Weeding in our Garden

Finding the tares, the weeds
the grasses, the ragweed,
milkweed and plantain, growing, thriving
in the lilies, the beds, the wild mustard plants
all growing in the rich soil, growing in the sun
weeding in our garden, pulling the dead,
letting the light in, culling the weeds,
the roots, the dead leaves, those choking out
But seeing the clematis vines, the milkweed
home for monarchs, the yellow of the goldenrod
all part of the garden, the wild, untamed
the rocks too, all growing among tomatoes,
the cosmos, the lilacs, the maples,
a living wild, garden,
finding balance and color
a garden taking shape
a purpose coming into focus
slowly, carefully, prayerfully

Clothed like one of these

Oh to be clothed like one of the lilies of the field
the irises in my garden, the monarch, the cheetah
any number of plants and animals, living in creation
For they are clothed with fabrics of beauty, of bright colors
gifted with these by the creator, without work,
without toil, as they are made
So we should trust, in the provision of our savior
our loving father, watching for our needs
Trust in him and believe in his care
for he provides for those who will be
as the grasses of the field;
and those whom he loves,
how much more will we receive

Marigold Monarchs

Fidgety, shy, tremulous
introverted royalty
hide, run, burst to flight
normally, as I approach
with my predatory posture
sudden motion toward them
but not this day,
posing for the camera, star after star
ready for their closeup this day
holding still, primping,
pining for the camera
for their moment in the sun
for stardom

Berries

Like a thick cluster of ripe Concord grapes
The blueberries hung on the bush
Eager for my grasp, their liberation from the stalk
Drop, the fall into the can,
Hung like a horse’s feed bag around my neck

Sticky lush flesh clutched, grasped
Gingerly between my fingers
Don’t want to lose one

Smell the warm August air ‘round me
Drink the quiet of the farm
Forget time, other urgencies of life

Hunt for each bit of fruit
Hidden by branch and leaf
Treasures to be savored later

Monarch and dragonfly join my reverie
Break the stillness of the haze
Eager for the sweet harvest too
