We have lost part of our ethos

We look to the government, to Washington,
to fill a void in our culture, a vacuum,
the collapse of the family, the church,
the anchor in our lives
Lost in a Devil’s Bargain…

Prosperity, urbanization, the industrial revolution,
things that tore us from the land, family,
away from our faith, community,
caused an awful breach,
A vacuum to be filled…

Society reached for the center
when we were in crisis,
the Great Depression,
to heal inequity, poverty,
But we paid an awful price…

Divided against ourselves
neighbor against neighbor,
calling them the Other,
separated into camps,
Not trusting one another...

How do we return, extricate,
returning power from the center
when the vacuum that was created
the same truth remains, present,
When we chose the Devil’s Bargain…

Let us draw near, to Christ,
to the One who understands us,
to the throne of faith, of grace,
let us draw near to sit,
at the feet of the risen Christ…
 
Oh God, You call each of us,
to walk in Your ways, Your light,
let us draw near, to drink,
to be empty, to be filled
from the cup of eternal life…
 
Let us draw near, to Christ,
to the One who understands us,
as risen people of faith, of hope,
let us draw near to sit,
at the feet of the risen Christ…

dipping my cup, again, Lord,
into the waters, connected,
into the well of scripture,
into the pool of worship,
the living water of love,
springs of community,
fed within Your vine…
 
dipping my cup, again, Lord,
into the waters, connected,
when I am dry, when I am empty,
longing for the living water,
for the well springs of life,
coming to the waters,
to be healed, to be fed…

into the well of scripture,

when we are dry, thirsty,
in our bodies, in our spirits,
let us return to the well,
may our lives be refilled…
 
returning to the well,
dipping my cup, again,
drinking of the living water,
in love, in community…
 
let us draw near to God
and to one another,
let us drink of the cup,
of life, the living waters…
 
returning to the well,
of praise, of worship,
praying in community,
with love for one another…
 
let us draw near to God,
to our brothers, our sisters,
may we drink till we are filled,
quenching the thirst in our spirits…

When you feel unworthy,
When you are broken,
When you feel incapable,
When the sirens whisper
You are not good enough…
 
Remember these words of scripture
This promise from the Creator,
Our hope in Christ Jesus,
Listen to God’s whisper,
Speaking to your soul…
 
You are enough,
You have been anointed,
You have been appointed,
I have called you for a purpose,
I called you before you were born…
 
You are enough,
You are my children,
You are infused with power,
I have called you for a purpose,
I will give you everything you need…
 
You are enough,
You can stand in the gap,
You will be able to do this,
I have called you for a purpose,
I will send you, trust in me alone…

Are we at our post – v2

We are to be a sentry at our post,
Ready for the Enemy, for Satan,
To defeat His attacks,
To protect the Body…
 
Are we at our post, ready,
Are we prepared for battle,
Have we put on the armor of God,
Are we prepared for the fight?
 
Is there a gap in the fortress,
In the defenses of the City,
Where we are to stand watch,
In the courses of the night?
 
Attacks of the Enemy can enter
A hole where we are missing,
In the Body, in God’s kingdom,
In God’s plan for humanity…
 
The Body is unprotected,
When we are broken,
When we walk away
from the Body, the Church…
 
We must be at our post,
Prepared for the battle,
We must put on the armor of God,
We must protect the Body…

A sentry at our post – v2

We are called for a purpose,
We are part of the Body,
We are a sentry at our post,
Ready for the Enemy,
To defeat His attacks,
To protect the Body…
 
What if we are not at our post,
When we are broken,
When we are absent,
When we walk away
from the Body, the Church,
Leaving the Body unprotected…
 
An essential part of the Body
Is missing, a post is empty,
Attacks of the Enemy can enter
A hole where we are meant to be
In the Body, in God’s kingdom,
In God’s plan for humanity…
 
We must turn, we must return,
We must take our battle station,
We must fill our place on the wall,
To stand with the others, to defend,
To stand in the gap ready, protected,
To protect Christ’s Body, the Church…

We are called for a purpose,

We are a sentry at our post,

Ready for the Enemy,

What if we are not at our posts,

each drop breathed, a prayer – v2

a painted word-picture,
each drop breathed, a prayer,
speaking to each one of us
through our eyes, our memory,
words of love, of beauty, grace,
an image grafted, melting into our story…
 
dust, droplets of rain, transparent beads,
liquid glass, dew, like melted sugar,
dabbed, brushed on each petal,
like Jack Frost’s confection,
another time, a season,
when blossoms do not exist…
 
living flesh sprayed by the droplets,
a repeating pattern, precision,
frozen for us in the image, the moment -
Drink it all in, heavy with memory,
present, captured forever,
after a brief morning rain shower…

Jesus is the Good Samaritan – v2

Jesus is the Good Samaritan
we are the wounded traveler,
bleeding on the side of the road;
Jesus cleans our cuts, He bandages us,
Jesus heals our wounds,
Jesus takes us to sanctuaries,
until his return entrusting us
to the saints to the sheep.
 
Jesus is the one who heals us,
His blood washed us,
Christ cleans of our wounds;
May our churches be hospitals,
for the sick, the hurting, the beaten,
until Christ’s return.
 
Jesus is the Good Samaritan
the Shepherd, the great physician,
our example, showing us how to love;
May we not be like the Pharisee,
unlike the Levite; may we be marked by Jesus;
May Christ inform our every step;
We are healed by the blood,
by the oil of the love of Jesus.
 
Jesus calls us to go out and find them,
in the wilderness, out on the road;
to go out to heal them; to lift them,
to tend to their wounds, their pain;
While we too are bleeding in sin
in our brokenness.
