prevailing – v2

wrestling with God
with an angel
prevailing, in that he was alive;

changing his name
forevermore Israel
seeing God in that desert

marked for his life
a father of the nations
of the descendant to this day

the tribes of the people
the children of Israel
the name that he claimed

earning a new name – v3

Prevailing in the desert
wrestling with an angel
anointed for a purpose;
Marked by the touch of God
earning a new name.
No longer Jacob
forevermore Israel,
a name of renown
for his victory over the angel;
Prevailing in the struggle
forever changed that day.

holding onto God - 2

holding onto God
for dear life
to receive a blessing
to save his life
struggling for purchase
to not be destroyed
holding onto God
for a sense of peace
striving to stay alive
to gain a victory
the push and pull
not quiet in his spirit
wrestling with God
all through that night
starting his life over
a new name his reward.

wresting with God, with myself – v2

the story so familiar
the aches the same
wrestling, in the night
with God, with myself
in my mind, in my actions
wrestling for control
to be the one in power
not letting go, release,
hanging on for dear life
my hip to remind me
of my struggles that night.

struggling with the divine

struggling with the divine
with the Spirit of God within me
the spark of the Creator
seeking to guide my life
wrestling with God
in the darkness, the desert
in times of wilderness
in illness, in trials
holding eternity
wanting God’s blessing
holding on for dear life
cleaving to our God.

His Blessing a Blessing

Struggling, wrestling with God
this flawed patriarch, Jacob,
stealing a birthright, usurper
Holding on for a blessing,
a blessing from God,
at morning light
From that blessing,
a new name, Israel
From this blessing,
a blessing for a whole nation
in him the covenant revealed
through him the nation born

Holding on for a Blessing

Before they released, parted
holding on for a blessing
Somehow he knew;
He was wrestling with God
this younger twin,
ankle grabbing, usurping,
he strove with God
all through the night
At morning, holding on for a blessing
a blessing from God

Jacob, I Understand

A fall on the ice, two plus year ago
a concave spot, in my left hip,
where it once was convex,
a reminder of that fateful fall
at the back of the parking lot
lost my balance, my way to the door
fumbling with keys, papers,
the clutter of life, changing our focus

So, I understand Jacob, the pain in the hip
the constancy of the discomfort,
changing you, your path in life,
your name, for you struggled,
wrestled with God,
out there in the desert place
knocked you off your own path
turning once more toward the creator
reborn Israel, with the sore left hip
moving on in life,
with a reminder, like me
of a fateful struggle
the impact of reality
on our sore bones
