They did not believe

They would not talk with me,
I couldn’t be hired,
They did not believe I could
Cross the Rubicon,
To see them with white hats.
 
But they did not ask me,
Who I was, truly,
They did not look at my resume,
To see that I was a company man,
Open to their argument…

I was never interviewed by any law firm
that represents school districts
when I was doing my job search,
because I had worked as a clerk
with Stein, Volinsky, and Callaghan,
while in law school…
I had been a school board member and chair
before law school…

No, I'm not done

I am not finished

I have not to do

Not nearly done,

not yet, not today

The exam has not come

The fat lady has not sung

The battle not yet won

The race not yet done

Studying still

Until, unless

Time is called

and I must go

To the room,

Make the best of it

For the Fat Lady

And await

Study – v2

We study, we argue, we think

Lawyers sharing common bonds with Artists

How novel, how strange;

These seven boxes of time and space

Meted out by name, by code, and key

Four hours at a time

to help us focus, quiet,

fine tune, persuade, and grow

Sanctuary from the outside world

in the lower level, cut off from light,

and noise, save for our peers

Struggling they too,

as I am, to learn the law

A new language, a vocabulary, wisdom

around ancient principles and traditions;

Secrets found within

the four walls of the law
