Christ’s words of healing for us
offering us his comfort
peace because of the Spirit
dwells, walks with us
living in our hearts
speaking words of power
trust, do not be afraid
rising within our beings
giving us your peace
calling to us ever
leading us to serve
going with us ever
out into your world

The Spirit with us
Christ giving us power
to walk through the waters
the Spirit with us ever
living within our hearts
Guiding us when we tremble
when our clay feet fail to rise
offering us comfort
peace Christ alone can give
Do not be afraid
stand in the breach
offering ourselves to our Maker
and love for our neighbors in the street.

With us forever
The Spirit here with us
forever, to the end of the age
guiding, if we will follow
walking in our Savior’s way
Teaching us, in wisdom
the power of God’s love
healing us in an instant
with the fire from above
Revealing God’s truth
the wonder of God’s love
calling us homeward
to our mansion waiting above.

A harvest as promised
Share Christ’s message
go where He leads you
set down your nets
into the deep, deep waters
A harvest as He promised
more souls for the kingdom
going where He leads us
out into this world
Teaching about Jesus
the love of almighty God
showing us such kindness
in the blessings of the Lord
Gather other workers
the nets are bursting
the fields ripe, ready
for the reapers, for the harvest
a bounty for the Lord.

Deeper Meaning
Deeper meaning
of the words shared
given as an offering
free to the world
hoping their will plant a seed
to offer hope for those in need
Nothing more than offering love
a witness to God
in my heart and my heart
shared with the world
that others may know
the love of our Savior
with them always

If we hate our brothers
If we hate our brothers, our sisters
just for who they are
can we love our God
with all our hearts
Is our strength weakened
our love watered down
if we judge our neighbors
keeping them on the ground
How are we called
what would Jesus do
if he saw us set apart
not part of one flock
How will we be judged
by the one who climbed the cross
would he recognize himself
in our actions and our walk

Her Laugh infectious
Her laugh infectious
her smile so wide
how I miss that

The sparkle in her mischief
the warmth of her love

Filled with Compassion
Christ loved us anyway
judging us not
filled with compassion
sharing his life with us
Eating with the outcasts
the Samaritans and the others
the women, the lepers
with all who were left out
We are to follow his example
love even for our enemies
offering love and kindness
in our walk on this earth
Loving our neighbors
giving of our lives
offering them our witness
so no more may die

The Voice of Inclusion
With the prostitutes, the tax collectors
with the unclean, the lepers
Christ is the voice of inclusion
showing us his example
loving all whom he met
offering even Judas
his body, his blood
his sacrifice on the cross
All of us sinners
while we yet lived in sin
going to Calvary
showing us how to live

Human Rights
Basic human rights
to love and to live
offered to each
only by the Father to give
We cannot take them
for they are not truly ours
but we can harm them
if we do not show love
We are called to service
to love God and our neighbor
to not judge another
but offer the world hope
Messengers of our Savior
witnesses to his power
able to heal us with his sacrifice
to raise us from the ground
We must not be stumbling blocks
fetters on our neighbors’ feet
we should be fitting them
with wings on which to fly

Human Dignity
So easily thrown away
so easily tossed out
if we bar their way
if we cast our neighbors out
Ours to gather in
to make one flock
to gather in all the lost sheep
till none of them is lost
Not to judge the world
to look into others’ hearts
leaving the judging to God
offering them love instead

Stepping Stones - 2
Maybe patience
perseverance in adversity
staying on the path
stepping stones laid
to make the way easier
over the space of time
trying to be faithful
until that time is now.

like the potter and the clay
May God always keep you in His grip
like the potter and the clay
may we ever be malleable
giving to his touch
offering ourselves
to be transformed in love
molding by his hands
reaching down from above
like the potter and the clay
may we ever be malleable
giving to his touch
offering ourselves
to be transformed in love
molding by his hands
reaching down from above

Marking Another
Marking another
different from us
as if that made them unworthy
unable to approach the cross
All of us human
with feet made of clay
all needing Jesus
at the end of our days
We all are fallen
abiding in sin
needing our Savior
in the end to begin
Only new life through his grace
his sacrifice on the cross
we should love one another
because of that cost

The Stigma of Difference
The stigma of difference
setting us apart
when we are all one
fallen before the Lord
each of us sinners
none better than the rest

Pernicious
Are we complicit
when we stand in silence
pernicious discrimination
devaluing our neighbor
Excluding them from inclusion
blind to the judging
letting others abuse
our sisters and our brothers
We must stand, we must speak
calling all of us to an awakening
looking at where boundaries are established
stumbling blocks to full inclusion
Not being silent before those who separate
who judge our neighbors
standing in the breach
with our brother, our Savior
We are called to this
to speak out against repression
the little insidious slights
and the pernicious patterns of behavior

Attacked for who they are
The most vile abuse
targeted because of their difference
attacked for who they are
just because of their color, their race
their sexual orientation
Judging others, setting boundaries
barriers for inclusion
just who for they are

We do not want to believe
Our worlds in denial
safe from reality
we do not want to believe
the evil stalking our loved ones
the harm out there
even close to home
insidious and pernicious
a cloud without the shadows
needing the love of God
the light of our Savior
piercing the darkness
we need to stand with Jesus
to heal the brokenness
all of us responsible
none should stand in silence
all of us able
to stand in the breach

The Air Heavy
The tractor mowing the hill
the schoolyard alive with green
children filling the elementary swings
though some are eighth graders
The air heavy

And his name is blessing
So simple an act
responding to our Creator
a child unexpected
a son for a nation
Named for a purpose
humble before God
wanting to respond, faithful
giving God our all
And his name is blessing
offered from their heart
heeding God’s calling
going where they are led
serving as messengers
sharing God’s love
like Hannah at the temple
giving unto God
out of their own great love

We think it is so distant
We think it is so distant
the judging of others
racism, bias,
phobias against one another
keeping us separated
away from God’s love
needing to be mindful
to speak when we hear it

What we risk
Turning our back
on the call of Jesus
what we risk
when we do not follow
So much more
than what we fear
when we fail to act
in the name of Jesus
We are here now
in this time and place
to sow seeds of love
to share his face
to be the hands and feet
the voice of Jesus
if we fail to speak
who will share the message
the good news of salvation
our purpose on the earth

Timid When He Calls
My prayer oh Lord
that when my Master calls
that I would respond
to answer your word
That I would not be timid
that I would boldly go
that I would have faith
when my Master calls.

Bound by Our Fears
Timid disciples
captive to the world
failing to speak
to carry God’s holy word
Bound by our fears
setting peoples apart
focused on the differences
not the stirrings of our hearts
Something must change
the Spirit within calling
leading if we would follow
not knowing where to begin
God will call us
if we are open to Him
the Master’s plan for our days
a better tomorrow
if we truly walk in his ways

What do we risk
What do we risk in this life
if we stand in the background
if we speak but do not act
when we are timid in our witness
What do we risk each day
hearing the cries of the needy
yet sitting quietly in our pews
not going into the streets
Justice in these troubled times
will not come if we are silent
safely stored away in comfort
in our warm and safe places
Only if we stand with Christ
risking our persecution
then and only then
do we truly live out our purpose.

Will We Stand Like Jesus
Will our model be the disciples
cowering in the boat
sitting when Christ called them
to come, to walk on water
Will we stand like Jesus
speaking truth to power
will John the Baptist guide us
calling those judging vipers
Will we walk
as Paul did after his conversion
risking all in this life
that others may know Jesus
Will we stand like Peter
going onto the water
led by his faith in Christ
to stand on stormy seas

Persecuted like Christ
What do we fear
that keeps us in our seats
when we should be
persecuted like Jesus
our lives in the streets
Sharing Christ’s message
the world upside down
not judging others
lifting them from the ground
Speaking out in power
guided by Christ
loving our neighbors
led by his love
Going as we are led
speaking out loud
We are not better
than those in the shadows
we should lift them up
in carrying God’s light
The world corrupt
so far from God’s grace
we must bear witness
projecting Christ’s face
Standing up against repression
the judging of others
thinking we are better
when we are bound by our sin
We all need our Savior
if we are to live
no better than our neighbors
because of our stain
the judgment just the same

Mary Before Us
Anyone different
like Mary before us
in the dust at our feet
looking up at Jesus
An indictment, now as then,
if we deign to judge another
all of us lost sheep
estranged from our Master
Christ alone
by his sacrifice given
bridging the gap
caused by our failing
Who are we to judge
when we too are fallen
in the death of our sin
only rising with Jesus

Other Sheep
We are the other sheep
not part of the first flock
brought one through Jesus
through his gift on the cross
How can we judge others
when we have been given life
from the pit of our making
to the heights of God’s light
We must be blinded
by the plank in our eyes
to be judging our neighbors
when we should have died.

By Holy Appointments
Connecting lives together
all one congregation
all believers as one
one flock of one Shepherd
all of us called
to offer love
sharing our Savior
to the ends of the earth
Holy appointments
God’s way of sending ripples
stones thrown in deep waters
washing on distant shores
change coming
resolving differences
in God’s time only
not yours or mine

Welcoming Strangers - 3
Tugging at our hearts
lessons of Jesus
to take up our cross
and to trust in the Lord
Welcoming strangers
as we are called
holy appointments
to love one and all
We don’t know
but we may be welcoming saints
changing our lives
in the gifts that He grants
lessons of Jesus
to take up our cross
and to trust in the Lord
Welcoming strangers
as we are called
holy appointments
to love one and all
We don’t know
but we may be welcoming saints
changing our lives
in the gifts that He grants

If Our Hearts are Open – v2
With what will God bless us
if we were truly open
if our doors were not locked
if our hearts are open
where would God lead us
what would we see
How much farther
would this world be
coming unto Thee

Unlocking Doors
Open hearts, with the keys
unlocking doors
for their liberty
our lives together
in one congregation
under the eye of our Savior
the rod of our Shepherd
keeping us safe from all harm
in one congregation

If Our Doors are Closed
If our doors are closed
our sisters our brothers
other sheep only
set safely apart
if our doors are closed
how can we be open
to the calling of Christ
to serve all people

and just down the street

How can we judge them
How can we judge them

what they are worthy
as worthy as us
Only by our Savior
reconciled at the cross
only by his sacrifice

What We Desire
The world we pray for
the sense of reconciliation
the union of the faithful
only if we make it
Needing to stand up
to act on our faith
what we desire worthy

In Faith
In faith
saying yes
not doubting the Lord
opening a door
when our Savior calls
Heeding his message
to offer his love
poured out from us
all that we can give

opening some doors and planting some seeds
The judgment will come
the Savior to return
just not of our knowing
when it will occur
We are to be open
ready for that time
our lamps lit and burning
revealing the Lord
Maybe false prophets
opening some doors
giving us opportunities
planting some seeds
in hearts that are open
Hoping we will be ready
more souls prepared, fertile
open to our Savior
when we comes again to earth

Authentic Prophets
Each of us called
to stand in the breach
with our Savior
more sinners to reach
To be like John
standing in the wilderness
calling to the vipers
to repent of their sin
Each of us convicted
our death our stain
only be Christ’s grace
is our judgment washed away
Only in accepting
to his kingdom come
only in our witness
will others be made aware
Teach the message
authentic witnesses here
loving our neighbors
as we serve the Lord
Going as we are called
to the ends of the earth
only in Jesus
do we have eternal birth

As We are Loved
Ready for that day
living in grace
offering love to our neighbors
showing Christ’s face
As we are loved
by our sovereign God
so we should share
with our neighbors as ourselves
Offering them witness
the power of God’s love
to heal our brokenness
to raise us up above
As we are loved
so should we love
sharing Christ’s message
the Spirit like a dove
Landing upon us
giving us power
going into the world
starting this very hour
To share Christ richly
the blessings, living water
creating a harvest
more sheep for the garner

Ready for that Day
Ready for that day
whenever it may come
faithful to the Lord
living in grace
Humble with our neighbors
gentle in our walk
healing in our witness
love in our talk

Go Before the Lord
Maybe we are to listen
to heed our Master’s call
Like John before us
going before the Lord
To tell the nations
making disciples in His name
healing with our example
going as we can
God’s way simple
living in love
carrying for our neighbors
as we serve God above

Preparing the Way - 3
Speaking out clearly
opening their eyes
preparing the way
the way for the Lord
Speaking out with power
letting the Spirit within
guide our every statement
every word we speak
Set apart for a purpose
raised as a nation
each one called to be a blessing
a neighbor to one another
Calling to the wilderness
to stand in the deep waters
to speak out for justice
and to raise up our brothers
our sisters who are hurting
proclaiming our Savior
until he returns

Into the Verdant Wood
The green calling
drawing us in
into the verdant wood
while staying on the road
The forest wrapped around us
heading north on the road
drawing us ever onward
for treasure yet untold
The lush spring forest
before the green hides all the secrets
revealed for an instant
wrapped in green below

Grasses, Ferns and the Tree Tops
All of this changing
like a cascade of color
all variations of greens
from the brightest to the warmest
alive in this morning
shining through the fog
the mist of the morning
giving up the secrets
the forest alive and vibrant
from grasses, ferns,
up to the tree tops
the tableau of the morning
all alive with wonder

like a cascade of color
all variations of greens
from the brightest to the warmest
alive in this morning
shining through the fog
the mist of the morning
giving up the secrets
the forest alive and vibrant
from grasses, ferns,
up to the tree tops
the tableau of the morning
all alive with wonder

The wet spring forest
April/May woods
after days of raining
water rising with the opening
the ferns, the grasses, the leaves
even the moss alive for the seeing
the hand of the maker revealed

The Heads Opening
The necks of the ferns
the fiddleheads opening
like the wings of butterflies
the blood making them rigid
the ferns unfurling
like massive sails of the undergrowth
warming even without sunlight
filtered in the mist of the morning
green an endless sight

Within the Mist
Not fog exactly
not full rain either
even when stopping
the wiper blades silent
Driving, moving
within the mist
the bubble of the low clouds
the green of the forest reaching

Chartreuse Greening
Spring quickly growing
alive in the water
the weeks of rain infusing
all the land with color
the softness of the new leaves
the buds unfurling
chartreuse greening
into deeper hues
the spectrum expanding
the forest still alive, open
sharing hidden treasure

This hour has come
This hour has come
the die has been cast
all to be fulfilled
the moment at last
“Rise! Let us go!
Here comes my betrayer!”
spoke the master
the shepherd captured
the sheep run away

Rise! Let Us Go!
In the words of the master
after his prayer in the garden
his submission to God’s purpose
ready for the confrontation
all that had been foretold
marching forward
a light in that darkness
ready for the passion
to formally begin.
“Rise! Let us go!
Here comes my betrayer!”
The hour has come.

The taste still ripe
The cup just passed
the taste still ripe
sitting on their tongues
as Christ started to speak
The wine, after the bread,
what were these words,
the master’s body
and now the words
the cup his blood
A covenant to replace
on the Passover night
a new lamb soon to be slaughtered
to stand in the breach
protecting us once more
God’s wrath to pass over
to fall upon the sacrifice
our sins upon his head
going to the cross instead

Sermon, "Priceless" by Pastor Ruth L. Foss, Suncook United Methodist Church, Suncook, NH 5/22/2011
Pastor Ruth Foss
Sunday May 22, 2011
Fifth Sunday after Easter
Psalm 33:1-4 ESV Bible
Acts 7:55-60 Gods Word Bible
1 Peter 2:2-10 Common English Bible
. . . Priceless
The Lord be with you. . .
And also with you. . .
Let us pray. . .
Loving, Compassionate, God, We thank you for your word that you have given us to help us on our journey of life. We pray that you would open your ancient words to us this day. Give us a better understanding of how you would have us live our lives. We pray for your Spirit to move among us as we hear the word you have for us this day. Speak to us in ways that we never imagined. May we have ears to hear, eyes to see and an open heart to you and your will for our lives. Speak Lord. . . your children are listening. . .
Have you ever noticed in life that some things that seem that they are worthless are really worth a lot? I love watching those shows that people bring things that they think are worthless to the show and there are appraisers there and they find out what they have is actually worth a lot. That even happens sometimes in relationships. We are put in the lives of some people and we may think to ourselves that the relationship is worthless; it has no real value to us, just to find out that the worthless relationship has become a relationship that we rely on and is priceless to us. There are other times when we do things, out of the sheer joy of doing them just to find out that what we did was priceless to that other person.
Even in nature we come across things that we think is worthless and find beauty and symmetry in it. We may see a tree stump and think it is dead but when we take a closer look we find small shoots that are coming up out of it. . . new life out of something that we thought was dead. Take this rock for instance. . . (Show rock). . . some might think of it as just a rock. . . it nothing but dead matter. . . but it is so much more than that. Even in the Gospels we hear about persons and things that seem dead but are alive. 1 Peter 1:2-10 talks about a rock in a whole new way. It reads and I’m reading from the Common English Bible. . .
A living stone. . . Christ as a living stone. Now this metaphor that Peter uses seemed strange to me when I first read it years ago. Rocks are rocks and they can’t be alive. . . it’s an inanimate object. . . Well. . . I was so wrong.
Science tells us that a rock is really microcosm of whirling subatomic particles. What Peter may have been saying is that when the stones become living when they are shaped and formed into an edifice, where living takes place. Christ is the corner stone. . . the foundation. . . the living stone upon which the church is made alive. He is the platform. . . the edifice. . . from which our lives take shape and form. . . are constructed. We have a strong, permanent rock that shall never be moved. It is priceless! Christ as our corner stone knits us together as one. Even though Christ was rejected, through His resurrection He was made that corner stone for you and for me.
As we live out our faith in our lives, we never know what will happen when we “pay the price” of being a disciple of Christ, as we live out the Gospel of Grace in our lives even though the world around us is different, even as we suffer humiliation and ridicule from others...and some even to the point of death. The price we may pay may be high but it is a priceless object we get as an end result. We receive our salvation. . . our pardon. . . our adoption in the family of God, princes and princesses of the King of kings. . . our hope for the future and so much more.
In the Acts scripture this morning. . . a man named Saul held the accusers coats as they stoned Stephen. This man is the same man that became Paul after his encounter with the Risen Lord, Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus. This is one of the same people that Stephen asked God to forgive. Was part of Saul’s conversion because of what he heard Stephen do at the end of his life as he asked for that forgiveness? Hmmm. . . As we live out our faith, we may never know how it will affect someone else. We may never know how priceless our actions may be for someone else.
Beloved sons and daughter of the Most High God, this stone can be a stumbling block for us or a precious stone. It all depends on our attitude. Is it not worth it or is it priceless? Is it a stumbling stone of offense or is more precious than silver? Only you and I can decide that. But as you contemplate on this question I want you to remember. . . God thought that we were so priceless that He sent His Son so that we might receive redemption. Christ went to the cross because He too believed that the redemption of humanity was worth the cost. Jesus stretched out His arms on the cross and said “You are worth this much to me. . . ” Which way will you chose?
(The price of a new car. . . about $16,000.00. The price of a hamburger. . . about $2.00. The cost of our salvation. . . 1 human life. Who we are in Christ Jesus. . . priceless. . . )
Amen?!

Who we are in Christ Jesus. . . priceless. . . )
Amen?!

A Precious Stone
Rejected and killing
laid in a borrowed tomb
a precious stone
faithful to God
redeemed, raised up
set to lead
to go before us
to prepare a place for us
a precious stone,
the foundation
on this we raise up
we prepare
we work in this life
to change the whole world

Stones of the Temple
Joining with Christ
the cornerstone
adding to the foundation
raising the church up
Stones of the temple
each one of us shall be
if we follow our Savior
sharing eternity
Lifting up our neighbors
lifting them up
offering love, God’s grace
filling their cup
God’s work continuing
each stone being added
an edifice of salvation

Our Path to God
Each person different
coming to the Lord
our path to God
unique, a journey
of our mind, our spirit
speaking to our hearts
guiding our hands and feet
leading us onward

serving our neighbor
love informing
sharing with others
the love of our Savior

The Image of Journey
The image of journey
to understand our faith
the living it out
seeing God’s face
Walking with him
confessing our sin
turning from the world
picking up our cross
Going as we are led
hearing our Savior’s voice
turning our lives to him
because of his choice
Dying that we may live
healing our stain
faithful to the Master
suffering such pain
