
standing like Daniel
alive in the lions’ den

To be like his fellows
walking in the fires
holding fast to our master
not submitting
to any earthly power

Going into the world
confident in God’s grace
believing He will be with us
walking right beside us
in whatever trials we face

The Sovereignty of God

More than any earthly king
any ruler here below
a god of metal or stone
The sovereignty of God
beyond our human control

Able to protect us
making us from dust
to guard us in the storm,
the furnace of this age
or in the lions’ den

The Illusion of Control

The world wrapped in a lie
the self-centeredness
man upon a pedestal
though we are made
of clay and His holy breath
as if in the image
made us equal to God

The illusion of control
more than free will
as if we are the creator
rather than his servants on earth
So arrogant his lie
forgetting our station
the work of his hands alone

Only the Master providing
giving us our rest
resting where He leads
in this troubled earth
yet peace overflowing
calming our spirits
trusting only in God
resting where He leads
resting in Him
ever in His loving arms

Psalm 23 (King James Version)
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the
paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Pray for the Foreign Land

Clear instructions
commanded by God
called where we are
in the words of the Father
offering love, peace
wherever we find ourselves
even in a foreign land

Pray for the city
the country of our exile
wishing them the best
that we may do well
that all would prosper and thrive
until God comes again

Sink Down Roots

The diaspora of the world
temporary citizens
our future in heaven
for eternal birth
For these days
while we walk the earth
to sink down roots
to plan and reap in season
living in the world
Pray for our neighbors
our brothers and sisters in the land
though we are exiles
trusting in God’s plan
Faithful to His command
a witness to His love
offering hope to all we meet
until He comes again

Willows Dancing

Pure white clouds
like pulled cotton
partially transparent
translucent, shining
a living backdrop
for the willows dancing

Arms moving like octopi,
sea anemone fingers
with pom-poms of green, silver
dancing to the autumn breeze
the rhythms of the dance
a mystery to me
dancing for a hidden master
singing praises for the season
to the creator, our king

In Words of Color

The changing of the leaves
the season of autumn
oranges and reds
and pure simple yellows

But words of color
more varied than these
to explain, to visualize
what we actually see

A yellow finch of the weeping willow
the cranberry of this maple
maybe the brown paper bag
tanned hides of the oak
or the pumpkin of another

We are blessed with a vibrant palette
below the azure sky
needs a crayon box of words
a cornucopia of colors
to get it just right

On this Road with Us

Our Savior joins us
whether we know it or not
there right beside us
all the days of our life

On this road with us
in our joys and in our struggles
offering salvation
if we would let Him in

Inside the doorway
sitting at table with us
revealing Himself completely
in the breaking of the bread

His sacrifice immense
beyond our comprehension
the Creator of the universe
climbing the cross for me

Descending to the blackness
the pitch of the grave
rising in victory triumphant
that I may see His face

Speaking to us
walking with us
right beside us

The Other Disciple

Each of us journeying
following the path
each of us gathering
carrying our cross

We are the other disciple
unnamed, on the road
walking with Jesus
all the way home

He is beside us
on our path, in this walk
sharing our struggles and triumphs
all of our days

Christ is with us
His Spirit indwelling
calling us to go, to share
in service to our King

Walk to Emmaus
September 30, 2010 to October 3, 2010

-------------------
Into this Story

We are called, our lives revealed
our days written in this story
in this journey of faith
leading home
Into this story we see ourselves
the questioning disciples
unable to believe
proofs written, handed down
finding Christ, in the breaking of the bread
in the sharing of a meal with a stranger
unnamed though we are
we are there, walking
needing to know
to understand
needing to believe

September 4, 2009
Luke 24:13-35
Walk to Emmaus
after posting The Unnamed Disciples to Facebook

----
The Unnamed Disciples

With Cleopas, walking home
on the Road to Emmaus
Leaving Jerusalem, on a journey
traveling from the city of David
wondering what is to become of His ministry
now that the Master is gone
So much pain, so much confusion
not truly understanding these things

Walking on that road
joined by a stranger, seemingly unaware
unaware of the events which have dominated our days
from the triumphant entrance, hosannas and palms
to the cross, to death, to the grave
Reports of the empty tomb, of his rising
but emptiness mainly
The stranger sharing, what is this he says
the prophecy of the Messiah
in the life of our Master
the scripture fulfilled
Walking homeward
entering in
Our savior lives!
in the breaking of bread

We are the unnamed disciple
walking with Christ
so unsure, so troubled
when we should have joy instead
Believing, if we but walk with him
look to the scripture, to the words of old
his life, his ministry, all of this foretold
The words he shared with Cleopas, with us as well
as true today, as on the road to Emmaus
the road home, to our Father
walking with our savior, with our brother
Sharing the good news with the others
until all of us have heard,
to the ends of the earth

Be Fruitful

In wherever we are found
wherever we live
where God has led us
this is where to begin

Be fruitful in our endeavors
all the work holy
if directed by God
the work will be multiplied

All of our days guided
if we will be led
the whole world to be redeemed
all of the people fed

God Has Placed Us Here

For some purpose
fully known only to God
God has placed us here
to continue the work of Christ

We are all gifted
by the creator
each of us a part to place
in the work of our savior

In this time
in this space
we are to toil
until Christ comes again

God Has Planted Us Here

Our lives for a purpose
when we submit to His will
God has planted us here
work to be done still

To go where we are called
to stand in the breach
love of God to share
to everyone we reach

God’s purpose not ours to know
to answer his call
to serve our neighbors in need
to give to God our all

Raise Children

While we are yet in exile
standing on foreign soil
far from our homes
where we truly belong
We are called to be faithful
to be fruit, to raise our children
a living example of God’s love
in how we walk on earth
Ours is the task
in our time and place
to bring the message of God’s grace
to show the face of Christ

Bear fruit and multiple
grow in the land
be faithful where we are sent
heeding God’s command

Ours is to do the work
not to anticipate what’s next

In This Wilderness - 2

Exiles in this wilderness
far from our home
called to be fruitful
to bear his message of love

Stand in the storms
confident in God
His love sufficient
to bring the world back to Him

We are His servants
the workers in the field
doing our tasks in our time
as the Lord has planned

Going into the wilderness
far from our home
bearing his gift of grace
to the whole world

In This Foreign Land

God has planted us
in this foreign land
to serve a purpose
only he understands

We are to be fruitful
our shoulders to the wheel
our lives a witness
to how his love can heal

Grow Where We Stand

Our calling, active
to grow where we stand
to center our lives on Christ
to go where He commands

Our lives to be fruitful
wherever we are planted
our roots deep in the living waters
of Your word oh Lord

To spread Your holy message
offering love in Your name
seeking ever to be faithful
as to the reason why you came

A witness in our time and place
abiding in the vine
growing where we stand
to bring healing to our fellow man

Words on Her Door

Words of comfort
of hope, of truth
the promises of God
written in meter and verse

God telling us something
in each of the scriptures
something to hold onto
to change our very lives

Words on her door
the canon of the bible
offered daily
to remind of us You

Holy scripture
down through the ages
speaking then as now
if we listen to the word of God

Not subject to change
to erosion or earthquake
not rolling down
crumbling into dust
God ever steadfast
ever and unchanging
His love and protection
in this we can ever trust

Utterly Incapable

I am utterly incapable
when I go on my own
unable to accomplish
the goals on my own

Trusting in God
He does provide
all the strength coming
to do the Master’s work

Confident in Him
right by my side
going where I am led
without guile or pride

He guides my feet
when I listen to Him
more work to do
oh Lord let us begin

Lean on Him

Fathom your frailty
your utter weakness
but trust in Him
and lean on God

Able to do all things
with God in the front seat
we are riding with Him
if we let Him take the lead

Hoping in Him

My heart hoping
in the coming of Christ
His return to redeem
the least and the lost

To bring us home
to our eternal rest
in this all believer
as safe and truly blessed

Focus on God
on his calling to us
to go and do His work
while we are here on earth

Each of us is charged
to use the gifts we have
to offer Christ to all
to lend a helping hand

Grounded in the Lord
on this rock we stand
confident in the future
just as our creator planned

Centered in Christ

Our focus, our compass
centered in the Christ
God who came down to earth
to raise His children up

He is our star
our guiding light
in his life we find
we have new sight

Able to venture
out into the darkness
to bring His message
to the ends of the earth

Leaning on Christ
heeding His Spirit
stirring deep within us
to guide our trembling feet

Hope in Him

Believe in God
in His ability to provide
all we every need
He is right by our side

Ever faithful in our trials
lifting us up
right with us in our struggles
filling our cup

God can be relied on
He is the rock of all ages
our strength all of our days
blessings in all the pages

Falling on the Mums

The rain falling heavy
on the autumnal tableau
the vivid colors of autumn
on the mums below

Watering the fall garden
the blooms tightly packed
no need for human efforts
God providing the rain

Washing our world a little cleaner
washing away the dust
the colors likely more vibrant
when the sun comes back out

The Trees in the Cabinets

The reams and reams of paper
the trees in the cabinets
files after files
lives written down

The trees that were slaughtered
butchered and used up
the paperless office
hasn’t caught up
with our appetite yet

Sermon - "Whom Shall I Trust?" by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, September 26, 2010, Suncook United Methodist Church

Pastor Ruth Foss
September 26, 2010
Luke 16:19-31 the Voice Bible
Psalm 146:1-5, 10 the Message Bible
1 Timothy 6:17-19 NIV Bible

Whom Shall I Trust?

A reading from the book of St. Luke; chapter 16 verses 19-31; The Rich Man and Lazarus (I’m reading from the Voice Bible translation):

Jesus often spoke in parables to teach the people around Him. These parables were told in a way that they would understand what Jesus was talking about. . . much like the stories that we tell our children so that they would understand what we are trying to teach them. This parable has really made me stop and think about how I am living my own life. What do my actions say about who I am and my faith in God? In whom or what do I trust. . . ?

This rich man had to pass Lazarus each and every day but this rich man chose to look in the other direction. He lived a life of luxury but kept it all to himself. He relied on his own money and not God’s providence. He had all the good things in life but did not share the blessing. We are blessed to be a blessing. Was this man afraid to trust God for his “daily bread”? Did he trust in his worldly wealth over his heavenly wealth?

This rich man spent his life living for himself and did not “care” for. . . was not concerned about. . . his own family. . . he did not share about God in his life time. . . did not share about God’s goodness and mercy and providence while he was alive. He was actually to late in his sharing. . . while he was alive he wanted someone else to teach his family instead of doing it himself. His concern for others didn’t happen until it was too late. . . he was already dead and being tormented in the “land of the dead.” Did he really believe God’s word about how he should live his life? Why did he wait until it was too late? Why are there blinders on some who rely on the worlds treasures and not on the treasures of heaven?

In death. . . this rich man learned that doing what is right has eternal consequences as well as ignoring what is right. Now don’t get me wrong. . . this rich man probably thought that he was righteous before God. He more than likely went to the temple each time and called on the name of the Lord. (We know this because he called Abraham “Father Abraham”. . . he knew what the scriptures said about his heritage as a Jew and that he was a descendent of Abraham) He probably even thought that he was prosperous because he was righteous. This man could look past the beggar. This beggar must have done something wrong to be in the situation he was in. This must have been god’s punishment for this man called Lazarus. My question is. . . how did he know the beggars name if he really didn’t take notice of him. . . hmmm...?

Well I am sure that this rich man had a big surprise when he died. He probably thought that someone messed up. . . he was righteous and didn’t deserve what he was getting. Righteousness and love for God causes us to reach out to those around us who are lacking. . . it causes us to care about others. . . it causes us to continue the work that Christ did while He walk this earth. . . it causes us to feed and clothe those who are less fortunate than we are. . . it causes us to share the blessing. This man did not live out his faith by showing compassion, love and mercy. He ignored Lazarus who was right under his nose. . . ”

And then we have the other character of this parable. . . we have Lazarus. . . now. . . Lazarus had nothing. He relied on God’s grace and providence each and every moment of his life. He seemed to be invisible to those around him. He was so hungry that he was willing to eat whatever fell on the ground from this rich man’s table (which must have been a lot if he would be able to survive on it. . . what a wasteful man this rich guy must have been). He had no one to advocate for him. . . no one who cared enough about him to help in his time of need. This poor beggar didn’t even have a chance to tell others about how God had provided for him in his life (remember. . . this man was virtually invisible. No one wanted to be near him. He must have had a stench about him with those sores and all. . . he probably had not taken a bath in a very long time. . . ). Even in his death he was unable to reach out and help. . . to share about God’s providence to him with the rich man’s brothers. . . to help them make a change in their lives. Or does this Lazarus’s life able to help others generations after his death? What lessons can we. . . the descendents of Abraham. . . learn from this parable? What or who does this parable make you and I think of? Is this man, in the parable, teaching. . . reaching down from heaven to share water that will quench our thirst. . . about God and His goodness and providence? I think so. . . Whom shall we trust. . . the world and it’s riches or Heaven and it’s eternal riches. . . The way of the world or the way of God. . . Life on earth or life eternal? You choose. . .

So what are some ways that we can reach out to others. . . those who are invisible to society at times? Well. . . yesterday there were two walks that did just that. Two walks that made a difference in someone’s life. There was the walk for Juvenile Diabetes and the CROP walk for hunger. These walks helped those who are not able to do it on their own. These walks showed them someone cared. These walks were answers to prayers. . . they were the sharing of God’s blessings with others so that they too may be blessed.

Another way that we as a church reach out is through the Our Family’s Table. There are people there who are in need. . . people come to be with one another. . . to share the load with one another. . . to have the sense of a family that cares. This is a way that we share and show God’s goodness in our lives and in the lives of those who are served.

You see. . . the moral of this story is that weather rich or poor. . . the only way to heaven is faith in Jesus. . . and that faith causes obedience. . . which causes us to be in mission in the world. . . sharing the Good News of hope, compassion and love; not with just our words but also in what we do. Is there someone in your life who needs your help? Is there someone you know who needs to hear about God’s goodness. . . and not only hear but see it in action? Is there someone you know who needs a “wake-up call” about how they are living their life? Why not share with them? Find a Lazarus and show them God’s love and meet their need. . . find a rich man and tell them about Jesus and His ministry on earth. You never know when it will be too late. . .

Let us pray. . . Loving, Eternal God. . . we thank you for your word and how it teaches us to live a life that is righteous and good in your sight. We pray that you would help us to see those who are invisible around us. . . give us eyes to see the world as you see it. . . embolden us to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. . . help us to find ways to reach those who seem to be unreachable for your glory and the glory of our eternal home in Jesus Christ. . .

Amen. . .

Loving Touch of the Hand

So much in the touch
the loving touch of the hand
resting briefly upon us
transferring affection
the depth of caring
only touch can achieve

Going into the world
being present with our neighbors
offering more than mere words
in the work of our savior
Going further
reaching out to them
offering our very selves to them
in the loving touch of our hands

How’s This Life Working for You

If we actually listen
to the voice of God
what would we answer
when our Master calls

How’s this life working for you
do you truly feel in control
are you really better off now
seeking after the world

Are you happy in your heart
chasing the brass ring
when all God asks of you
is to come, follow me

When You Feel Unburdened

It almost seems that we are mindful
wanting to be ready
to give our lives over
when we feel unburdened
when we are at peace
forgetting that our strength
all we need in Him

God’s voice calling to us even now
wanting us to come to Him
to answer when He calls
to turn from the world
our focus on the earth
to seek instead the Christ
and our eternal birth

Pieces of Love

Bits of grace
pieces of love
offered to us
from God above
all of us can share
what we have been given
sharing with the world
the wonder of God’s love
able to redeem
to restore all the lost sheep
gathering us all
to bring us in to His courts
in true relationship
in the arms of our King

Give Up Your Life

Christ’s offer to us
of redemption, salvation
contingent on our accepting
of His grace for us
yet more than that required
what we are to offer
giving up our lives
in humble offering
Choosing to follow
to be led by Christ
to go out into the world
and spread his message of love

When We Say Later

The Spirit calling
ever present
when we say later
Christ says come
not when we are unburdened
when we feel ready
God’s calling in His time
come, come, follow me

Turn toward God

Like James and John
Like Peter and Andrew
called from our lives
to follow the Christ

Each of us to turn
from the world
to turn toward God
the path of our lives
to be conformed to His plan

Giving up control
the wealth that we have
the things of this earth
that seem to dictate our path

Change our perspective
from selfishness to servant
following the Christ
to continue His sacred work

Turn from the World

Each of us to turn
to turn from the world
leaving the past behind
and following our Lord

He is calling us
to go out into the world
to spread His message of love
so all will have heard

Each of us to do our part
to go when we are called
whether we are on top of the world
or in the pit of despair

God calling us
to go and be Christ
to share his love for man
with everyone we meet

Love Your Neighbor

God’s command
to love your neighbor
not just for those who we like
but for all whom we meet
God’s love to be shared
through our hands and our feet
our walk on the earth
so Christ they will meet

The Lord Didn’t Say

The Lord’s calling
to the disciples, to us
to leave the nets on the shore
to come and follow me

The Lord didn’t say
when you believe you are ready
we are to answer His call
to go where we are led

Walk with Me

God in Christ
still calling to us
from the pages of the word
and from deep inside of us

Yearning for connection
to share the Emmaus Road
the journey of our lives
that will lead us home

Walk with me He calls
take up your cross
My yoke is light when we share the road
that leads to heaven above

Come to Me

God’s call to us urgent
for He grieves for our sin
wanting us to turn
that He may enter in

We are His children
the beloved children of God
His heart aches
when we are estranged from the Lord

Wanting us to come
when He first calls to us
but standing in the doorway
waiting for us to let Him in

When You are Ready

God calling ever
come, come to me
follow the Savior
in Him liberty

Come when you are ready;
but oh please come
my arms ever open
to let you come in

Come when I call
oh please here my plea
my grace sufficient
my love for you complete
