forgetting the essential truth –
With great blessings
comes great responsibility...
 
embracing isolation
in an age of information -
Two oceans do not protect us
for we are a global power
with great responsibility...
 
neutrality is not an option
in an age of genocide –
our choices matter...
We must make moral choices
for we have great responsibility...
 
embracing isolation
yet asserting our power
abrogating the rule of law
siding with the autocrats

We are not at an inflection point, but several at once,
Different strands within the same cord…
The rise of authoritarians, their minions,
Jack-booted thugs, armed little Satans -
Just as we were warned by history -
There is a rise in violence against innocents,
Riots are rising, marching, children taken...
All these threads are interwoven,
Shoots, branches grafted in the same vine -
Tares growing within fields of wheat -
We do not know the fruit they will bear…
 
We see civil war, resistance against repression,
Brothers warring against brothers...
Cell-phone cameras of an army…
Believe your eyes, not propaganda,
Lies of those in power, shouting,
Demanding submission, uneven...
Every meeting, every statement
None of them alone unravels the system, but
Together they weave pressure across borders,
Over time, across pivotal junctures...
 
Sometimes we ponder, seeing the threads,
Seeing more clearly than the actors…
Someone pulling on just one strand,
Thinking only of the immediate, this moment,
This action, not on the ripple effects,
A butterfly effect of consequences…
Upheaval, vulnerable weapons at the ready,
Asymmetrical warfare against great powers
Based on the show of force, their tactics,
Forgetting the world has already changed…
 
Change is upon us, titans fighting -
An Age of Empires or Freedom -
Only time will tell, in its own time,
Catharsis is never tidy; it is cumulative, building,
relentless, and ever-patient. People who endure,
who persist in speaking truth, are the ones
who bend the arc of history toward justice,
even when it feels invisible day by day…
Chaos and patience exist side by side —
Both are part of God's work...

The Strait of Hormuz

An inevitable escalation,
the closure of the waterways,
the chokepoint of the free world,
the way for oil, natural gas,
the lifeblood of economies,
a way to exert power, autonomy,
to fight their ancient enemies…
 
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz
power claimed in the vacuum,
Iran escalating further, stopping
the flow of commerce abruptly,
an inevitable next step, foreseen,
if we had eyes that were open
after their sites were bombed…
 
There are no easy answers,
a repeat of Operation Praying Mantis (?),
war raging unabated, nowhere is safe,
in the crucible of this moment
asymmetric warfare, power,
sand thrown into the gears,
shutting the world down…

Negotiation, appeasement,
Calling for “A Two-State Solution”,
Allies discussing, debating,
How they should they be fettered,
How Israel should react
To what they see as war,
An existential threat…
 
Iran attacked them, yes,
A reprisal, but who is the enemy,
What is the longer view, the history,
What is the consequence, the cost,
Blood flowing, blood remembered,
Hostages taken, murdered,
Blood crying to be avenged…
 
Disproportionate responses,
Massive retaliation, endless
Volleys, waves of searing attacks,
How will this play about,
While the US Congress dithers,
Debating if we will support,
If we will truly “Stand with Israel”…

Another #Shabbat with too many missing

Another week ending, pausing,
stopping the daily struggle, this madness,
touching their history, their story,
Opening the Torah, remembering God.
 
Dusk falling, fallen, gathering into worship,
remembering creation, the hand of God,
but too many missing, a peace shattered,
Like the night of Kristallnacht, horror raging.
 
Too many killed, injured, too many stolen, taken,
by an enemy, terror, coming to their homeland,
a place of peace, of sanctuary, yet no rest for the People
Another Shabbat with too many missing, shattered.
 
But a resolve palpable, even in stopping,
in pondering, remembering all that God provides,
a moment, a day, of rest from their labors,
Knowing there is so much yet to be done…

There should be a consequence to Syria, if it did use chemical weapons against its own people. The legal way to do that is through the UN and the Security Council. And that approach should have been used each time they have done so. As morally reprehensible it may be, it is not for a single nation state to right all the wrongs in the world. And, more to the point, how will a unilateral strike achieve any of the goals or purposes articulated; AND, how will the world or America be safer now and in the coming months and years if we were to bomb Syria? There will be a military response from Syria (at least) that will undoubtedly widen the scope of the law. I am left thinking of the speech in the move, A Man for All Seasons when Thomas More is defending the requirement to work within law.
