The bear cub

Just off the woods road,
jarred by the Jeep's headlights,
a flurry of motion
the black bear cub startled
melting, a shadow,
over the stone wall
becoming one with the forest
The Maine Woods
the growing darkness
that still starry night.

into the park, the beauty

the rising of the mountain

filling our hearts, our view.

Just a space off the highway

preserved for all generations

the fields, the forests, the mountains

rising to touch the sky.
