they couldn’t, cannot leave,
their hearts wouldn’t, won’t let them
this land that they love
this place of their essence...
 
brave people under constant attack
but choosing to stay anyway,
unwilling to leave their homes
while living in an active war zone...
 
children of the land, of Kherson,
planted in her rich black soil,
staying when others have departed
seeking to feed the world...
 
a choice to stay, to serve,
to grow the crops they love,
under the threat of death, terror,
on the land they know so well...
 
We must stand with these people...
We must support them in this struggle...
Each of them needs to be lifted up
but not just in our prayers...
 
the world needs to wake up
to the truth of daily terror
too long have they suffered alone
on the land which they love...

but choosing to stay anyway

The world is shocked
by the carnage in this video
the savagery in this moment;
but this is repeated daily,
hourly, for many years...
 
Wanton murder, torment,
young men of Russia in Kherson,
staring at their flickering screens
guiding their FPV drones
to destroy civilian targets...
 
Precise action,
nothing random,
hunting humans –
No value in war,
just cruel, awful, death...
 
They call this “Human safari” -
a bland term truly;
but it describes cruelty,
death for money, for sport...
 
These Russian soldiers
are Dead Souls only
that Gogol wrote about;
They are bereft of life,
taking human life...
 
Cruel subhumans
(if only they were robots)
staring at their screens -
posting videos -
Their acts of genocide...

extremely personal, direct...
Nothing is “indiscriminate”,
the strikes, the chaos are
no accident, just pure evil,
FPV drones hunting, stalking,
Human safaris, genocide -
Double-tap attacks on responders...
civilian targets, the elderly,
innocent children in the crosshairs,
on their flickering drone screens…
 
Ukraine is in the crosshairs
of the savagery of Russia,
The Conscience of Dead Souls,
of cruel naked aggression…
Kherson is in the grip,
of relentless bombardment,
its people tormented,
hiding from drones...
A frontline of terror
a land exposed to genocide,
with no end in sight…
 
Russia’s war crimes,
mounting daily, hourly,
crimes against humanity,
for more than a decade,
Russia’s war of attrition
where human life means nothing,
even their meat assaults,
destroying their own lives…
Cruelty at all costs…
They must be stopped,
They must be defeated…

running from his pew, his seat,
on legs so tiny, so small,
Falling before at Your altar,
Falling at Your throne, oh Lord...
not looking for attention
but convicted, Father,
Singing Your praises,
The glory of Your name...
 
He fell to his knees,
in submission, modeled,
by his elders, his family...
He came forward running,
with reckless abandon, falling,
knowing You alone are worthy
of our worship and praise,

A prayer written on the pavement in Russian,
Дети, Children! Діти. A plea, a word,
a shout of protection over them, a sanctuary,
believing still that they would be safe,
hiding in their makeshift shelter.
But we should have known our enemy,
the choice they made that day -
to butcher the innocents…
 
This moment of pure depravity, діти,
(now repeated) premeditated murder,
Seared in our memory, but numbed…
The horror becomes too frequent…
That should have been all we needed, Дети,
for every nation-state to act, to support them,
Evil, they released that awful day in the theater
their refuge, their hiding place for children…
 
On the four-year anniversary of terror, Дети,
Cancer hospitals, apartment buildings, and children
targeted by Russia’s FPV drones, human safaris,
targeting one-year-olds on the street in Kherson,
daily attacks, the same evil, the same enemy.
But we remain complicit, appeasement, діти,
We draw red lines for us not to cross,
never fully Standing with Ukraine…
 
That one act of terror, war crimes, діти,
the inhumanity of Russia, of Putin,
Unrelenting terror, more than mere war,
crimes against humanity, innocent children,
on the hiding place of women and children,
bombing their seemingly safe refuge, Дети!
innocent blood taken that day, in genocide,
and yet we have remained silent…
 
Four years ago today, normalized terror,
But then we watched in shock,
Only a month into the invasion, then,
We learned the truth about Russia,
We should have acted long ago
We should have stood with Ukraine…
Crying, “Дети!”, діти! was not enough
to save the innocent children…

March 16, 2022 – Bombing of Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre in Mariupol
Note: Дети is a Russian word, and діти is a Ukrainian word. I included both, because the sign on the ground in front of the Theatre was Russian but the cost was Ukraine’s children. I purposely used Russian, Ukrainian, and English to multiply the pain of that horrible day 4 years ago today in the poem. Many Ukrainians may not like the inclusion of the Russian word, but I pray they understand I included it to reference back to Russia’s inhumanity in attacking children in the sanctuary of the Theatre.

Written on the pavement in Russian,

Дети, Children! Діти. A prayer, a word,

a shout of protection over them, sanctuary,

believing they would be safe, 

hiding in their makeshift shelter;

But we should have known our enemy,

the choice they made that day

to butcher the innocents…

This moment of pure depravity, діти,

now regular premeditated murder,

Seared in our memory, but numbed…

The horror become too frequent…

That should have been all we needed, Дети,

for every nation-state to act, to support them,

Evil they loosed that awful day on the theater

their refuge, their hiding place for children…

More than three years later, terror, Дети,

Cancer hospitals, apartment buildings, children

targeted by Russia’s FPV drones, human safaris,

targeting one year olds in Kherson,

daily attacks, the same evil, the same enemy;

But we remain complicit, appeasement, діти,

We draw red lines not to cross,

never fully Standing With Ukraine…

That one act of terror, war crimes, діти,

the inhumanity of Russia, of Putin,

Unrelenting terror, more than mere war,

crimes against humanity, innocent children,

on the hiding place of women and children,

bombing their seemingly safe refuge, Дети!

innocent blood taken that day, in genocide,

and yet we have remained silent…

So long ago now, normalized terror,

But then we watched in shock,

Only a month into the invasion, then,

We learned the truth about Russia,

We should have acted long ago

We should have stood with Ukraine…

Crying, “Дети!”, діти! was not enough

to save the innocent children…

Note: Дети is a Russian word, and діти is a Ukrainian word. I included both, because the sign on the ground in front of the Theatre was Russian but the cost was Ukraine’s children. I purposely used Russian, Ukrainian, and English to multiply the pain of that horrible day 4 years ago today in the poem. Many Ukrainians may not like the inclusion of the Russian word, but I pray they understand I included it to reference back to Russia’s inhumanity in attacking children in the sanctuary of the Theatre.

We have become complicit,
complacent in our silence
The evil of these predators
has remained unchecked...
The justice that is required
has been sealed in files...
Silence of the victims, sorrow,
has been purchased with blood...
 
Evil is endemic, pervasive,
Satans are walking with us...
Victims numb with secrets...
a New Babylon, perversion,
depraved indifference, evil,
gathering power, prestige,
abusing children, destroying
all for their satanic lust...
 
They live by the flesh, desires
immoral, not fearing judgment,
oligarchs, the wealthy, politicians,
cloaked in our culture
where all sins are hidden...
silence of the files, agreements,
the cruelty of their power -
immune to justice...
 
A cult of depravity, pervasive,
poison within our body
metastasized and growing
no reconning, no trials,
hidden in the files,
allowed for a season...
The corruption of our culture
is on vivid display...
 
God, in His timing,
will stop this stain, this violence,
The powerful exposed as evil,
God, in His timing,
will mete out justice.
Their evil is being revealed
before the harsh culling...

for their satanic lust.
 
They live by the flesh,
immoral, not fearing,
the cruelty of power -
immune to justice.
 
A cult of depravity
is allowed for a season.
The Corruption of Culture
is on vivid display.
 
God, in His timing,
will mete out justice.
Their evil is being revealed
before the harsh culling.
