Not Stopping When I Should Have – v3

Rushing to school,
not late but not early;
Walking purposefully
to make it to the bus on time.

Seeing the flowers
lit when they should not be;
Reflected light
shining down on them.

Wanting to stop
to savor the moment;
The dawn reflected
shining down on them.

But in my rushing
not late but not early;
The moment was gone
when I came back to see them.

The light moved,
the dawn awakening;
The flowers in shadows now
until later in the day.

Restless Souls - v2

The maw of the earth
gaping open, awful
restless souls
not finding people
not a place of rest
trees toppled, scattered.

An open wound
remaining, unstitched
broken stones,
overturned earth
needing mending
so they may rest.

The Stump in the Land

Not utterly forsaken
thought the people were scattered
sent to the winds
away from the promised land

The stump in the Land
the holy presence
not uprooted or burned
never to return
dormant for this season
buried in the ground
to rise in glory

Fleeting Light

The flowers of the morning
rose hyacinth, tulips, daffodils,
narcissus, in the garden
sudden illumined
washed, from a distance
alive in holy light

Fleeting light
reflected for a moment
the sunlight hitting
the windows across the street
refracted, streaming
landing on this piece of earth

Letting them Rest

Even in driving by
feeling the sense of relief
Letting them rest
the dead buried in the ground
covering their graves
A bit more commotion
the sound of the trucks
giving them perpetual care
honoring our dead
