an honest question

going back to village
to the people
telling them what he said
asking an honest question
not saying, “he claims to be”,
moving to the next steps
saying, “could he be”,
might this man be
the Messiah, the Christ

not challenge within her question
listening closely to her words
not questioning the truth
wanting to believe
could he be the Christ
her words to the people
after speaking with Jesus,
“Do you think he might be the Christ”
the Messiah right here with us?

the Messiah, the Christ

the Messiah, the Christ
at the well with her
the woman on the outside
not part of the group
she came to the well
in the heat of the day
not with the other women
no how, no way
such was the audience
for the Christ, revealing,
stating his presence clearly,
I am he, the one speaking to you
the Messiah, the Christ.
the one they waited for,
all of their lives.

I, the one speaking to you

“I, the one speaking to you”,
not some vague reference
the Messiah with you present
so clear a statement
not an oblique message
a parable, a metaphor
an analogy only
his statements to her

this unexpected audience
this woman at the well
speaking to her, so directly,
a Samaritan at that.
Jesus, in no ambiguity,
speaking his authority,
“I am he, the Messiah,
the Christ. I, the one
speaking to you,”
the hope of all mankind.

seeking pie, finding water

physical hunger
our bodies thirsty
but deeper yet
within our souls

seeking pie
food for her body
finding water
to quench her thirst

deep within
spiritual hunger
thirst for Christ;
God provides.
