Find a seat in the back, be humble - The Parable of the Guests

Do not think too much of yourself,
Exalting yourself before others,
Grabbing the first seat at the table,
Claiming your station, your rightful place,
So that you may shine before your fellow man,
When you have not been assigned a seat,
When you have been invited to the banquet.

Watch your step, choose your spot,
Find a seat in the back, be humble,
Be the last, the servant, the other,
Do not worry about your position,
Let your light shine before God only,
Let Him choose your seat at the table,
The Bridegroom at the wedding banquet.

For the One who matters is the Bridegroom,
Our risen Lord and Savior, His promised return,
How He finds us seated at the wedding banquet,
Whether we have sought reward on earth,
Or if we have been the servant, humble.
This is what matters, what counts in heaven,
So, be careful, choose your seat wisely…

we must be their neighbor

we must be their neighbor
their good neighbor, loving,
even the stranger, the other
offering them love, compassion
seeking to be the balm, the oil,
their comfort, their hope
the way of God, of love
their faith, their peace
in their time of struggle
hurting, broken, bleeding,
while they are out in the world

Balancing Worship – revised – v4

To love Jesus, fully,
to really love His ministry, His message
We need to see him, as he was,
as he was seen in the world
in His travels in the land.
To see him as homeless,
wandering untethered,
outside the law, as He was,
claiming deity, fulfillment.
Speaking in paradox, in parables
Messianic and servant
pauper and King,
Christ claiming
His holy name.

To see him as holy, divine,
to see him as man, as a carpenter,
as teacher, as prophet,
to see Christ as God.
Complicated beyond our comprehension,
human as the moment in Temple,
tipping the tables of the money-changers,
the moments, the many times.
Reflection, centering, time away,
up on the mountain, by the sea,
communing with God

To worship our brother, our Savior, our King
we must spent time with him,
in Christ’s service
being His hands, His feet,
His pen, writing His words,
to be His voice, in the world,
in the marketplace of ideas.
Spreading justice, His message, His love
reaching out to our brothers, our sisters,
all around this earth.
All of us struggling, hoping
longing for the day, that glorious day
of His coming again.
