If you watched the falling of the snow – v2

Slow down your anxious mind,

set yourself free of the day

put on your coat, your scarf

step outside.

If you watched

the falling of the snow

caught in the light, the sky

falling to the ground.

Swirling, pulled,

in eddies and whirls

landing, light, heavy

upon the fallen leaves.

Fading yellow, to rust

the oaks and the maples soon buried

under a blanket of white

a sense of calm, of peace.

How to describe this moment

Like some kind of confetti

shot from a cannon

the sky suddenly darker

against the sea of white

A burst of juncos

erupting from the tree

startled from their snacking

the cats grieving that their show

was turned to another channel

The world alive

brilliant in white

the azure sky

shining back in light

So beautiful the storm

after its passing

the world all sparkle

bright after the snowfalls

while the sun bathes us

Alive with shades

grades of color

the light reflecting

off the pure snow crystals

So beautiful in these moments

times to treasure

the stillness of winter

too soon melting, changing

after the storm’s passing

A world alive

brilliant in white

the azure sky

Teasing us to come

to spend time outside

to linger in the sunlight

to walk and look about

Warming sunshine

melting the snowdrifts

watching the glinting icicles

everywhere I go

Quickly coming, the curtains of white
falling so heavy
as the night gives way to bright
falling, falling
in sheets, in individual clusters
the heavy wet confection
landing on the branches
the carpet growing
thick pile to shag

The lawns returning
the ornaments, the features
the debris exposed
as are the shoots

Released from the snow
in spring returning
the white, turned to gray
now turning to green

Standing silent
white all around
in the comfort of my clothing
newly warm

In the womb of the storm
wrapped in the arms of snow
silence around me
in the cocoon of the snow

coating all, the trees, the houses
the wires, heavy in white
weighed down,
pulled to the ground
in silent worship
bowed down
prayerful
in love

Walking around yesterday
needing to go out
in the warmth of the day
not storms about

Wanting to see the sun
wrapped in its embrace
needing to see the world
the gift of this place

God gifting me
walking to the school
picking up the girls from work
walking along the way

Only in my vision captured
nothing film could hold
watching the brightness of the snow
the icicles row on row

A Challenge for the Plowman

A challenge for the plowman
thrown down in as in a duel
the road now five feet wider

To see if he will take the bait
make my work tomorrow easier
if he will keep the parking spaces open
there in front of the church

More than they had done
same as last year
a taste of their taking the bait
in that I only cleared a veneer

The snow blower put away
until the dawn breaks
a foot or more is predicted
we will have to parry,
joust another day

The Bite of the Shovel

The soft snow giving
the bite of the shovel
catching the sand thrown
covering the sidewalk
the blacktop frozen
glaze of black obsidian
the metal blade on the plastic
biting into the ice

Quiet on the street
few cars passing by
noticing the plowman
saw the edge of the street
wider than normal
from my earlier efforts
less of their work to do
shoveling the street

The Dance of the Fire

The wood already charred
its color on my fingers
building a teepee
over the discarded papers
kindled with the lighter
the flames licking the kindling
the dance of the fire
consuming all of the tissue
the paper and the trees
