It's not rocket science

It's not rocket science,
It's only retail
a phrase I've heard bantered
across the counter at work.
 
It's not rocket science, it's retail
a throw-away line, maybe,
like saying we would rather be smart
than intelligent any day.
 
But I have known rocket scientists
I have read the abstracts
their grants, their research
so over my head, so opaque.
 
I have seen their passion
their love of physics, of astronomy,
infinite space, minute particles
I have seen it on their face
 
But oh the proxy, the fill-in,
the professor standing before us
trying to explain a principle, a theory,
to our general education classroom.
 
He might have just as well have been speaking Greek.
