for how you provide

thank you God for your presence
when we are lost, when we are hurting
thank you for being there
in the dark places, this journey
thank you for how you provide
what I have needed and part of my wants
loving me enough, caring for me
for not abandoning me
when I became the Prodigal
when I denied you, when I wandered
thank you God for all you have given
thank you for life and for life eternal

give adoration to God

not just on our knees
sitting in our prayer closets
purposefully in prayer
give adoration to God
all your days
with your whole lives
God is worthy
of all we can give
Creator of the universe
all that is, all that ever was
speaking light into the darkness
saving us from death

Declaring Our Freedom – v2

Why are we silent
knowing we are free
we should be singing
not just for our nation
but for all believers
singing praises to Go

Because of our Savior, His sacrifice
more than the words on the parchment
changing us from the dead
giving us our freedom
that we may live again
in the splendor of God’s kingdom

Why are we silent, why don’t we shout
hosanna, Amen, Hallelujah
we have been redeemed,
saved from the dead
freed from our chains
the wages of sin

A dream born, alive – v2

The seeds of freedom
a dream born, rekindled,
alive now, in this season
this moment in time.
a hope for the nations
a light reborn, anew,
shining in the darkness
hope alive, restored
the sparks glowing
a dream that continues;
Life evermore.

Dependent on Christ – v2

Choice, our free will,
To die to our sin
To shake off the chains;
To truly live.

Dependent on Christ
The source of our strength;
The rock, the refuge,
The fount of God’s grace.

a new life in Him – v2

Freed of our sentence
of our judgment, death,
alive in Christ alone.
Redeemed if we will follow
a new life in Him.
Offered, that we may choose
to follow the call of our Master
or to follow the way of the world
to death and damnation.

A New Nation – v2

As was remembered, four score and seven years later
our nation, a new nation, one people together,
was brought forward; but not by war, willed
created by the words written in that hall
the words of that Philadelphia summer
making a bold statement, written out loud

Changing our world, splintering an empire
held together by might, for a dream of freedom
All are equal, all must be free
so is our pledge, our plea
the dream of America, still unfulfilled

So many summers gone by
so far have we come, so far yet to go
for the dream of America to be a reality;
but I hear freedom starting to ring
part of the dream given voice
by another pastor, fifty years ago;
may it rise in our hearts today.

Words of Mettle – v2
July 4, 2008
Words of Mettle
Read before writing the series of poems on 7/4/2008:
-          Mayflower Compact,
-          Declaration of Independence,
-          Gettysburg Address,
-          Emancipation Proclamation,
-          Preamble to Constitution,
-          Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, 8/28/1963
written for July 4th celebration
Wesley United Methodist Church
Concord, NH
In reading this, I noted that the nomination speech
of the Democratic Convention this summer
will be on the 45th anniversary of Dr. King’s speech

A Slave to Sin No More – v2

I am freed from my past
the shackles of this life
by the blood shed on Calvary
the sacrifice of Christ
Putting on the weight
the oppressive weight of my sin
Freeing me ever
redeeming me from the pit
I rise from the grave
from eternal damnation
the wages of sin, no more,
saved from certain death

A slave to sin no more
able to face God, righteous,
to come before my Maker
to rise from my knees
a smile upon my face
To run to my Lord, my Father
knowing His arms are open
a beloved child, me,
of the Creator of the universe.
All that was, is, and shall be
redeeming me, even me.

Alive with Christ – v2

Freed of our path
boldly to proclaim life
alive with Christ
through the gift of His sacrifice
His death on the cross

Rising with Christ
from the watery grave
Alive with Christ
till our dying day
to live again in glory

From the end of this path
a future to be, promised,
freed from the bonds of this life
spending eternity with our Lord
after the end of this age
