my black-haired maiden – v3 #poetry #Ukraine #God #prayer #war #terror #genocide #Russia #peace #victory #TarasShevchenko #Taras #Shevchenko #muse #Ukrainian #glory #serfdom #prison #freedom #independence #history

rising from the black soil,
a picture of resolve, of beauty,
eyes that have seen so much sorrow,
war, terror unrelenting,
suffering of her homeland, Ukraine…

a heart open to sacrifice,
a life of service and pain,
putting her dreams on hold,
marshaling forces together,
to heal her homeland, Ukraine…

her same story repeating,
the subjugation of these people,
held in bondage by the Moskals,
struggling for independence, freedom,
my black-haired maiden, Ukraine…

too long has she suffered,
sacrificing her body, her life,
the fight they are fighting,
so much sorrow, so much pain,
suffering of her homeland, Ukraine…

but God goes with each of them,
a garment, a vyshyvanka of protection,
sustaining them in this battle, raging,
struggling for independence, freedom,
my black-haired maiden, Ukraine…
