planted in our souls...
 
needing light, love,
hope, disinfectant,
letting air into

only in transparency,
in being brutally honest...

We have become complicit,
complacent in our silence
The evil of these predators
has remained unchecked...
The justice that is required
has been sealed in files...
Silence of the victims, sorrow,
has been purchased with blood...
 
Evil is endemic, pervasive,
Satans are walking with us...
Victims numb with secrets...
a New Babylon, perversion,
depraved indifference, evil,
gathering power, prestige,
abusing children, destroying
all for their satanic lust...
 
They live by the flesh, desires
immoral, not fearing judgment,
oligarchs, the wealthy, politicians,
cloaked in our culture
where all sins are hidden...
silence of the files, agreements,
the cruelty of their power -
immune to justice...
 
A cult of depravity, pervasive,
poison within our body
metastasized and growing
no reconning, no trials,
hidden in the files,
allowed for a season...
The corruption of our culture
is on vivid display...
 
God, in His timing,
will stop this stain, this violence,
The powerful exposed as evil,
God, in His timing,
will mete out justice.
Their evil is being revealed
before the harsh culling...

a blizzard, a torrent, a burning brushfire...

When the evidence is finally leaked,
only a trickle at this moment,
multiple sources, multiple files,
multiple revenge motives…
 
A blizzard, a torrent, a burning brushfire…
like the scandals before them
the truth will come out, destroying,
everything burned in its wake…
 
Suddenly, the flood gate will be released,
Pandora’s Box will be wide open,
the secrets they so long have guarded
will be brought into the light…
 
No longer hidden, names of the powerful,
brought low by their secrets, their crimes,
their deviance, these pedophiles,
will be brought to the ground…

the anger I carried – v2

the anger I carried with me
the smile that I lost that day
the abuse I suffered by his hand
that I buried so deep…
 
shame though it wasn’t mine
when he touched me as he did that day
a stranger I didn’t know
but a weight I carried…
 
silent too many years, hiding,
my life changed forever, suddenly,
not trusting for so long
scars upon my soul…
 
the anger I carried with me
the smile I lost that day
now an epiphany of redemption
my home in paradise…

the anger I carried

Family Secrets – Revised – v6

Little and big secrets, hidden,
silence, … not sharing, not honest,
words, stories not spoken,
from shame, for protection, maybe;
Blank spots, missing pieces, broken,
in the telling, retelling, the spaces,
unspoken, of our family’s history…
 
Carved off areas, blank spaces,
sometimes casually shared later
as if we knew, … forgetting the secrets,
the silence, the missing words
in real-time, in our living;
Names crossed from address books
pain pushed down, hidden…
 
Missing memories, omissions,
scraps of childhood, painful,
undiscussed, unspoken, silent,
in the fog of our history;
Moments casually blurted out
when there was no warning, no memory,
forgetting, … that the secrets were spoken…

The piece that caught my attention was the statements about God placing hands on the side of the boy’s heart while being sexually abused.
Unlike the story of the fiery furnace in Daniel 3:1-30, where Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had no smell of smoke on them, victims of sexual abuse do have the smell of the smoke of that evil upon them, even as God was with them in the fire.

after Skype conversation with a High School class from North Carolina
 
I wrote it in 2001 (or 2000), and edited it in June 2004.
 
One of the things about the family secrets that led to this poem was a casual statement by mother about 1995, when I was 35 years old, I think it was either Thanksgiving or Christmas, that my father's brother had committed suicide about 6 months after his wife and my grandmother died in 1973. It was sort of surreal how it was stated. I was only 13 at that time in 1973. She just said like all of us had always known that. None of my sisters or brothers had ever heard that before either.
 
Another aspect was that, in 1976 when I was 16 years old, I was doing genealogy research and I discovered that my paternal grandfather who was born in 1888, had grown up in an orphanage and that he had been adopted as an adult in 1913 by the founder of the orphanage. I asked my father about it (he was 44 at the time) and he was totally surprised by this revelation. As far as I know he never asked his father about that.
 
Also, in 1973, the same year my grandmother died, I was touched inappropriately by a stranger on a bike path between my house and the bottle dump where I liked to go digging. It was over 25 years before I mentioned it to anyone.

Co-parenting with her rapist – v4

Her nightmare unending, each word triggering,
his smirk, his facial expressions a dagger, a threat,
her constant pain, PTSD, violence remembered,
co-parenting with her rapist…
 
Afraid of the father of her unwanted child,
but bound to him by law, process, procedures,
mandated by the State, the oppressor,
trying to remain the Friendly Parent…
 
Knowing all too well his manipulation, amygdala hijack,
the Law’s bias, the pushing, being backed into a corner,
seeking only to love, to raise her children
behind her tears, her brave face…
 
Confined within the strictures, the structure, the laws,
forced to be bound at the hip, co-parenting,
with the Beast at the other table,
his power, his anger which she hates…

She stood before the camera – v2

Regaining her composure an effort,
but not shrinking from the camera,
Chronicler, the Voyeur,
Silent but soon to speak,
preparing, getting herself ready
a flaring of her nostrils,
quick motion brushing,
tears that would not be silenced,
resolve in the face of this woman,
like so many clients I have known…
 
After the latest attack,
his hands upon her,
her video starting in silence,
pulling herself together
to recorder her manifesto
not shrinking from the camera,
it was her partner, her voice,
her silent witness to her resolve,
that she would rise from the ashes,
that she and her children would be safe…
 
We need to honor her spirit,
to stand with her in this moment,
to acknowledge the hope within her,
giving her time,
standing resolute,
even amid her pain,
standing her ground,
staring into the camera
regaining power somehow
when she was ready to speak...

Like a Phoenix – v2

Lost, in our miry clay
the ashes, the dust of our sin,
trapped in situations, lack of trust,
harmed by those who should love,
neglected, abused, mistreated,
pulled this way and that,
hurt deepest by family, by blood
now we are set apart…
 
Oh, let this be a time of healing,
of walking anew, with You,
let God rest hands upon you,
lifting you up, flying,
like a phoenix, alight,
from the fire, the ashes,
rising in love, to new heights,
new hope, in arms of Love…

Co-parenting with her rapist - v3

Her nightmare unending, each word triggering,
his smirk, his facial expressions a dagger,
her constant pain, PTSD, violence remembered,
co-parenting with her rapist.
 
Afraid of the father of her unwanted child,
but bound to him by law, process, procedures,
mandated by the state, the oppressor,
trying to remain the friendly parent.
 
Knowing all too well his manipulation,
the law’s bias, the pushing, being backed into a corner,
seeking only to love, to raise her children
behind her tears, her brave face.
 
Confined within the strictures, the structure, the laws,
forced to be bound at the hip, co-parenting,
with the Beast at the other table,
his anger which she hates.
