at the edge of the field
the brink of the wood
grass yields to rougher plants
plants of the brush, of the bramble
before those alive in the wood
goldenrod, blackberry,
woody, tough, hardy members
living at the edge, the boundary
the dividing line
between grass and tree

An Air of Confidence
She was next to me
speaking with
an air of confidence
certainty beyond her years
sudden surety
of what she wanted, needed
speaking clearly
when it mattered
before power
with confidence

A Rainbow of Hope
An urgent call
a race down the dark stairs
a flicker of color as I ran outside
an arc, His bow, His promise
shown down on us
standing in awe and wonder
the rich color muted in the city
It curves over the alley
above the tenements, the wires
the clutter, the stresses of life
a timely reminder
in good times and bad
of your faithfulness,
your covenant with your people
a beautiful arc, a shimmering bow
a pleasure to behold
a piece of hope placed
for a moment, a few seconds
unnoticed by so many,
lost in the push and pull
of daily living
shared with those lucky few
who stopped for a moment or two
and looked up

A Path to Pray
Lord guide my feet
help me to walk my prayer to you
to follow the path that you have laid out for me
my journey just begun, a little later than some
guide me in your paths, in your ways
lead me to the center, to the truth,
your truth for my life
walk with me, shelter me
nurture the bud growing into flower
water me, plant me
deeply in your good soil
like the pearl of great value
the treasure planted in the ground
seek me Lord, join my spirit
with yours, my advocate
carry me Father when I fall
stride beside me Brother
let me share your yoke
pray with me, as I walk
your prayer paths

Head Bowed
She sits, still, quiet
head bowed
and hands clasped
in morning prayer
starting her days
before the din and motion
when the three awake
she sits humbly
reverently
you can see it
truly you can
a practiced solemn
a peaceful centering
drawing strength
into her
bringing you into her spirit
quieting herself
to start each day
with God

He Reigns
Coming down the stairs
from my office
I heard familiar words
or a familiar melody
at least
Four and six, they sang
and danced
to most of the words
He Reigns
Holy, Holy
He Reigns
oblivious to the cartoons
playing in the background
my movements in the house
the clutter of toys on the floor
they were in their own world
celebrating as children can
the wonder of God’s love
in the words of the song
He Reigns

Simple Beauty
Starflower
little flower
elegant in your simplicity
delicate stamens
bright yellow anthers
star of the northwind
growing through the leaf litter
with the mayflowers,
lady slippers, the vole
the chipmunk, the fallen trees
the wild creatures of the wood
simple beauty of the forest
look down, pause,
and wonder

Luna Moth
She was there
in the morning
holding fast
to the porch screen
bewitched by the indoor bulb
in the outside light,
left on overnight
A true creature of the night
green, golden,
soft, velvety
gracing my day
because the light
lured her
from the night

Mother of Pearl
An ancient shell
on their shelf
a memento, a reminder of the sea
of the coast
glistening under the film of dust
of the passing years
a clouded rainbow
shimmering color in the surface,
in the depth of the shell,
its skin, its sinew
reflecting, refracting
living color
urging young hands to touch
young eyes to marvel
at its iridescent beauty
saved and treasured
on their shelf

Don't Move the Bales
Archery is meant
for fields, for forest
for targets, for skill
which we lacked
and we had loose bales
easily pierced, split
by errant arrows
misguided missiles
missing their mark
Don’t move them,
please don’t
for the garage
is aerated

Cicada Shell
Down by the dirt
at the base of the white pine
clutched close,
holding the gnarled,
wrinkled elephant skin
a cicada chrysalis
an empty shell
still clinging to the tree
after the birthing
clear, amber, ripped open
by the living adult
high up in the canopy now
to live out its short life
up in the sun

The Crawlspace
We were told there were
monsters in there
that the floor was missing
we would fall
we would fall into the furnace
it was scary in the crawlspace
under the eaves
behind our beds
apocryphal tales
to curb curiosity
rules to be broken

Grounded in the Water - revised
All of life's problems bleed away
When I get grounded in the water.
Grounded in the love of God
the never-ending wellspring of life
poured out for all who would drink
draw in the energy, the love, the grace
of God’s gifts, freely given
like the woman at the well
we ask for the cup to be filled
for our thirst to be quenched,
without having to walk to the well
thirsty and tired, hot and tired
wanting, needing that water
grounding our faith
strengthening our spirits
to do his work

When I get grounded in the water.
Grounded in the love of God
the never-ending wellspring of life
poured out for all who would drink
draw in the energy, the love, the grace
of God’s gifts, freely given
like the woman at the well
we ask for the cup to be filled
for our thirst to be quenched,
without having to walk to the well
thirsty and tired, hot and tired
wanting, needing that water
grounding our faith
strengthening our spirits
to do his work

Hearing Their Voice
A barbershop group
far more than a quartet
sang with one voice
filling the sanctuary
and the hearts of all of us
held by the one verse
Precious Lord
lead him home
he is worthy
he is tired
lead him home

Your Name
The name you chose
Your name
Informal, friendly, official
An act of will, of self
Defining for yourself
Who you are
Out from under
The rigid yoke
The mantel
Forced upon you
Defining you not as you
Desire. Her vision
Collided with the you
That is You.

Alabaster Air
I can remember a night
a hushed quiet night
when I sat and melted
in the alabaster air
bleed from me the cares of the day
wash me of my stress
feel the stillness in the dusk
wrap in the cooling
draw the night to my breast
hear my subtle breath
slowing in my chest

Marelli's Fruit and Real Estate
That is what the bright neon sign read
this bit of fun, this whimsy
this place Leno would love
to lampoon
poke fun
A shop, a store, with a little of this
and that selling fruit
its true
and other things too
Mickey’s Big Mouth
on the bottom rack
almost out of view
beyond the Night Train
the Red White and Blue
the Mock Turtle soup
a funny place to find this or that
behind the counter, the glass,
the old dark store
I never asked
about the real estate

Prime the Pump
Prime the pump
oh prime the pump
it will be there
so prime the pump
the well is deep
and flows forever
we need only trust
believe in the water
the living water
the living water
of God

Graves of New Orleans
There is something rare
something grand
something right
about the graves of New Orleans
not hidden flat stones
carved names
in the dirt and grass
nor plain letters and dates
of so many graveyards
these are cathedrals
homes for the dead
worthy vessels
for our forebears
festooned with mirth and
reverence, with Spanish moss
and southern charm
tenements and flats
stay awhile

Depart to Serve
We are a timid flock
a safe and secure
and aging flock
rise up, rise up
get on your feet
we have work to do
be bold in spirit
ready to heed
the rest of the call
to go to church
to breath in and
depart to serve

An Audible Gasp
Pain spoke
an audible gasp
in the congregation
at the sudden news
of your recent passing
a body giving in to pain
to the slow pull of cancer
eating and growing
lingering hurt, deep ache
in our body, in us
for her loss, our loss
in our shared mortality
in your faithfulness
your voice in the choir
our loss, yes our loss
shudder in an audible gasp

Belgrade Nights
a cup of dark thick amber
slides down my throat
rich walnut brandy
home made cure
sure to give a smile
to wry lips
a laugh
walk through familiar streets
old city, city of night
dark past, sudden color
sound, light
of the discothèque
movement of the senses
to a different beat
moving through us
under the repartee
the easy musings
reconnected in the dim
smoke rich night
the Sava draws us to her bank
stroll by her shore
in and out of shadows
coffee, thick night
hidden wonders
of your home,
your center
Beograd, oh Beograd
find me a way home

My Friend, the Mujahideen
Man of mystery
of time and space
where oh where have you hid your face
Are you in the dark or in the light
can you ever be free to fly a kite
many faces have you got
sometimes you must sleep on a cot
secret life you seem to have
another place another time
can you spare a dime
a cup of elixir, a smoke or two
a time to share some homebrew
a faded scar upon your soul
hurry you have to go
another month another year
be safe out in the world
share a smile and give a cheer
and biti dobro raspoložen

The Plant Grows
A little water, a little soil
a little faith, a little toil
a sense of wonder
a heart of love
descending on us all
just like a dove
a love so big
it saved us all
a gift so great
it left us weak
a well so deep
it gave us drink
a hope so sure
made us think
a love divine
a love so sure
a love that
will ever endure
a growing seed
within our chest
a life to live
until we rest
a telling truth
within this prayer
of the gift we
all must share

Saints and Strangers
Saints and Strangers
share the space under my skin
in my blood, my history
Pilgrims and adventurers
who stayed in the land
never went west young men
but found New England,
Massachusetts
home; in Plymouth to Westfield
twelve generations of us
finally to my home
in New Hampshire
their blood still in my veins
in me, at home
in New England

Ssh, Pastor Peter is Praying
Her four-year old body figgeted,
struggled to sit still in the pew
to quiet her spirit
where the sermon was long
the hour was late
she was tired, antsy
“Ssh, Pastor Peter is praying”
I whispered, covering her mouth
drawing her toward me
I was right, he was praying;
but not with head bowed
nor were we in the congregation
No he was praying the story
of Christ’s table
of the first breaking of bread
that fateful Passover meal
when a body was broken
offered in sacrifice
spilt blood and rent body
a familiar story
with deeper meaning
purer truth
in his hushed,
penitent tone,
His understanding of the magnitude
the importance of the gift.

Pretermitted Heir
natural bounty of her affection
archaic words, too formal
for the modern age
They were her children
those she loves,
guides, cares for
unending, unceasing
she would never forget them

Conflicts
Understanding the arguments
on either side of the fight
parents as parties, in the heart,
the merits of the case
able to take the shoes, the place
of their own, their own blood, their child
fight for their rights
champion the cause
as their own

A village where time forgot
to reset the clock
Where homes are clad in grey
hiding a joy in starting the day
a place of sky and sun
sand and beach to have some fun
a fishing town, a fishing fleet
at the end of its main street
the Atlantic, stormy sea
calling you, calling me

Meeting History
Expectantly, asking where she was
She was eight, at that point, in that year
my long-dead ancestor
alive again in this child
running in the yard
with the other players
on this tiny stage set
Reflecting history
that was, in our past
a slice of time, our common struggle
to form this place
free to worship
as conscience dictates
July 23, 2006 16:40
On seeing the actor playing Deborah Hopkins, at Plimoth Plantation, Plymouth, MA; she was my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandmother.

All the Saints
All the saints
and all the angels
couldn’t be more near and precious
hoping hearts and pleading faces
need you now more than in past ages
feeling love in the darkest places
means so much to hear you in the spaces
hold us Lord Creator
answer our humble petitions
help us dear sweet redeemer
save us from our afflictions

Housefly
Housefly housefly
little mouse of a house fly
sitting on the Queen’s Anne’s Lace
looking no more out of place
than in a field, in a field
on the branch or in a field
sorry for the fuss I made
when you sojourned in my glade
down the street in the park
what a life of mirth and lark
oh housefly housefly
come again to spend a while
to see your world from your point of view
and see the colors in so many hues
oh housefly oh housefly
we’ll see you again by and by

Dyke Bridge
I had to go there, to see it for myself, to go there
to test the theory of an accident, a mistake
minutes, hours that changed history
while our eyes were another Sea
miles and miles away
from the slip of land,
width of a bridge
dark channel
sunken car
death
Yes,
It is a place
not easy to reach
a turn against the course
of the road, the fall-line of the hill
A mistake to hard to fathom, to believe
haunting the hopes of a family, a dynasty
the fallen son, the martyred one, and the broken one

Arguing the Essential Nature
Now this was a conversation,
as I learned later,
that was not in the right place
a high school classroom, after the end of the day
was not the right venue, the right ambiance
the right place at all
We needed to be in a dark, clove smoke-filled room
sipping espresso and wearing berets
speaking of Dylan, Luther, Descartes
Nietzsche, of Walden, of excess
of the Grapes of Wrath
and Lord of the Flies
Living the grunge beat life
to get to the truth, the heart of our jive
Arguing the essential nature of man
is he a carnal beast or controlled by
better angels, teacher and oh so certain
high school Junior
fighting, with facts, reason, bluster
for causes without consequence
to better a grade in a team-taught course
no effect on anything
but debating skills
