We rise to worship,
oh, yes, we rise,
to praise the Lord,
a hallelujah, a word
to shake the world.
A new word of praise,
rising within me,
to heal my neighbors,
hope to the nations
in the coming of Christ.
We rise, we sing
one people, one body,
a new word of praise,
glory, hallelujah,
to Christ our King.

Where is our authority
When we speak of the Word,
our lives a witness,
we stand with Christ.
Some may ask,
where is our authority?
How can we speak?
Who do we think we are?
We can answer,
we can speak.
God gives us words to preach,
to share, to the ends of the earth.
Our hope is in God,
in his promise, his light,
shining bright, even still today.

The sense of the Unseen – v2
Something more out there;
but I know not what it is.
I have a certainty there is,
what we know but cannot see.
What is there still,
the sense of the unseen,
knowing something beyond is there.
The root of our faith,
all which we believe in,
is in the sense of the unseen.
This sense, gives us sight,
a passion, the fire,
to get up off our seat,
to go as we are led,
the faith to simply believe.

When I sin
A crushing weight
the truth of my failing
washing over me
when I sin, when I rebel,
when I reject the word of God
turning from his path
the course for my life
spitting on my Savior’s face
as if driving in the nails
mired in my clay
turning from his grace

When I refused to heed your words
Even then, in the midst of my sin,
away from the congregation, the body
God there with me still
calling, with authority
His Spirit calling, “don’t!
Be faithful; turn from your sin
There when I refuse to heed your words
going my own way, selfish
Mindful, aware that I was wrong
yet choosing to disobey
freedom run amuck
no boundaries, bad choices
lost in excess, my sin
Disobeying my Savior
who died on the cross
as if I was driving another nail
like the others, spitting in his face
away from the congregation, the body
God there with me still
calling, with authority
His Spirit calling, “don’t!

Compassionate healing
Not always about the person
who is hurting, possessed by demons
the stories as much about
the authority of Jesus
We see him choosing
not abiding by rules
using compassion
to heal us of our sins
our illness, sickness
driving out the demons
all for God’s glory
a place for us in heaven

casting out the demons
like so much of what we will see
in the way of Christ’s ministry
changing the rules
like the Sabbath rules on working
authority from heaven
not wisdom of the earth

Words of Authority
Words of Authority
spoken by Christ
from his center, his nature
out of God’s love
Speaking to the demon
casting him out
restoring the person
with a clear message
God’s kingdom is here
Christ speaking with power
the authority to heal

When I refuse to heed your words
Even then, in the midst of my sin,
away from the congregation, the body
God there with me still
His Spirit calling, don’t!
be faithful, turn from your sin
there when I refuse to heed your words
going my own way, selfish
mindful, aware that I am wrong
yet choosing to disobey
freedom run amuck
no boundaries, bad choices
lost in excess, my sin
disobeying my Savior
who died on the cross
as if driving another nail
spitting in his face
away from the congregation, the body
God there with me still
His Spirit calling, don’t!
be faithful, turn from your sin
there when I refuse to heed your words
going my own way, selfish
mindful, aware that I am wrong
yet choosing to disobey
freedom run amuck
no boundaries, bad choices

disobeying my Savior

Kingdom signs
what Jesus said
what he did among the people
kingdom signs
for those who would witness
tearing down walls
new authority
power within him
given directly
given to Christ
by the word of God
embodying love
here with us
a glimpse of heaven
God’s holy plan
living out God’s message
washing us with love

To dream heroic dreams – v3
Men like Copernicus, Columbus,
John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan
able to see, a vision beyond our boundaries
out into that bright unknown
Not stuck in our current state
bound by dust, by a sense of decay
wanting a brighter day
a hope for a better tomorrow
To dream heroic dreams
come what may
fighting to rise above
our dust, our miry clay
With God as our compass
holding onto God’s rights
liberty, with justice, compassion
seeking a brighter tomorrow
In heroic dreams for America
restored, renewed
leading the way to that future
ever stronger, beyond the horizon before us

The sense of the Unseen
Something more out there
the certainty there is
what we know but cannot see
what is there still
the sense of the unseen
knowing is there
the root of our faith
all which we believe in
the sense of the unseen
giving us sight
a passion, the fire
to get up off our seat
to go as we are led
to simply believe

The sense of God’s Presence
Knowing God is with us
walking beside us
no belief in coincidence
all about God’s presence
walking with us
calming our troubled spirits
living within us
lifting us up
There in the joys
the slack times, the struggles
crying with us, when we weep,
rising before us, preparing a path for us
the arms of the Father open
for each prodigal child
wooing us to heaven
walking by our side

walking beside us
no belief in coincidence
all about God’s presence
walking with us
calming our troubled spirits
living within us
lifting us up
There in the joys
the slack times, the struggles
crying with us, when we weep,
rising before us, preparing a path for us
the arms of the Father open
for each prodigal child
wooing us to heaven
walking by our side

Sometimes elusive
struggling as we do
a sense of Peace, deeper

The sense of Beauty
across the other senses
somehow deeper still
unable to truly quantity
what it is to see beauty
just something that is
the sense of beauty precious
giving us something wonderful
magic, as we walk in life
precious in moments
in gossamer lights

the senses
we are too grounded
bound by the senses
as if there are only
the ones we speak of
as if the universe
framed by just five
hearing, sight, smell,
taste and touch
these only the beginning
bounds of imagination
stumbling in the dark
needing to quest for light
more still out there
beyond that horizon
wonder, beauty, peace
a sense of God’s presence,
of wonder, of magic
an awareness of the unseen
beyond our pedestrian dreams

To dream heroic dreams – v2
Copernicus, Columbus,
Kennedy, Reagan
a vision beyond our boundaries
out into the unknown
Not stuck in our current state
bound by the dust, decay
wanting a brighter day
a hope for tomorrow
To dream heroic dreams
come what may
fighting to rise above
our dust, our clay
With God as our compass
holding onto God’s rights
liberty, with justice, compassion
seeking a brighter tomorrow
In heroic dreams for America
restored, renewed
leading the way to that future
ever beyond the horizon

out of his own authority – v2
Like the best modern preachers
one way to visualize
to attempt to go back
to the beginning, Capernaum
Christ, out of the pulpit
alive with fire, with passion
singing God’s praise
No notes, no cross-references
filled with God’s Spirit
Christ’s teaching, holy
out of his own authority
gripping them with power
authentic worship
sharing the Father
God’s Kingdom come near

Did they fear the Light – v2
How could the People
so blessed by God’s promise
turn their backs on God
not wanting to be in His presence
under the pillar, the cloud, the fire
His brilliance, His light
running away, hiding
needing a prophet
like Moses, going
before God’s presence
why did they shun God
Did they fear the Light
or were they just stupid
knowing what they would do
that they would face the judgment of God
ignoring his command, rebelling against the precepts
not wanting God to know, even though He is omniscient

out of one’s being
how to describe
what it must have been like
to hear the words of Jesus
at the beginning of his ministry

filled with God’s message
pouring out a blessing
exousia, out of his being,
all that he was
power, authority
sharing God’s message
to heal the whole world

out of his own authority
Like the best modern preachers
one way to visualize
to attempt to go back
to the beginning, Capernaum
out of the pulpit
alive with fire
singing God’s praise
No notes, no cross-references
filled with God’s praise
Christ’s teaching, holy
out of his own authority
gripping them with power
authentic worship
sharing the Father
the Kingdom come near

Happy in My Dust – v2
Going forward
to receive my ashes
humble in my spirit
but feeling your love
Happy in my dust
contemplating my past
knowing you are with me
in the stormy blast
Taking on my sin
my stain upon you
redeeming me by your blood
changing my life in you
Able to stand, alive
only because of your grace
able to stand before God
to see his heavenly face
Needing you with me
to rise above my dust
to walk in your light
carrying Christ into the world
making the darkness bright

Lent Beginning – v2
Forty days of focus
our reflection on his journey
the walk of our Lord
heading to eternity
Going before us
setting a holy example
the righteous life
by the spirit of the Law
Walking toward Jerusalem
from the countryside
into the center
the belly of the beast
Shining his light
glowing since the mountain
God’s Spirit guiding him
on the journey to the cross
Putting a spotlight
on the hypocrisy of the leaders
their rigid dogma
forgetting the love of God
Showing a different model
a loving presence, mercy
choosing to heal and sooth
the ache of God’s people
Pressing on, leading inward
to the triumphant entry
into David’s holy city
fulfilling all prophecies
Teaching the disciples
preparing them for later
after he had gone
to sit back upon his throne
Suffering for us, dying
choosing to sacrifice
to take on our sin
a living example of God’s love
Climbing the cross
dying in anguish
the stain of our sin
the full price forever paid
Rising on the third day
ascending into glory
the rest of us waiting
for his return some day

A Forty-Day Season – v2
Days of Lent
a forty-day season
able to change our lives
if we would let them
Reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice
our savior going to the cross
the real meaning of God’s grace
God’s infinite love
Unworthiness of man
not enough to stop him
choosing to go to Calvary
to seal the ancient breach
Stains of sin from Adam
and those made by each person
all washed away by his blood
at the end of the holy season.

Easter People – v2
People not of the cross, the grave
we are the ones, rejoicing
dancing on Easter morning
joy comes in the rising,
Not in Christ’s sacrifice alone
atonement yes; but the rising,
our risen Lord and Savior,
living from that moment on the third day
Defeating sin and death,
for all time, eternal
We rise, sing praises to the king,
bow and jump up
with the dawn
The tomb is empty!
The Savior lives!

In this Season of Lent – v2
Turning toward Jerusalem
going with Jesus, the Christ
with his disciples
on the way
to David’s holy city
On the road covered with palms
going to the upper room
the garden too, Gethsemane
where Jesus prayed
In the city, the temple
calling out the leaders
the money changers to task
overturning their tables, cast out
There when he was betrayed
when their belief shook
when they doubted
they denied, afraid
when they ran away
Watching, in our fear,
the false trial, the mob, shouting
lies before the Sanhedrin
his lashes at the hands of the Romans
His sentence, death
the shame, the gauntlet
wearing the crown, thorns
going to the skull
nailed to the cross
When he died, Friday
crying out to God
darkness, the temple
the curtain torn to the ground
The cross, the grave,
the darkness of the cave, the tomb
Glorious Easter, alive!
the whole world set to right

Marked by the Ashes – v2
Marked by the ashes,
the stain of your offering
a reminder of the dust,
dirt from which we come
the ancient rituals,
ashes of the offering
humble before our God
falling at the altar,
in the temple, before you
bringing a noble sin offering,
his body for our lives,
consumed, the pyre of the cross
to the earth he was returned,
into the grave, the cold ground
marked by the earthly ashes
of the bodies we borrow
for we rise as he rose,
as he is risen still
at the end of this journey
when it is our time to go
to return to the kingdom
where our spirit will live

Eating Meat Sacrificed to Idols
If we were pressed, if Paul challenged us
what would we say of our freedom
how we are living our lives
eating meat, sacrificed to idols
living embedded, in the world
no different, no different
than any other, are we a light
shining in the darkness
we are an example,
whether or not we want to
claiming the name of Jesus
but eating the meat offered
sacrificed to idols
going with the flow
no different than the world

A Plumb Line for their Speaking
The measure of our witness
the prophetic voice
do they sound like Jesus
what we know of our God
a plumb, a measure
the scales for their speaking
are the prophets sharing
a message of love
something worth repeating,
emulating, follow
do their words sound as those
they are raised from scripture
speaking to us, a message
infused with God’s Spirit
sharing with us
a glimpse of God’s love

According to your grace
Thank you, God
for the gift of Jesus
no longer to be judged by my works
but according to your grace
my joy overflowing, without end
the Savior’s blessing, to me again
grace washing over me
raised from the grave
the wages of my folly
the distance of my sin
how incredibly grateful
for your gift, oh God
Lord, help me be faithful

nothing less
unswerving loyalty
fealty to the cross
to the words of God
the prophets speaking
written within us
the Spirit’s leading

Remember God's deeds
When you are feeling low
when you are wandering, lost
the world too big, you’re too small
the waves casting you about
Remember God’s deeds
his graciousness, his love
sending us the prophets, his Son
the Spirit walking within
God here with us
even now, in our struggles
in our trials, the shadow times
God’s love still remains
ever will he be here
as near as our breath
God’s words written within us
inscribed on our beating hearts

An even greater prophet
More than all the others
Moses, the others
the prophets of the people
speaking the word of God
There will come another
a prophet for God’s people
living out God’s promise
the living Word of God
come to live among us
to teach us of God’s promise
God’s love for all of us
seeking to bring us back
into the arms of Jesus
the arms of the Father
wooing us to him
the living Word of God
