They are working in God’s vineyard

Bringing Word, His Word

the Good News, the Gospel

to the masses, the sheep of their flock

like water in the desert

week on week, repeating

synthesized meaning in small bites

The ancient text, the Bible;

Knitted with their history

and ours too we know

so we can comprehend, learn,

to understand the deeper meanings

lessons even still, for our lives

in the ancient text

I met her in Your Word

studying our faith,

the common history

we have shared, stories

ancient truth, wisdom

Children of Abraham

heirs with Christ

reconciling us to God

through His sacrifice

Spending time learning together

exploring the scriptures

these ancient words

and their lessons for our lives

Growing closer to each other

and closer to You

Little could I imagine,

way beyond my comprehension,

how my life would change

A new door opening, completely,

at that beginning of the time set apart

to study your holy Word

How You would bring her into my life

her daughters too, with her

Bringing me joy beyond belief

a faith to heal my soul

Day by day and week by week

entering into the Word

Week by week and year by year

sharing your love

in rhythm and in words

Errant Planet – v3

We are perched, walking on the edge

of an errant planet,

off-kilter and dizzy

spinning like a top

wobbling off course

in its orbit, distracted,

straying from the straight and narrow

the true path, as God intended,

following baser needs

and primal urges

shielding eyes from the glare

the stark light exposing

of the echo, the memory

the Word made flesh

the last truth

denied then too,

put to death

Disciplined study

And worship
Immersed in the Word
Week upon Week

Words and meaning
Beautiful in the learning
and the language

of hope, of life

Growing together
Closer to God,
And His plan,
For each of us

To serve and work
To make more Disciples

To live out the Great Commission

while here on earth

children of Abraham

an invitation to join
With God’s covenant
Beating now,
Under the words
Written on each of our hearts
To follow only Him
And to love one another
As we love ourselves

A challenge to us

as we went to the pulpit

each of us coming forward

I Will.

Not the fleeting, fashionable
cute and cuddly – I Do.
No, this isn’t the thing we’re talking about

I Will.

I Will.
Power of God, commitment continuing
Covenant people responding in-kind.

to the call of God

The God of Creation offered Himself
in sacrifice and in Communion
A perpetual relationship,
Loving, nurturing

All we have to do
Is answer His –
I Will –
with our own –
I will.

It is an invitation of grace
first held out for Abraham
now open to all nations
through Jesus Christ,
our Lord and Savior

I will;
Will you?

I Will be a Disciple – v2

A few, clear voices,

when asked if they want to be

flames or disciples

some voices hesitant,

some of them clear

but one stood out

different somehow

“I will be a disciple!”,

one of them said.

Somehow different

than I want to be a flame

something to marvel,

to wonder at, even this young

“I will”, not I want

a disciple, doubting,

timid, afraid,

being Peter, being Thomas,

being blessed, changed

by the touch of the Holy Spirit

as if by tongues of fire

burning within us

never in your word

when I was a pre-teen

just back from Minnesota

from Lake Minnetonka

I sat at my great-grandfather’s desk

in the dormer, in my room

with a spiral notebook open

I sat there reading the NRSV

wanting to hear your voice

not liking the Good News

trying to translate the bible

into a more modern verse

the notebook long lost

a task not really begun,

much less completed

that was the last time

I sought out your voice, truly

I left your word behind me

as the way got hard

I didn’t seek your guidance

I became caught by the world

not until thirty years later

did I open your word

suddenly, reading, discussing,

a newly-minted attorney

for the first time in my life,

ever, really, more

than thirty years later

more than You would have wanted

while I had been out in the world

entering the Word

picking up the bible

the words of life

changing my path
