A Shimmering Line

The light of the moon
a shimmering line across the skin of the lake
rising and falling, undulating toward the horizon
the rays of the full moon perpendicular to my path
cutting silently, or nearly so, through the water
a whisper of the hull only
the lapping of the waves on my left
tracing the edge of the lake
shrouded in darkening night
dance of the striders, the water beetles
giddy on the surface
all in sepia tints, tones,
or so the scene remains in my memory

A Piece of Amethyst

in the dirt, the lawn, just barely visible
a bit of smooth color, catching the light
the wet earth, after the mower cleared more away
a piece of amethyst, the stem of a goblet perhaps
pulled from the ground, no longer hidden
soft living color, muted purple lilac
cool in my hand, heavy crystal in my pocket
carried with me for the afternoon
saved for further contemplation
on the meaning of the finding
amethyst, under the living pine

Foggy day on the ocean

A foggy day on the ocean,
my feet in the warm surf,
feeling the water lapping,
the movement of the tide
the shifting of the liquid sand
under my smoothed soles

Gazing into the distance,
the unseen horizon line
struggling to make out the lobster boats
the bobbing buoys on the too calm waves
the sprinkling of the drizzle on the crests

The swells before me, as I walk gingerly
out onto the jetty,
the cup of still hot black coffee
warming my hands

Watching my steps, barefoot
farther out onto the slippery rocks
the sharp edges of the barnacles inches away
just beneath the high tide line below

The call of the gulls, the sounding of the fog horn
awakening in the morning stillness
the beam of the lighthouse, just beyond view
the raw-cool air, even in full summer
rushing back to me in my memories

Steamers for lunch

The words of the screen
“steamers for lunch, foggy day on the ocean”
so much cascading memory
flooding over me, seeing the image
of the water, the smell of the pot,
the taste of the clams, the lemon,
the melting butter, dripping in my beard
the taste of the drink, cold, washing them down
the slowing of my heart rate, the pace of my life
in the memory of these moments
savoring the simple pleasures
the little gifts of grace
given by the creator
all around us, to enjoy

Teach Them

No degree, no special schooling did they have
an apprenticeship, of sorts, perhaps
sitting at the master’s feet
watching him, learning from his life

A charge to keep, to the ends of the earth
to make disciples, to teach them,
to bear witness and to set an example
to mentor and to guide

Simple words, living in our faith
as He told the first disciples,
as they lived and as we have been taught
to share these lessons
to all nations, teaching them
the commandments of the Lord
the way to life eternal

His Last Lecture

The commissioning, few words
His last lecture on earth
claiming His authority
Imparting us with power
a mission to the world

Words that have grown the church
from one believer to the heart of another
empowering us to witness, to teach
to guide and to mentor others
into a closer walk with thee

Joining the Circle of Your Love

Not joining our church, our congregation;
joining the circle of Your love
so were the words of welcome
new members entering in
becoming part of the body of Christ
into His circle of love, sharing with us
His work, His ministry carried on
as He was sent, so we go, in His name
sharing His love, as we are able, to all nations
