I think I know how the melon feels
After the melon baller,
Empty, a shell,
Nothing left of worth…
 
Ready for the rot pile,
If we are lucky,
A body blow, a sledgehammer,
Nothing left but numb…

that is #Kiwi – v2

a crowd, gathering, standing in her carpeted,
paneled, avocado and flowered wallpaper
1970’s galley kitchen
loud and growing louder
in the spring of 1991.
 
two showers, a large family preparing,
unwrapping the platters, the pans, the bowls,
the memories cascading, the smells,
of our childhoods, our families,
all in one place together.
 
opening my fruit salad, my specialty
layered just so, repeating,
with the hard fruit at the bottom
the acid of grapefruit, oranges, pineapples
to stop the bruising, the browning,
 
sweet fruits, grapes, cherries, melons,
peaches and plums, in season,
berries, rising to the crescendo
a layer of green, dripping with juices
of lemons and limes.
 
an aunt, an eagle eye, cautious,
inquisitive, curious,
approaching the concoction,
wondering at the green slices,
the peeled garnish, placed just so;
 
she asked me what it was, filled with seeds,
“That it Kiwi, from New Zealand,”
something she had never encountered;
so glad I hadn’t added the starfruit,
other more exotic flavors to the mix…

The Layers of Fruit - v2

Bound by the season

the layers of fruit

when I am making the salad

but making it work

Layers to the creation

to get it just right

starting at the bottom

and working to the top

A layer of apples,

of pears, a few kinds

cut up and placed at the bottom

making my base

Citrus coming second

to keep the apples from browning

protecting the fruit below

in their acidity

Next comes the melon,

the cantaloupe, the honeydew

a sweet thick layer

luscious summer fruits

Pineapple then grapes

maybe peaches and plumbs

cut and joining

the confection in the bowl

Berries and cherries,

cut, near the top

not quite finished,

to seal it all in

Lemons and limes

squeezed around the circle

adding just the tartness

that the sweetness needs

Color with kiwi, peeled

but save them aside

adding rich color

to finish the creation

Save in the refrigerator

peel off the lid

the crescendo of smells

in a wonderful bouquet

Dig through the layers

to get a sense of the quilt

each flavor remaining

though wrapped in the juice

The Layers of Fruit

Bound by the season
the layers of fruit
when I am making the salad
