She stood before the camera

Regaining her composure an effort,

but not shrinking from the camera,

The chronicler, the voyeur,

Silent but soon to speak,

a flaring of her nostrils,

quick motion clearing,

tears that would not be silenced,

resolve in the face of this woman,

like so many clients I have known…

 

We need to honor her spirit,

to acknowledge the hope within her,

giving her time,

standing resolute,

even amid her pain,

standing her ground,

staring into the camera

regaining power somehow...

Resolute in her defiance – v3

She stared straight at the camera,
resolute in her defiance, certain,
she would not let a cancer diagnosis,
define her, her life, her path, her hopes,
it wouldn’t limit her dreams, her happiness,
her choices, the next steps she would take...
 
Watching her wipe her tears, her fears,
pushing her auburn hair off her face,
the chapped lips worried, pursed,
speaking to her waiting, her anxiety,
before the awful verdict, the sentence,
pain, staring at the lens before her…
 
She was scared, terrified, really,
crying, shaken, devastated,
as if in an abusive relationship,
but she was strong, defiant,
ready for what came next,
for whatever it would take...
 
Ten years later, watching this video,
that awful moment, her crying, defiant,
the cancer long in remission,
two children later, that future,
that she had always dreamed of,
what she had made come to pass...
