God, always with us
ready to reach out to us
in our brokenness, our doubt
in moments of joy or fear
God’s love constant
steadfast, eternal
wanting to be with us
all of our days
A heart in our backyard
the snow melting
growing, in the shape
a Valentine’s from the Lord
Maybe a brief reminder
God is with us
in every season
in trials and in joy

Needing Christ
Needing Christ
fully human, utterly divine
to restore the connection
to undo the harm
the breach between God and man
since the fall
Not of our own doing
not following the law
only the grace of God
the sacrifice of Christ
washing away our sin
with the blood of the lamb

Eyes Wide Open
Snapped to attention
the change in the weather
Christ speaking and the waves
the winds calmed to stillness
Eyes wide open
as big as saucers

After The Storm
The boat resting on the calm sea
after the storm,
the winds and waves stilled
all made at peace
by the carpenter, the shepherd
our brother, our master
We journey in faith
if we but let go of the cares
the worries of this world
What must it have been like in the boat,
after the Lord calmed the seas?

Psalm 23 (King James Version)
1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the
paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:
for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Surely this was Death
Cast out of the garden
because we had eaten the fruit
broken the first law of God
listening to the snake
Aware of more than we ought
wisdom with a horrible price
cast out of the garden
in our nakedness
Death, in absolute terms
a breach between God and man
never to be sealed under the law
only by the blood of the lamb

If the fruit was not eaten

Denying Their Sin
Calling this a myth
because the word sin was not there
their nakedness revealed
because they had eaten the fruit
Their disobedience not a sin
the snake knew more than them
just gaining knowledge,
becoming more like God
No original sin,
not in the garden at least
murder, by their son
the beginning of sin

A Forty-Day Season
The days of Lent
a forty-day season
able to change our lives
if we would let them
Reflecting on the sacrifice
our savior going to the cross
the meaning of God’s grace
his infinite love
The unworthiness of man
not enough to stop him
choosing to go to Calvary
to seal the ancient breach
The stain of sin from Adam
and those made by each person
all washed away by his blood
at the end of the season.

A Holy Lent
The words entering into worship
prayers from the pulpit
that we would observe a holy Lent
with disciplines of old
renewing our faith in Christ
Calling us to change our way
the moments of our days
during the forty-day season
Reflecting on our savior
coming face to face with our lives
changing from our evil ways
Repenting and prayer
fasting and self-denial
reading and meditation
on God’s holy scriptures
coming closer to God

Before We can Celebrate
Before the rising of our savior
the joy of Easter morning
coming face to face
with the reality of his grace
Coming to the road,
the path Christ walked with the disciples
the way to Jerusalem
leading to the cross, the grave
Spending time with Jesus
the man and the son
learning the lessons of his life
before his work was done
Going with them in the land, into the temple
in the crowd with the Sanhedrin
before the judgment of Pilate
going to the cross for us
Giving up little things,
spending more time in worship
prayer and fasting,
living God’s holy word
Before we can celebrate
the bright morning of Easter
spending the forty days
leading to the cross, the grave

Spiritual Preparation
Before I can worship
truly joyful
before I can sing
of the rising of my king
Needing to walk
along with the disciples
to be with Christ
as he goes to Calvary
Time to spend
on the dusty road with them
slowing down, in my day to day
to understand the moments
his amazing grace
Before Easter, living the season
forty days of reflection and prayer
drawing closer to the Christ-child
the man who chose, out of his love
to climb the cross in my place

The Smell of the Burning Palms
Still fresh in my memory
the smell of the burning palms
the smoke thick, wrapping round me
as the joy burned away
The ashes gray, thick before us
sitting on the altar waiting for us
praying deeply, listening to the words
reminding us of Christ’s sacrifice

A reminder of Christ’s going to the cross
The little things that we give up
things we add to our days
denying ourselves of chocolate, TV,
spending more time in the word, in prayer
Each a reminder, to be purposeful,
thinking of Christ going to the cross
choosing to sacrifice all for me
that I may live again
Taking on my sin, my stain
washing me clean with his blood
something to awesome, so hard to understand
knowing I do not deserve such grace
Lenten season upon us
hoping to draw closer to him
in the little things that I give up
in the things I do in his name

Different than the New Year’s Resolutions
The prayerful things, fasting
what we give up for Lent
different than the New Year’s resolutions
lying in the dust, abandoned
Walking differently, thinking about our savior
choosing to change our lives
as a reminder of his sacrifice
Giving up a bit of our selfishness
spending more time with the Lord
Hoping in these talismans
these memory reminders
these bits of string tied around our fingers
that we would be forever changed
by the story of God’s love, his grace
and the sacrifice of our savior

So Unlike the Advent Story
This season of our faith
from Ash Wednesday to Easter
the season of reflection, of Lent
so unlike the Advent Story
No angels, no shepherds,
no magi traveling under a star
The story of our savior
purposefully following his master’s call
walking the dusty road
to the city of David
his day of reckoning in Jerusalem
Painful for the faithful
these days leading to the cross
aware, like the tax collector,
of the depth of our sin
Understanding the price he paid
only in part, knowing only from our perspective
what it meant to descend from heaven
to go from a king to the man on the cross
walking the earth as a mortal
when he was the son of God
Joy at the end of the story
these days leading to his glory
rising, defeating death and sin
our lives forever blessed
But drawing into prayer,
fasting and studying
mindful of the horrible price
my savior paid for me

A Season I Need
So much of the rest of the year
the happy, joyous side of our faith
the coming of the Christ-child
the gifts, the angels and shepherds
smiles upon our faces
The Epiphany, the baptism,
even in his teaching
not deep enough reflection
on what he came to earth for
his dying for my sins
In the Lenten season
these forty days laid out before us
the real message of Christ
the depth of God’s love for man
revealed in the path
the journey to Jerusalem

Stepping Out in Love
Our lives, in our beliefs
more than stepping out in faith
to truly act upon our convictions
the model of Christ
stepping out in love instead
Putting on Christ
listening to the spirit
the voice of God
speaking from within our hearts
Going out, onto the waters of uncertainty
doing the master’s work
because we have been called
come, follow me
Living love, the nature of God
for our family, our neighbors
being Christ to someone in need
Going as we are sent, humbly, as servants
projecting the light of love
into the darkness of the world

In Confessing His Sin
In confessing his sin
his humble estate
coming before God
knowing he should die
In ashes and sackcloth
mourning our distance
how far below God
in the nature of man
But not for all of us
his petition for himself
praying urgently
for the mercy of God
So we should join
with this sinner, just like us,
bowing low, repenting of our sin
humbling approaching
the foot of the cross
begging God to accept us
with his loving, open arms

In Humility Righteousness
The prayers that they offered
in the story of Jesus
the Pharisee and the tax collector
both on their knees
In his humility, righteousness
living honesty
understanding more
than the one who studied the law
Seeing himself clearly
knowing his failings
where he had fallen short
to live worthy of God’s love
Facing himself truly
humbly bowing
begging for mercy
from the all-powerful creator
In his humility, righteousness
justified before God
able to stand in God’s presence
at the end of his days

Help Beyond Their Reach
An indictment, in this land of plenty
so many, of us, equally
Uninsured, needing services
falling between the cracks
help beyond their reach
living on the streets,
prisoners, in fear
of what may come
More, far more,
meager coverage
most of us
knowing one accident, illness
could lead to the poorhouse
Something wrong
in this land of plenty
prayers lifted up
that all would be covered
that none would fear the future
for want of insurance
that all would know peace
the love of their neighbor
in this Lenten season
following the Christ

Poetry Where You Live,
Raymond A. Foss
Confessing our need for God
Aware of our station
coming to the rail
confessing our sin
our utter need for God
Humbly coming,
approaching your altar
like the tax collector
barely able to speak
Praying fervently
our petitions painful
asking for your forgiveness
though we deserve the cross
Confessing our need for God
in our manner and our words
knowing we are a sinner
in need of his loving grace

Trusting in Your Great Love
In spite of our failings
our sinful nature
we live assured
trusting in your great love
Your promise
to love, redeem us
lived out in the Christ
God come to earth
His life, humbly
as a servant going
fulfilling the master’s plan
submitting to God’s will
Teaching, healing
offering hope where he went
demonstrating God’s nature
sharing his infinite love
Going to Jerusalem
though he knew the rest
the pain he would suffer
the shame of taking on our sin
The love of God
manifest in the sacrifice
the resurrection and promise
he would return once again

His Face Set on Jerusalem
The shift in the story
the climax fast approaching
his face set on Jerusalem
his time coming, to fulfill, complete,
to live out the master’s plan
Humbly going
as a servant
the path foretold
as the creator planned
so long, long ago
These days of preparation
of prayer and fasting
of reading your word
humbly waiting
getting closer to your grace
From Ash Wednesday to Easter
the story of the Christ
his purpose revealed
in his journey to Jerusalem
to change the world forever
by his infinite love
in his act of absolute grace

Be Merciful to me, a sinner
Falling to his knees
praying humbly
knowing himself
confessing his sin
praying honestly to God

the almighty, maker of all,
would be merciful to him

Our Hands Open
At the altar rail
pausing, in prayer,
waiting for the bread
for the cup
waiting for You
to feel your presence
our hands open
to your great love
Pour out your grace
fill our hearts
love overflowing
make me a vessel
sharing you

What He Did for Me
Coming to this earth
walking as a man
going to the cross
humbly, a servant
judged for my sin
dying in my place
What Christ did for me
his sacrifice, this high priest,
becoming the offering
into the fires of hell
to redeem me from death
Going into the pit,
blackness of the grave
rising to conquer
vanquish my stain,
death itself no more
my fate, to rise with him instead
at the end of my days
walking this lowly earth

The Joy in His Rising
Not in his dying
however amazing
his choosing to go
to the cross for me
So much shame,
so much pain
he endured for me
bringing me humbly
falling to my knees
Joy in his rising
on the third day ascending
from the grave to the earth
to let us see his face
Rising in triumph
over sin and death
walking with us
until he ascended to heaven
Waiting, anticipation,
for our savior’s return
fulfilling his own promise
just as his life fulfilled scripture
knowing in my bones he will come again

Pain in His Dying
Even as we enter
the forty days of Lent
pain in his dying
palpable, within me
Knowing how undeserving
this cracked vessel
my life in the world
my feet certainly made of clay
That he would come
from heaven to earth
descending as a human
That he would go
from a throne, a king
to the cross, a criminal
His love so profound
more than I can imagine
my life so unworthy
for his redemption
Bowing in prayer
to think of these words
to even begin to utter
the power of his grace

the forty days of Lent
pain in his dying
palpable, within me
Knowing how undeserving
this cracked vessel
my life in the world
my feet certainly made of clay
That he would come
from heaven to earth
descending as a human
That he would go
from a throne, a king
to the cross, a criminal
His love so profound
more than I can imagine
my life so unworthy
for his redemption
Bowing in prayer
to think of these words
to even begin to utter
the power of his grace

Preparing for Easter
In fasting, in praying
in the mark of the ashes
preparing for Easter
in penitent submission
No longer the babe of Advent
the child of Christmas
the one of Epiphany
Not even the man,
living in Nazareth
the one who called
the fisherman from the sea,
come, follow me
The son, the fulfillment
the Messiah illumined
the one shining on the mountain
heading to Jerusalem
This is the Christ,
the one who now is risen
But remembering the days
leading up to the cross
Our sin too apparent,
our lives slowing
bowing in prayer
at the foot of the cross
Trying each year
to be mindful of his sacrifice
to conform our lives
to the way of the cross
More humbly,
a servant, listening to the spirit
trying our best
to become more like Christ
Our savior triumphing
even with our sins upon him
going to the cross
but rising from the grave
Turning our eyes
our lives toward the Christ-child
reliving the final days
of his life here on earth

Beauty
The question on “what is beauty”
my mind immediately
calling up the quote,
“beauty is in the eye of the beholder”,
as if there is no single concept
no single truth
the question, what is beauty
But the idea of public art
paid from the government’s coffers
homogenizing, making dull
the richness of art
Beauty, all around
wherever we are
color and light,
texture and shape
nature and man-made
all of it beautiful
something singular
even in the universal
whatever it is that catches
our own eye

Lent Beginning
Forty days of focus
reflection on his journey
the walk of our Lord
heading to eternity
Going before us
setting the example
the righteous life
by the spirit of the law
Walking toward Jerusalem
from the countryside
into the center
the belly of the beast
Shining his light
glowing since the mountain
the spirit guiding him
on the journey to the cross
Putting a spotlight
on the hypocrisy of the leaders
the rigid dogma
forgetting the love of God
Showing a different model
a loving presence
choosing to heal and sooth
the ache of the people
Pressing on, leading inward
to the triumphant entry
into David’s city
fulfilling the prophecies
Teaching the disciples
preparing them for later
after he had gone
to sit back upon his throne
Suffering for us,
choosing to sacrifice
to take on our sin
a living example of love
Climbing the cross
dying in anguish
the stain of our sing
the full price forever paid
Rising on the third day
ascending into glory
the rest of us waiting
for his return some day

Gathering the Burnt Palms, the Ashes
Out behind the house
gathering the burnt palms of Sunday
the ashes of Wednesday
for us to use in worship
to remember this season beginning
the Lord’s journey
from the mountain, glowing
to the cross, dying
the way of our savior
so must ours be
The sadness of what had to be
to reconcile us to God
mindful of my sin
preparing to wear the ashes
the joy of the Sunday
the sorrow of Wednesday
all of the story remembered
in the murmur of our prayers

In Sadness and in Gladness
Entering the time of Lent
mindful of his sacrifice
the walk of our Lord
after the transfiguration
In his purposefulness,
his eyes set on Jerusalem
the passion, the trials
his sacrifice in our place
Mindful of the rest
the story of our salvation
the price he paid
but what we received
at the end of the story
Being present,
in this time of choosing
in whom we will follow
the way of the world
or the way of the cross
as was chosen by our savior

The Palms into Ashes
The joy of that Sunday
the dancing children
the swaying palms
our hands, bodies
moving with excitement
The flames igniting
eating up the palms
ashes dark, burning
reverting to dust
The depth of our awareness
the awful truth of our state
praying humbly
about what we did to our king

For the Leaders
For the leaders,
the presidents
those who have guided our nation
prayers for their vision
when we have held true
to the beliefs we hold dear
lasting and vital
the rock we stand on
Standing up for the right
the principles we stand for
sharing the things we hold dear
a beacon of light to the world
Our current president also,
and those who will follow
that he and they may continue
standing for our nation
what we believe
projecting our strength
out into the world
our democracy, our love

Answering Our Unspoken Prayer
So many times I have witnesses
God’s amazing sense of timing
answering our unspoken prayers
even before they are uttered
Setting something in motion
bringing someone into our lives
changing the course of our history
in moments of grace and delight
How much that is a mirror
held before unbelieving eyes
reminding us of his presence
his loving providence
God there with us,
knowing us before we were born
giving us gifts both great and small
wonders to behold
Caring for us, even when we turn away
when we deny he even exists
right besides us, all of our lives
there when we turn to him
Gifts to amaze us,
surprise us completely
stopping in our tracks
falling to our knees
Thanks to your our father,
son, holy spirit
all of the ways you grace us
fill us with your love

Before She Asked the Question
Sometimes we wonder
at the providence of the Lord
the providing of our creator
seemingly out of the blue
But we should remember
even when we don’t understand
God knows us, even before we are created
from before the of creation
to after the end of time
What we think of as coincidence
is but a bit of God’s grace
answering our prayers
even before they are asked
God’s gifts, so loving, so complete
beyond our comprehension
meeting our every need
our day to day, our manna and quail
and special moments of grace

Great Gifts
How profoundly different
how much better than our own
are the gifts of the Lord
not even enough,
the distinction of creation
all of the world good
by man very good
Great, even that
not a strong enough adjective
the wonder of God’s gifts
to the humbleness of man
our commonness evidence
when compared with his glory
all we have to do
is look upon our face
How much more,
the offerings of the creator,
the savior of man
in the gifts he gives us
life, creation,
a future in heaven
the unmerited sacrifice
taking on our whole sin
Bowing humbly,
when we let go
turn our lives from the world
and return to God
Arms open, just like the father
prodigal’s all
when we return home to him
All our sins, the judgment of our lives
all of the stain, washed clean by the Lord
His gifts big and simple,
eternal and daily
make all we give
pale in comparison
causing us to bow in humble praise

Matthew 7:11
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”

Transformed/Transfigured
Each of us changed
transformed/transfigured
if we let go of the world
and claim the name,
children of God
Our lives shining
in Christ’s glow ascending
able to follow Christ
by the Spirit’s guiding
Our lives turned over
changed forever
walking as children of God
going into the world
messengers of his love

Our faces shining
When we let the spirit
the love of God guide us
when we let go of the world
and follow Christ’s example
our faces shining
with the glory of the Lord
Our light shining,
when we offer ourselves in his service
his hands, feet, his voice in the world
answering our savior’s call
Not needing to go to the mountaintop
to ascend to the heights as they did
able to sense the presence
the love of God with us
God living right within us
guiding our way in the world

His Glory Plain
His glory plain
shining upon his face
Christ changed
from the man he was
claimed as God’s own son
There on the mountaintop
lit by God’s glory
the new Moses
leading the people to freedom
out of our bondage to sin
In the days to come
after the transfiguration
teaching his message of love
inexorably leading
To the confrontation
the sacrifice
God going to the cross for us
to redeem us, to fill us with his glory
His light shining,
his spirit living
going with us
shining inside of you and me

The Glow of God
The glow of God
his light, his presence, his glory
shining on the face of Moses
the face of Christ
upon the mountaintop
God in the cloud above
speaking to the leaders
commissioning them to his service
changing the face of the earth
Leaders, disciples
guiding the people
emissaries, missionaries
bring God to man
Descending the mountain
teaching the people
the love of God revealed
his light shining in us too
in each believer’s heart
going into the world
to share his message of love

Not Hidden Under a Veil
The face of the Christian
just as the Christ
alive, glowing with God’s love
not hidden under a veil
So we should live,
our faces shining from the light
the love of God for each of us
offering his son, that we may live
going to the cross for us
The lessons of Christ
if we would but listen to him
all we need to know in the world
loving God and our fellow man
believing in him, away from the world
following our Master’s plan for our lives

The Glow of Christ Reflected
The disciples, all of us changed
when Christ went to the mountaintop
The presence of God shining
lighting his face
there for the disciples to see
The glow of Christ reflected
from that time, that place
to the disciples, down to this age
each of us his brothers, his sisters
in our faith, shining
with God’s heavenly grace
Going into the world
changed, lit from within
the spirit guiding our way
following Christ all of our days
his light a beacon for us
Hope in his promises
those that have been fulfilled
by his coming to earth
assurance too in our future with him
because of what came before
God’s love, a light come into the world
our brother, the Christ, the way
leading us from the mountain
to the plain we walk upon
leading us home to God

Hope in his promises
those that have been fulfilled
by his coming to earth
assurance too in our future with him
because of what came before
God’s love, a light come into the world
our brother, the Christ, the way
leading us from the mountain
to the plain we walk upon
leading us home to God

The Glow of Christ Radiating
The glow of Christ radiating
transformed on the mountain
under the cloud, the presence of God
the voice of God speaking
claiming his son
telling the disciples to listen to him
His light shining,
there on the mountaintop
his glory revealed to the fishermen
his disciples seeing the true nature of Christ
brilliant, his face aglow, his countenance
Touching the disciples,
changed in that moment
no longer the carpenter’s son
the days more urgent
when they went down
his words with more power to them

Listen to Him
The voice of God
speaking from the cloud
claiming Christ
giving a command
as with Moses,
Listen to Him.
Anointed, his face glowing
a leader for the people
his transformation
witnessed by the leaders
Going from there
steeled for the work
following the call of God
Doing the work, as his disciples
leading to his suffering,
the cross, the grave
But with him to the end
the end of their days
faithful, the spirit within
a path started on that day
Christ shimmering, brilliant
his glory on the mountaintop

Listen to Me
The dual nature
God from the cloud
above the temporal plane
above the mountaintop
God in the Christ

Listen to me,
to God with you
the voice from the cloud
commanding us all
the disciples there
standing in our place
God speaking
that the words of the Christ
are his words of love

Something Important to Say
No matter the words
how much we immediately understand
listen to what Christ offers
he has something important to say
Listen to him, God’s voice from the clouds
speaking instruction to the disciples
to really listen to Christ
follow his words here below
The parables, the lessons, all he has to say
something important for you and me
the God incarnate, walking as a man
teaching us all how to live
Glowing, transformed, on the mountaintop
the carpenter’s son, the king
shining with the love of God
all he said and did showing us
the true nature of God

Glowing Like Moses
Glowing like Moses
so was the Christ
standing on the mountaintop
changed forever in that moment
no longer the carpenter’s son
Claimed by God
the voice from the cloud
this is my son, the beloved,
listen to him
their lives never the same
when they went down
following his heavenly call
The fulfillment of the law,
the prophets in him
the Messiah come to life
God’s son walking with them
leading to Jerusalem, the cross
Taking on our sin
the stain of our guilt
becoming the offering
glowing like Moses
in all of his being
doing his master’s will

Our Faith Changing Us
Transformative, if we truly believe
acting upon our faith
going where we are led
doing our master’s work
Our faith changing us
we are born anew
radiant, shining with light
the love of Christ evidence
in all we say and do
Out into the world
not staying in our churches, our pews
being present in the world
Doing the work of the Lord
being his messengers of love
