Words are dangerous – v3

Cavalier, careless, unthinking
shot from our mouths
the sword of our tongues
Seeking gain, advantage
at the expense of our neighbors
A constant battle, raging,
our approach to discourse

Words are dangerous, a rapier,
when grounded in the world
the stuff of the earth, the flesh;
We are called to a different way
of love from our musings
to offer Christ to all
a light to the whole earth

Let Love inform our language
let Jesus guide our words
our struggles for justice
may we hear the words of old
Calling us to be God’s servants
to offer love to all, the other,
all the people on the earth

The guiding of our Savior
lived out in His journey
of offering love, forgiveness,
even when we were persecuting
when we denied our Maker
when we pierced our Brother’s hands
lifting Him on the tree

Christ forgiving, words uplifting,
at the moment of His anguish
abandoned and dying
that we would be free
Bearing witness
the power of that example
a light to the nations
hope for the whole world

Based on the comments of Jim Wallis on
Speaking of Faith, November 29, 2007
He was talking about whether to change politicians
or change the wind, to change the public opinion
which guides politics. He used the example
of President Johnson’s statement to the
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that it would
take 5 years for a voting rights bill but
it actually took 5 months to pass the Voting Rights Act,
after the March in Selma.

Words to Edify – v4

Our prayer, our hope
our wish for our living
that we would be guided by the Spirit
that we would seek
to follow Christ’s example
to lift up, to never harm,
our neighbor, the stranger.

That none of our actions
would seek to harm.
That none of our speech
that which we utter
would hurt, would cut another;
oh that all of our discourse
would be grounded in love.

Oh that all we say
that the words we choose
that our positions would be healing
that our words would be loving
to lift up, to edify
that everything we say and do is
for the glory of God.

Forgiveness is a Journey – v3

Perhaps we can understand
the cries of our Savior
hanging on the cross in pain,
crying out to God;
Asking how the Father,
though it was foretold,
could abandon Him unto death,
to save our mortal souls.

Forgiveness is a journey,
“for they know not what they do”,
the hurtful things we say
the things that we do;
Estranging us from God
and our brothers too
needing time to heal
to move beyond our anger.

Finding love, forgiveness,
in the way of the cross, a journey,
in that path that Jesus walked
and the way of the saints before us;
all who picked up their cross
and fought for peace, for justice,
for a brighter future, doing,
carrying the light of Christ.

Words can Destroy – v3

Far too often, so easy,
we believe the lie of the sing song
that sticks and stones will break our bones
but words will never hurt us
they leave lasting scars

Far too often, so easy,
whether on the playground
in the halls of power
even in church
within family

Words can destroy, cut,
tear down our neighbors
sowing division
starting a schism
pulling people apart

All of us called, each one of us,
to be lights to the nations
shining light in the darkness
sowing seeds of love
to the ends of the earth

That light is Love, Christ,
the fact of Jesus
to heal, to redeem us,
God come down to save us
walking the earth

Christ modeled love, mercy,
servanthood, compassion
not seeking earthly power;
Jesus chose the cross
to see us free from sin

He did not destroy, judge,
Christ offered forgiveness;
even on the cross
a prayer to Almighty God
for God to forgive us

We should lift up, shine,
carrying His message;
then we would truly be light
to pierce the darkness of this world
Christ’s hands and His feet

that all we say and do

Forgiveness is a Moment

Forgiveness is a moment
a choice in each instance;
Whether we choose to love
or to hold onto our anger

Forgiveness is a moment
a conscious fork in the road;
Forgiveness is  a way of living,
as we journey in the world

Forgiveness is a moment
a turning from our anger;
We choose to show mercy
as Christ showed to us

Forgiveness is a Lifestyle

Forgiveness is a lifestyle
choosing to be forgiving
to see each moment as an opportunity
to model Christ’s love
Forgiveness is a moment
a choice in each instance
whether we choose to love
or to hold onto our anger

Finding love, forgiveness
in the way of the cross
in that path that Jesus walked
and the way of the saints before us
all who picked up their cross
and fought for peace, for justice,
for a brighter future,
carrying the light of Christ

Freedom is a lifestyle
to choose to be more loving
an opportunity to model
Christ’s way of living
Forgiveness is a moment
a fork in the road
a way of living, journey
as we walk in the world

Perhaps we can understand
the cries of our Savior
hanging on the cross in pain
crying out to God

Forgiveness is a journey,
“for they know not what they do”,

the things that we do
estranging us from God
and our brothers too
needing time to heal
to move beyond our hate

Forgiveness is a lifestyle
a turning of our hearts
choosing forgiveness
whenever we are hurt
Forgiveness is a moment
a turning from our anger
choosing to show mercy
as Christ showed to us

Forgiveness is a choice
for our Savior, for each person,
to choose to let go of anger
of any feeling of revenge
to offer mercy, to give freely
Forgiveness is a choice
to be forgiving, to show mercy
as we journey, as we walk in life
