A #Violet Shawl – v6

She sat beside me in our car, silently,
a dark skirt, a white, hand-stitched blouse
with bright Andean characters, terra cotta dolls;
Sunlight poured through our windshield,
causing her violet shawl drink warmth into the wool
radiating color, a singular band of the spectrum,
clear, bright violet, brilliant, alive in that moment,
the outer band of the arc, the bow of God,
living color, wrapped around her shoulders,
to fight against the growing cold.

#Anadama Dough – v2 #snow

Scraping new snow
crystals sparkling
after dropping off the girls
preparing for tomorrow;
Flakes like confectioner’s sugar
maybe sifted flour, powder,
breaking off the slush from the tires
pushing it to the shoulder, the edge.
 
Falling heavy, accumulating,
like too-wet anadama dough
dark and rich with molasses
rolling the snow, building,
The snow-flour sticking,
on the cutting board,
forming little balls, rolls,
ready for the oven,

She was a Bride – v2 #Halloween #Bride #Princess #Ballerina #poem

A tiny Bride, with a veil,
her mother’s when we wed,
White dress, white tights,
black school shoes,
her bouquet left in the car,
her mind on the treats,
this Halloween Night.
 
Her first time walking
to darkened houses, bright lit
ghouls, ghosts, jack-o-lanterns
“Trick or Treat!”, she cried,
and got treats each time;
Her bag grew heavy,
heavier than her sisters’
the Princess and Ballerina.
 
Walking carefully on sidewalks,
front steps, pushing the bell,
waiting patiently for the answer
of the people inside
saying her, “Thank you’s”,
moving on down the street
to the next adventure
on the Night of Treats.

A ribbon of footprints – v2

Their hooves drawing a line,
a ribbon of footprints,
at the edge of the ditches,
banks above the highway
roadways we traveled,
in the frozen north…
 
A ribbon of footprints,
deer of these forests,
drawing a beautiful line,
separating mankind,
from the wild, nature,
forests beyond…

A sea of liquid gold - v2

Looking toward the mountain, westward,
shortly before this day’s sunset
a sea of liquid gold,
Ice almost blinding, shimmering,
overwhelming my sight, this view.
 
A living sea of liquid gold
alive, shining brightly,
Fields off into the distance
bleeding purity of color
the whole world afire, aglow.

So long as there is snow on the Mountain - v3

 So long as there is snow on the Mountain - v3

So long as there is snow on the Mountain

our conversation starter, our lament each springtime

in the in-between time between Winter and Spring;

Never mind the calendar, the date,

the Mountain is in control.

So long as there is snow on the Mountain

there will be wind, cold, disquiet

a slowing of our moving forward;

We will not know Spring

in its fullness, completely.

So long as there is snow on the Mountain

we will struggle in transition

in a lingering of Winter;

We will shiver in our clothing

yearning for Spring.

So long as there is snow on the Mountain

mornings will be remain chilly,

a hint of Winter still present;

We will burst through Spring to Summer

as the Mountain releases its grip.
