as a rose brush trimmed

Time to prune the branches

the old to be trimmed
some branches all together
cut, cast away,
thrown into the fire

time to prune the branches
to cut the dead out
that which saps our strength
so that the rest may grow

In the sand before Mary

Christ writing in the sand
before the feet of Mary
the leaders, the people
prepared to pass judgment
ready to judge her
to stone her to death

Jesus writing in the sand
was it God’s judgment
for all that they had done
in the book of life
not to cast their stones
unless they were righteous

the stones falling to the ground
soon alone with Mary.

accused of blasphemy, betrayal

No matter who I will vote for
the election this year
I know freedom isn’t free
someone paid the price
Jesus died for me

Jesus is my candidate

to leave the heavenly realm
he chose to walk the earth
only through the gate of Christ
do we have new birth

This would have been a bow

The branch on the ground
in front of the church
a live branch, willing
not filled with rot
left there, forgotten
oh what have I got

Just the right length
the right strength
as I gathered it up
and it fell into my hands
my shoulder feeling its weight
thinking back, to my youth

Of hand-made bows
of twine pulled tight
of the summer camp
and days by the lake
A pristine fall day
under the maple
the azure vista

not sure which it would have been
the branch on the ground

a live branch
not filled with rot

It was the right length

The ocean, the waters
grace all around
in the waters, healing
redeemed into life

Grace, a cloud
surrounding us
there ready
when we call to God

Healing Inhibitions

When we wall some off
closed to promise
hurting, struggling in pain
no hope for tomorrow
Open instead
healing inhibitions
the walls melting away
walking through the gate
into a new tomorrow
peace on the other side

Our Savior, in the telling
in the story of this man
injured, left for dead
there in the road

Christ praises the Samaritan
the enemy of the Jews
for he stopped to care for him
the man there in the road

He wasn’t stopped by convention
the enmity of that time
he cared for his neighbor in need
he didn’t cross to the other side

no matter how full the stadium
no matter how we paint our face
the food at the tailgate
the seat that we buy

no matter the score
the shouts in the street
football is not a religion
it is not the source of our belief

An obsession, a focus
a center of our lives
yes, like TV,
it may be all of that
NASCAR is not a religion
more of a joy, a cult
exalting race cars, their drivers
Sprinting for the Cup.

Dale is not God
Junior is not Christ
Jeff and Tony aren’t archangels
the rest the heavenly choir
NASCAR is not a religion
a passion, perhaps
God is not a pit boss
he don’t make you do laps

the Good News of God

his light shining through
Hope in the walk
