The Wells of Salvation

Waiting to drink
to feel the quenching waters
living waters from the wells of salvation
such a day, waiting for the Lord
for his coming into the world
to save and to bring us home

a calling for a simpler life

in the words of Micah,
the teachings of the savior
calling us to a simpler life
giving away that which we receive
caring more for our neighbors
than our possessions
storing up other treasures
a servant to our brothers, our sisters
walking humbly with our God

Transform Us

Change our lives Lord
transform our troubled hearts
help us turn from the world
a more humble servant help me be

Change me, father God
may I truly give
the blessings you have shown me
in everything I say and do
A good neighbor to the world
a sheep in your heavenly flock

Change me, holy Christ
from the way of this earth
Guide me, your yoke upon my shoulders
let me walk more closely to thee

Change my heart, gentle Spirit
your word upon my lips
May I care for my neighbors,
in how I humbly live

Living that simple life

Our lives full of stress
fighting a race day to day
rats on the treadmill, the maze
trying to find our own way

Turning to human goals
to acquire and to hold
Forgetting the lessons of the Christ
a more humble way to go

Living that simple life
loving God and our fellow man
spending time in the word
lending our helping hand

Trusting in the Lord
His hand will provide
going where we are led
our brother by our side

Competing with our neighbors

So unlike the lesson from our savior
the story of the Samaritan
to be a good neighbor
by the way we treat one another
especially in times of need

Competing with our neighbors
as if their feelings had no weight
our gain upon their backs
what cost of such a game
Seeing them as the enemy
to get over, to walk around
to leave in our dust

Forgetting the message of the Lord
the Samaritan and the Prodigal Son
that we must love one another
and rejoice when the lost one is found

So different than the way of the world
the clawing for things of this earth
how wrong we are to fight
for the things that will turn to dust

Finding security in our stuff

Holding fast to our possessions
finding security in our stuff
these things blocking
the centrality of the Christ

Trusting in our energies
that we may do it all
Our wealth, our gifts
the work of human hands

Setting up humanity
as if we are the beginning the end
forgetting the creator
our trust should be in him

Desiring Possessions

Desiring possessions
a new car in the driveway
the latest, the greatest
the best of everything
Our lives measured, valued
by that which we had
Denying God from the center
the focus of our lives
Cleaving to the temporal
to that which will rust
and return to dust
Forgetting the commandment
to love God the most
and paying an awful cost

Thankful for the Saints

sitting in the pews
nodding to the words of the pastors
thankful for the saints
all who have gone before
those who shared and lived their faith

Walking with us,

Following the master

in the walk of our lives
the saints living with us
truly Christ within our midst

bearing the love of Jesus
an example of grace given

a desire for God

Even in this land of wealth
a nation founded on greed
hungry, feeling a desire for God
a stirring deep in my heart

Wanting a relationship, kinship
to walk with my savior, to sit
at the creator’s feet
to see our neighbors as my brothers
my sisters, part of one family.

A yearning from within
to know and love the Lord
to see the face of God
in everyone I meet

By what we give

Our hearts, our spirits
fed by our sharing
our giving of ourselves
Not by the things of this earth
that rust and turn to dust
but by the love we share
by what we give instead
Follow the path of our master
by his loving word and deed
seeing our neighbors as ourselves
lifting them up when they are in need

through their eyes

not only with their voices
their tongues revealed
the power of Pentecost
the spirit calling us
to speak with their words
in a language they may understand
to see the world
through their eyes
so they may hear
the wondrous message
the gospel real to them
in their hearing and in their sight

note to the Facebook posting,

of the poem, “In Native Tongues”

a new revelation of our Lord

in the sharing, the gospel
through the spirit moving within us,
speaking in words they may understand
in their native tongues
and in the way of our savior
speaking in parables
in words, stories real to them
out of their experience

In doing this, in stepping into their shoes,
speaking with words they may hear
seeing through their eyes
the world revealed anew for us
each of us in the wilderness
out in the world
a new revelation of the Lord

The love we are given

The love we are given
gifts to be given
to be shared with our neighbors
all we meet on this walk
our time on this earth

The gifts we receive, each unique, special
from the creator, the savior
a song, hope in our lives
washing over us, pouring forth
living waters, our cups

Overflowing, joy this morning
in the sanctuary, in worship
in prayer, together
a community sharing
a smile upon each heart

The Finite Stuff of Man

The water, the minerals
our lives but a breath,
the finite stuff of man
gone in an instant
Like the grasses
cut, cast into the fire
nothing permanent in the body of man

More noble stuff
within the spirit
the living essence of our souls
Not bound by the limits of our bodies
life beyond this mortal coil

Like the heavens above us
a canopy of light
Our spirits soaring
at that moment of night

Through the shadow, the valley
our stars rising
leaping up from our vessels of clay
Our spirits joining the heavenly chorus
singing praises
to the one who made us all

The World of the Creator

The cosmic design
the rules, forces, the balance
everything in its place
within the scheme
the eye of the creator
we are formed of the dust of the earth
Waters fill us, the blood and tissue
His breath alone
gives us life
Our days planned, our hairs numbered
long before, the moment of our birth
Dancing on our paths
for the times we each are given
the music stopping
at its appointed hour

God’s Sovereignty, His Presence

At the heart of our worship
in the lessons of the righteous
brought before God
Job’s questions and God’s answers
speaking of our nature
the distance between heaven
and the place of man

Our lives put in perspective
our suffering not to be understood
faith alone, in the wisdom of God
His ways not our own
his truths we must trust
Do not question the Lord
in them lies our sin

All of Our Prayers

A long list spoken
all of our prayers lifted
offered to you by the pastor
at the altar rail
So many prayers
each one so personal
shared by the congregation
in worship today
Offered to the creator
the savior, the spirit
brought forward, raised up
in humble praise
Given for sharing
our neighbors beside us
Raised in the sanctuary
to ease each other’s pain
Continuing our sharing
in conversation after worship
tending the sheep
fellow members of your flock
All of us walking
burdens we carry
Happy to share them
with our family this day

Weights Lifted

In the words he raised
all of our prayers
raised up, offered at your rail
laid at the foot of the cross

Somehow, this morning
Sensing, feeling the weights lifted
the hearts of the believers
my brothers, my sisters

Those in your sanctuary
their hearts unburdened
lightened by the words of prayer
turning our concerns over
to you our father

Trusting in your presence
your loving answers to prayer.
