We hear the cries

I want, I want, I need;

but they ring hollow.

We fall to our knees

There is a void, a vacuum,

the emptiness of comparison

keeping up with the Joneses

when they are bound for destruction

Barrels on the curb

the things we accumulated

boxed up and carried

gathering dust

in the back of the garage

after seasons, months,

maybe longer still

added to the barrels on the curb

sent to the dump

these things are so empty

merely passing fancies

flotsam and jetsam of this life

when we only need Christ.
