Dew, mist, today’s light rain shower,
exposed her artistry, her precision
that which she meant to hide...
 
Droplets heavy on the gossamer
jewels festooned on the threads,
the lattice of her craft, her handiwork.
 
Strands of pearls more than strung, knitted,
hung as if weightless in space...
outlining this creator’s masterpiece...
 
Each time she stitched the lines,
casting her net into the breeze,
what would normally be invisible, hidden...
 
Panes of deadly glass glazed to capture,
her prey in her clutches, the unwise,
the unseeing, falling onto her trap...
 
Her adorned confection, a tapestry,
her trap, shown in its beauty,
by the furtive wet...

May this war come to an end
with freedom for these people
the brave men and women,
for all the children of this land
Awash in blue and yellow…
 
May sunflowers bloom in Ukraine
May there be a great grain harvest
may they be able to return, to rebuild,
In peace, soon, in their homeland
Awash in blue and yellow…
 
May peace take root, firmly planted
in their rich, dark soil, this earth,
May they walk in their lives freed
from aggression, in their homeland
Awash in blue and yellow…

cleaning a slicer in a tutu

vivid, bright, neon, purple,
a headpiece, a crown, to match,
a broad smile, laughing,
turning to the next task…
 
effortlessly turning,
from one station to another,
cleaning a slicer in a tutu,
oh, what a joyful sight…
 
part of the family, the team,
though she is still brand new,
smiling, laughing…
what are we to do…
 
cleaning slicers in a tutu,
in the deli where I slice,
joyfully doing, serving,
embracing the work to do…

We have lost part of our ethos

We look to the government, to Washington,
to fill a void in our culture, a vacuum,
the collapse of the family, the church,
the anchor in our lives
Lost in a Devil’s Bargain…

Prosperity, urbanization, the industrial revolution,
things that tore us from the land, family,
away from our faith, community,
caused an awful breach,
A vacuum to be filled…

Society reached for the center
when we were in crisis,
the Great Depression,
to heal inequity, poverty,
But we paid an awful price…

Divided against ourselves
neighbor against neighbor,
calling them the Other,
separated into camps,
Not trusting one another...

How do we return, extricate,
returning power from the center
when the vacuum that was created
the same truth remains, present,
When we chose the Devil’s Bargain…

A #Sunflower Grows – v3 #Ukraine

Day by day, stronger,
a seed grows, a hope,
taller and taller, resurgent,
climbing toward the sun
yearning, striving, into the light…
 
Ants and beetles, locusts,
nibble, shred its leaves, injured;
but it grows, it still grows, stronger,
chartreuse, bright green, vibrant green
verdant green, youthful, living, alive…
 
Needing the sky, the sun, the light,
four feet and more still, growing,
a single head, ready to unfurl
to burst forth, in glory, in praise,
singing a song for our Creator God…
 
Triumphant in blooming
vivid yellow, like the sun,
the beauty of their nation, their people
standing tall against the clear blue sky,
never far from the rich black soil,
the land they fight for, they love...

The bite of the apple – v2

the bite of the apple,
the snap of its skin, a pop,
a memory transcendent,
oh, where should I begin?
with our family, our fun...
 
a crisp fall day, crossing into Vermont,
from our home in New Hampshire,
finding the orchard, the spot,
where will I find, the best, the jewel,
climbing the ladder, for a McIntosh…
 
foliage like a postcard, the hills beyond,
frost in the shadows, grasses, the fallen leaves,
color all around us, reds, and orange,
air crisp and cold, clear, azure,
flannel and corduroy, sweatshirts,
the warmth of hearth or home…
 
climbing the branches,
gathering the drops,
the scent of cider rising,
going into the warming hut,
what smells they have got…
 
the bite of the apple,
the snap of its skin, a pop,
wanting to taste it all, a memory,
a thick slice of sharp cheddar from the wheel,
hot cider as tart as tea…

wearing their royal regalia,
vibrant colors of their clan,
holding to the fence behind them
buglers ready for battle,
their banners held high…
resting, ready at the ramparts,
heeding the battle cry.
 
coiled trumpets, at the ready,
their lips on the mouthpiece,
ready to blow, the battle cry,
strong and steady the archers,
horseback riders lined up row on row,
all of them heed the drummers,
for the buglers, their battle cry…

Sausage – v5

A short tale of whimsy, a trifle,
a bit of confection, of spice
Forget the frank, the hot dog -
Give me the Fenway sausage.
Lansdowne or Yawkey, just give me the street,
the crowds, the carts, the smells.
Sausage you shrug, you, the reader,
of this trifle, this whimsy -
 
What do I mean, me the storyteller?
Read on, won’t you please.
 
Sliced bell peppers and big chunks of onions
gathered, lathered, on the fresh bun,
they tempt the palate, tease the tongue,
open wide the bun and spread hot mustard
set the stage, the moment, for the star…
the scorched and blackened piece of meat
reminds me of every sausage, each one,
I have eaten before.
 
So much memory, in the tastes,
treasure beyond measure, of family and fun
of ballgames, tailgates, and the carnie;
a cacophony of moments
dripping with that same grease.
Do you smell it too, sizzling,
on the smoky hot grill?
 
My lips curl with a smirk
as I write these lines for you,
as I laugh to myself, again,
of the pleasures of excess
and the lusty gluttony
of eating. . . another one.

A short tale of whimsy, a trifle,

a bit of confection, of spice,

Forget the frank, the hot dog - 

Give me the Fenway sausage.

Lansdowne or Yawkey, just give me the street, 

the crowds, the carts, the smells.

Sausage you shrug, you, the reader,

of this trifle, this whimsy - 

What do I mean, me the storyteller?

Read on, won’t you please.

Sliced bell peppers and big chunks of onions

gathered, lathered on the fresh bun,

they tempt the palate, tease the tongue,

open wide the bun and spread hot mustard

set the stage, the moment, for the star,

the scorched and blackened piece of meat

reminds me of every sausage, each one, 

I have ever eaten before...

So much memory, in the tastes,

treasure beyond measure, of family and fun

of ballgames, tailgates, and the carnie;

a cacophony of moments

dripping with that t same grease.

Do you smell it too, sizzling,

on the smoky hot grill?

My lips curl with a smirk, a laugh,

as i write these lines for you,

as I laugh to myself, again,

of the pleasures of excess

and the lusty gluttony

of eating. . . another one.

May this war come to an end
with freedom for these people
the brave men and women,
for all the children of this land
a sea of blue and yellow.
 
May sunflowers bloom in Ukraine
may there be a great grain harvest
may they be able to return, to rebuild,
in peace, soon, in their homeland
a sea of blue and yellow.
 
May peace take root, firmly,
in their rich, dark soil, this earth,
may they walk in their lives freed
from aggression, in their homeland
a sea blue and yellow…

Where Your Ashes Lay – v2

I saw again, the picture
where your ashes lay, shared,
on the frozen, snow-covered ground
spread out on the side of the slope
the mountain you loved so well…
released to the winds, to the earth
your ashes feeding the ground,
trees, the mosses, the grasses,
ferns of that hillside you love,
long since one with the soil
returned to earth, to the dust,
may God grant rest for your soul…

Acceptance – 2 – v2

It has now been thirty years,
since that night when the ice caught you,
when you spun out of control, into traffic,
I so remember that night, seeing you,
knowing you were gone, forever…
 
I still talk to you, sharing, openly,
about my joys, my struggle,
about the times we never had,
I remember when I became older,
older than you ever would be…
 
So strange to think of it, years,
accepting the reality, the truth,
how many years, moments, lifetimes,
how many others you never met,
moments that you didn't share,
 
but so many words we share
when we gather, on your birthday,
of how we all loved you, how we love you
still, forever, how we miss you, Dad,
the true head of our houses, still, yet ...

– about cleaning out my father’s car the day after his fatal accident. The weather was very cold and the passenger door was where the gearshift would be. The license plate of the car that ran into his was there too. The glasses he wore were in the right rearmost spot and his watch was in the left rearmost part of the car. The driver seat was broken backward from the force of the accident and his blood was on the backseat where he landed.
