Painting eternity, icons, our national pastime,
capturing our heroes, a moment of grace;
Longing for perfection, seeking to get it right,
striving to be faithful, to the image, to that age.

Seeing the nobility, the gravitas, the moment,
of the images in the emulsion, capturing their faces;
Longing for the power in the lighting, the shades of color,
painting our diamond heroes, so many we have lost.

Painting in shades of light...
not merely in hue, in color,
trying to capture reality
the warmth of mid-summer.

Painting in shades of light...
a daunting proposition,
seeking to capture the image
the truth before our eyes.

Painting in shades of light...
to gather features, meaning,
to honor the work of others
who capture light in a bottle.

Rising toward the heavens

Rising toward the heavens
from orange, to yellow, to white,
our star in its awakening
bringing sunshine and light.
 
Awakening as a promise
proof of the sovereignty of God
alive in the dawning
the provision of our risen Lord.

I do not hold the words too tightly

I do not hold the words too tightly,
the bits of gossamer, of whimsy,
captured from the ether, the air,
held in the fowler's net, banded,
released just as quickly...
 
I do not hold the words too tightly
because they are not truly mine;
I am the vessel, the amanuensis,
to gather the words from the ether
to give breath eternal life...
