By the side of the road I travel
a bit of wilderness, wildness,
a swamp contained but present
near the city, the urban sprawl.
What secrets do these waters hold,
what stories could they tell;
Are there other secrets buried here,
in the silent murky water?
A man-made pond behind them,
encroached on the east and west,
a ribbon of sidewalk before these wetlands
a road that I travel to work and back home again
connecting to the main drag.
Wild is this place, full of black water,
touching ancient evil, evidence;
How long have these secrets been forgotten,
drenched, but hidden in plain sight.
Water birds are so often present, fishing these waters,
sometimes watching the contractors near them
bringing people, housing, ever closer,
but the deer stalk this road each night.
