The grit of His Passion

Being there with them
tasting the dust
drinking in the moment
written for all of us

Not just the printed page
watching in the present
going much deeper
drinking His Passion

Hearing His blood
smelling His pain
seeing the shame
the agony of Christ

Hearing colors,
tasting His life
His sacrifice for us
alive in that dark night

The grit of His Passion
more synapses firing
awash with the senses
our bodies alive

Tasting the martyrdom
drinking of His sorrow
emotions rising
not understanding it all

“Sensing the Passion”
series of poems based on
segment on how babies,
when they are wearing a brain cap,
to do EEG measurements, don’t always
have the visual cortex light up
when they see something but sometimes
have the auditory cortex light up,
as if they are hearing the image, the colors.

True Essence a spirit

shimmering, a light
unfocused, soft edges
hard to see
to the naked eye
true essence, a spirit
a body of light
God alive with us
God’s Spirit to guide

Healing Waters

Healing waters flowing
tears from our eyes
letting emotions well up
not holding them inside

God calls us to be honest
to be straight with him
real with our feelings
letting the waters flow

Cloaked in her scent

the smell overwhelming
cloaked in her scent
the fragrance as a body
reaching out, to touch
emotion overflowing
washing over him
cascade of memory
alive within
not knowing the ending

God a Woman

His world, his vision
colliding within him
not wanting to believe
God a woman
not what he expected
not his belief
his mind spinning
no purchase, no anchor
spinning out of control

Shattering his image of God

sure of one thing
an image of the divine
but merely an illusion
held in his mind
shattering his image of God
that which he knew
giving way in an instant
when she came into view

sure of delusion

falling into terror
overwhelming self-doubt
hearing voices, laughter
spinning about
as if in a dream
not believing his senses
sure of delusion
wanting to be grounded
but unsure of himself.

so easily falling from my lips,
“I’m done, God.

It makes no sense.
How am I to go on.
I am not at peace.”

assuaging my fears
God walked beside me
healing my brokenness

A note from God - 2

What would we say
how would we react
if God sent us a note
if God spoke directly to us
would we believe this was God
reaching out to us
would we have answered God’s call
if God sent a note to us

not to sacrifice

we will not be asked to follow
to jump off a cliff
to climb the cross
not to sacrifice
as Christ did
he has defeated death
we are asked to follow
to walk in his way
to submit our lives to God
but we are not asked to give our life
to save us from the dead
Christ already paid the price
the debt already paid

revealed in our bodies – v3

Revealed in our bodies
the light of Christ
how he suffered, died
how he gave up his life

Light of the Savior
God’s love within
healing us for heaven
as we repent of our sin

Revealed in our bodies
our very lives
how we share, we serve
we fight to survice

Light of the Savior
God’s love within
sharing a bit of heaven
while we serve here with Him

grafted in – v2

in the vineyard, the garden
in the hands of the gardener
we are grafted in,
pulled from the world
Like a living shoot,
a new branch,
in the vine of the vintner
grafted in, entering
into the body of Christ
A shoot added to the vine
that give us new life
grafted in, included
into the family of God
Our old roots replaced
with the love divine
grafted in, growing
into the body of Christ
Each one together
sharing our new life

But this was Jesus – v2

I sat transfixed, in the synagogue
watching him read
from the ancient scroll
I heard Jesus’ words
my friend in the pulpit
someone I had known
I had lived beside, all of my life
He rose to read scripture
but what was he saying
I know this man, this neighbor
how could he claim Isaiah
that the prophecy was fulfilled
in our hearing, this time
in this moment as we heard it
read aloud by Jesus
our neighbor, known to us
how could this be, fulfilled
we were hanging on every word
all eyes upon him, anxious,
what was he saying, blasphemy
soon our hands upon him

A Bittersweet Cup - v2

The cup, which we share
a cup which he accepted
a bitter cup of sacrifice
a cup he did not want;
asking for it to be taken from him
from his lips, from that moment
that he would not have to drink;
but a cup from which he drank
a cup of our sorrows
which he shares with us today -
A cup of servanthood, of forgiveness
a cup of salvation

On the journey – v2

Unseeing eyes, despair
With Cleopas, walking
I, the unnamed disciple,
struggling to get home
there on the road
wandering in our ache
our inner turmoil
alone and lost
on the journey there
when Christ came by my side
holding me when I stumbled
leading me ever home
revealing God’s promise
