my heart’s flying – v2

in darkness my liberty
I am not held by these chains,
by these prison walls,
sunset signals my escape,
I am freed of these bonds…
 
I mount to the height,
no weight, no resistance,
rising above, outside,
into the night air,
freed from my chains…
 
my heart’s flying,
far from this place
to my homeland, Ukraine,
praying the bright stars
will gather me home,
they will show me the way…

In an alien land – v2

You have deserted your mother,
your dying homeland, Ukraine,
you have fallen into the trap
of pleasures unknown…
 
You lay your head in palaces,
“in an alien land, amid strangers”,
forgetting about your deceased mother,
your barren homeland, Ukraine…
 
You have chosen your enemy,
your accursed master, the Tsar,
squandering your history, your future
for a false peace, comfort, but at a cost…
 
You has abandoned your identity,
your days will be like grasses,
gathered for the fire, a pyre,
the burning of Ukraina…

I have been brought to wait,
in this prison, in these chains
far from my homeland, Ukraine,
I await my fate, my lost days…
 
I have lost my liberty, my freedom,
listening to the fools to madmen,
I shall die far from my homeland, Ukraine
under the boot of the oppressor…

From the tomb a Kozak – v2

From the tomb a Kozak, gray, tired,
emerges from his sleep, his slumber,
in the darkness of the night…
 
He sings in sorrow, ancient songs,
for the cruel fate of his people,
their struggles, their internal strife…
 
How he aches for this people,
groaning in the darkness, aching,
return to the earth at dawn’s first light…

Though I am in chains,
bound for freedom’s sake,
I am held in prison,
I cry to the wind, my history,
to find me in my struggle,
to give me hope, peace …
 
Fly to me, my darling thoughts,
teased from the ether, spirit,
from memory, my life,
across time and space,
my history, my vision,
will remember my sweet Ukraina…

an echo of their world,
history, what might have been,
if God had governed,
if God had watched over
the steps I have taken
the love that was meant to be,
and yet never was, lost…
the bitter tears of memory,
of a life not lived, lost,
a simple ploughman of the land

I will stand beside you

I come to you, before you, my wife,
to share my heart with you, my beloved,
to speak truth, light, into your life,
into the cosmos, the air, the spirit,
across time and space, now,
to tell you I will always love you,
for as long as I have breath…
 
I will stand beside you,
in good times, in bad times,
trusting God to provide,
to walk with us, besides us,
in our journey together, that He
will be with us in struggle, in happiness…
 
I will love you in sickness, in health,
in all the days of my life, our days together,
when we are apart, separated by distance,
when you are as close at breath, our bodies
touching, bound together, one flesh,
whispering I love you, knowing your response…
 
I will cherish you always, for you are my desire,
the one God has prepared for me, a gift,
a chance for happiness, for fulfillment,
as close to the divine as breath, as hope,
for joy, for a promise, a prayer,
to love you, as long as I have breath…

Look in the mirror,
at yourself for the first time,
look at your neighbor,
the stranger, the other,
everyone you meet
as you go about your day…
 
Do you see them,
do you see them fully,
their aura, the presence,
can you sense the divine,
the sacred indwelling,
living within each heart…
 
Touch the sacred,
the holy, the spirits,
the lifeforce seeking
to joy, to enter, wanting,
to commune, to dwell,
within each heart…
 
Stretch beyond, outside
the bounds of your vision,
see with your heart, within,
the holy living, presence,
touch your neighbor, the sacred,
all of us gifted with the spirit,
a spark of the infinite divine…

Skin in the game – v2

Not just in theory, in fact,
I have skin in the game,
a dog in this fight,
nothing like neutral
in this war, this terror,
picking one side…
 
My heart is in Ukraine,
black soil, the people,
a flag of blue and yellow,
of the wheat and the sky,
even though I bleed our colors,
of red, white, and blue…
 
My heart grieves for these people,
for their suffering facing terror,
such terrible cost, war crimes,
so many killed, lives shattered,
so much lost, but not forgotten,
so much to restore, to be rebuilt…
 
Victory will come through attrition,
the grueling face of war, terror,
inch by inch, and mile by mile,
giving ground to save lives,
until that day comes, suddenly,
when the tipping point is breached…
 
I am not neutral, complacent,
I have skin in the game,
I believe in freedom for them,
just as Taras believed,
crying for his people,
and his Beloved, Ukraina…

Attrition – v2

Death, destruction, terror
like the Dresden bombings,
cities and towns, history, culture,
all are being turned to dust…
 
Attrition they say, war,
will lead us out of madness,
a tipping point will come,
to defeat the evil tyrant…
 
But what about the martyrs,
their best sons and daughters,
what about every defender,
killed in a cruel double-tap…
 
How long can we expect them,
to defend our freedom alone,
when we sit in our own comfort,
fear at arm’s reach, hidden…
 
Attrition but a word, truly,
except for the people living,
dying, injured, shattered,
feeling this war is all too much…
 
We must do more, better,
to stand beside them, helping,
so that attrition’s awful cost,
will finally bring victory…

her body wracked in pain,
in your turning from her,
loving other lovers,
forgetting all she is,
all she was to you, Ukraina…
 
Don’t forget your mother,
my brothers, my sisters,
this what I beg you,
remember Ukraina’s past,
her ancient glory, now
wearing another’s valor…
 
Stay true to her memory,
“let your mother smile with pleasure”,
as you turn back to your first love,
by the Dnipro, on the heights,
remembering our own story,
the glory of Ukraina…
 
Learn your own stories,
don’t adopt another,
cleave to your mother
breaking the chains, the fetters,
that hold you from her,

high on the mountain,
shrouded in clouds,
“with blood ever watered”,
their tears flowing down…
 
“illumined in sorrow”,
the mountains covered,
“with blood ever watered”,
tears, their anguish,
of the people living there…
 
struggle on, do not falter
for the battle, the tide is turning
on these mountains, glory
will soon rise again…

in the far-off mountain,
for the folly of conquest,

Three souls cursed by their people,
implicated in evil, the Moskal path,
submitting to terror, acquiescing,
not standing resolute, for Ukraine…
 
Three crows, the nations exposed,
bound to the path of evil,
compromised, fount of terror, of power,
caught, juxtaposed, in equipoise…
 
Three bards, the Kobzars,
an echo of their power,
bending the knee to evil,
unable to rise above…
 
One Great Grave to plunder,
one hope dashed on the heights,
a desperate struggle against evil,
before all hope is lost…

the Kobzars, the three bards…

Bodhan buried naked,
in an empty tomb…
 
but the song continues higher,
