I am better than I deserve – v3

Too often we don’t really mean it,
it is an off-hand question, casually offered,
not really seeking an answer from another,
our greeting to each other, how we interact,
asking, obliquely, “How are you today?”
 
But, oh, truly, these are the moments,
when Christ calls us to witness, to stop,
to share our truth, our faith, our story,
as we sojourn, as we walk in this life…
 
When I am mindful, when I slow down,
sometimes I will answer, cautiously,
if I feel they might be receptive, open,
“I am better than I deserve”,
when I remember this fact…
 
I deserve damnation, but I receive salvation,
through the blood of Jesus Christ!
 
I deserve death, the cross, my sin convicts me,
but for the blood of Jesus, the Lamb, our sacrifice,
He bore my debt, my stain, the judgement,  
He paid the price I couldn’t pay, freely;
I am saved by grace, only in Jesus’ name.
