we are discarded

we are broken
we are discarded
we have loss our
sense of purpose
we stumble in this life
not sure of our value
we want to be faithful
but we long to be wanted
we turn to the wrong paths
seeking a place of  belonging

Matched Stones – v2

They once were even
matched to one another
the stones in their season
placed just so, perfect

Now lichen covered
years of wind and rain
snow and ice in their season
seeking to chip away

The rough-hewn granite
gathered from the fields
placed just so in another season
falling in this time, broken

Needing hands, care,
to lift the stones
matching them together
once more with a purpose
to be a measuring line

Hidden boundaries – v2

Soon the walls will be buried
the old stone structures
under the lichen, the moss,
the leaves, the needles
buried under the snow

Now merely obscured
their straight edges muted
the boundaries merely hidden
under the weight of autumn
under the leaves of this season

The leaves of this season added
to the litter on the ground
the nesting places for many
keeping warm under the layers
on the lee of the hillside

The straight lines marking
boundaries no longer with meaning
in another season
in another time
when others worked this land

herself on the altar – v11

She gave but two coins
but it was herself on the altar,
the widow in the temple
offering herself to God

We look to her example
of extravagant giving,
we long to be like her
in our faith journey

She gave but two coins
but she gave all of what she had,
she placed herself on the altar
offered unto God

The Surgeon at the Table

The surgeon at the table
before the first incision
those gathered round
attending to the patient
The surgeon at the table
holding the scalpel
cutting into flesh
to hasten the healing
Cutting out damaged flesh
the ache of the disease giving
letting go of the hold
of the patient in the theater
The surgeon at the table
using the skills they were given
to bring healing to the body
of the sleeping patient
The surgeon at the table
at the end of the procedure
looking at the stitches
hoping there is healing
for the soon waking patient
