Amygdala hijack – v4

His words incoherent, gibberish,
her face beet red, sweating,
decibels rising, quickly,
shouting, unrelenting panic,
a baby’s tiny, clenched fists…

Amygdala hijack, chaos,
in full flower, erupting,
no chance at compromise,
no possibility for agreement,
for another two hours, at least…

Snake Brains on the Courthouse Steps – v3

Ancient response, predictive,
learned behavior, automatic,
more instinctive, without thinking…

Fear, panic, amygdala hijack,
reason dissolving, anxious, impatient,
wanting to run, to flee in terror…

Seeking compromise, a solution,
reason, decision, impossible, devolving,
to the primitive, in the grip of the snake…

driving to her home – v2

knowing her trials, her struggles
bringing representation to her
driving to her home
meeting her where she lived;
honoring her, worthy,
as a client, as a person;
advocating for her interests
for herself, for her children.

knowing her trials, her struggles
seeking to do the right things
navigating the shoals present
competing choices before us;
seeing her first as a person
of sacred worth to God;
advocating for her interests
for herself, for her children.

the beast comes from within – v3

an awful power, raw,
his words speaking truth
the beast comes from within
though we would deny it
claiming we are innocent
of awakening the beast

that what we fear
unbridled temptations
giving in to the beast
leading us downward
in that spiral, that chaos
that conflict within

chaos calling
wooing us with lies
with our imperfections
pulling us downward
when we feed the beast,
the flesh somehow

When a big dog attacks – v3

I have seen them, losing control
their response engrained
stimuli perhaps hidden
from my sight, subtle
but instant, visceral, reacting
pure instinct, amygdala
as when a big dog attacks
seeing the manifestation
body language, reason
shattered in an instant
their programmed reactions
deep within their brains
something instinctive
primal, primitive
learned long before
when the big dog attacks
the same in the court
in settlement, resolution
on cue devolving,
by a word, an action,
a mere twitch of a micro-muscle
of the eyebrow, the forehead,
back into survival mode, not thinking
losing perspective, losing control
and losing their case

Happy to be Dad – v2

I wasn’t there with you
when you took your first breath
when you staggered and fell
learning to stand, to walk

You were older
in a way your own selves
formed in part before I knew you
growing on the vine

But I’m happy to be Dad
living now with you
helping your Mom
as you become yourselves

Not a moment
would I really alter
as you test and shout
finding your way in the world

Sometimes we struggle,
but that is part of growing;
I hope I can give you wings
that you may fly to the heights
