the smell of the earth

the smell of the earth
wet leaves before winter
the thickness of the pile
yet giving to my touch
raking the leaves,
the remnant of autumn,
before the first snowfall
after Thanksgiving was done

Smell of Autumn – v5

Another smell of autumn
of the harvest
sweet sweet smell
of Concord grapes
warming ripening
ready to burst with flavor
strong urgent smell
lured me closer

Spreading outward
from the makeshift arbor
a plume twenty feet wide
enticing, coaxing
me to linger
luxuriate in its aroma
smile at the memory
of other pickings

Long ago, I remember
Sweet fruit
high above me,
out of reach
up in the canopy
formed by wire and bush
worth the effort,
tart, sweet nectar
dripping over my chapped cheek

Tart to the taste – v2

The ripe apples. McIntosh,
fresh from the orchard
the smell of the rotten fruit
only making it sweeter
snapping in my mouth,
almost breaking my teeth,
the fresh juice, dripping down my beard,
so tart to the taste, pucker,
hungry for the sharp cheddar
pungent aroma, earthy
clashing and complementing
alive with rich fragrance
joining together, melding
a symphony on my palate
fresh in this season
