The Stagger of the Bumblebee – v2

Like a drunk who had a bit too much

or maybe the dance of the scarecrow;

The uncut scenes of Oz

so long, so long ago.

The stagger of the bumblebee

as if on toddler’s legs;

Lurching from bloom to bloom

finding little peace.

Such urgent work they are on,

never stopping to enjoy;

The beauty of each blossom

no rest for those in flight.

A Neoprene Monk – v2

Not a Gorton’s Fisherman,

no he doesn’t have the hands,

the weathered brow, the calluses,

the smell of fish, squared shoulders,

or the sound of the rocky Maine coast

Mustard yellow hooded,

bearded and bespectacled,

a neoprene monk, myself,

looked back from the wet car window

mirrored in the rain in the church lot

A bumblebee, a lady bug,

and a yellow princess

in tow, coursing across the puddles,

‘round the courtyard,

burst through the door,

Ready for the moist greetings

of pastors and friend

commotion in the narthex

before the race to the coat rack

the clamor to the classroom

Sanctuary and refuge

on a rain soaked morning

in a wet-frozen May

glad to be inside

A Drunken Dancer

Like a drunken dancer
trying to catch a mate
rejected by those on the sidelines
moving from place to place

Wobbling in the air
not sure of the footing
moving from blossom to blossom
trying to alight

Staggering even in stillness
the air dead calm
nothing but its own desire
driving it fitfully on

Going as instinct leads
from flower to precious flower
hurtling on the still breezes
search for nectar so sweet

A Hidden Bloom

The rich, full, round rhododendron
bloom hidden, nestled
snug behind the yew, full green
deep forest, radiant chartreuse
where the growing edges are
the pink-purple bloom
hidden below the porch
found only by the bumblebees
drawn by its nectar, by its calling

Gathering the Good Stuff

Rolling in the pollen,
gathering the nectar
a bumblebee at work, on the job
capturing in my viewfinder,
discovered again in the picture
a busy bee, yellow and black
in the soft colors of the flower
the bloom in the church’s
garden. Spreading the pollen,
germinating, making the flower
seed, spreading the color
filling the gaps in the garden
with color, with the fruits
of the bee’s labor, those of its fellows
buzzing in the garden
