the black ribbon of the roadway

the forest surrounding, holding

the black ribbon of the roadway

the white and dark green parting

to let us drive past

winter in control, holding

pillows of snow covering each branch

as we drive through the evergreens

a space within the woodlands

the forest enclosing, holding

parting for a moment, a space

where the woods remain untrammeled

growing, right up to the road
