Teach me to love

logs in my eyes, blindness,
cataracts on my spirit
filtering every moment
through the lens of my pain…
 
fearful, angry, defensive
jumping to the wrong conclusions
assuming the worst in everyone,
in fear, running away…
 
a scarcity mindset,
denying God’s abundance
every gift of the Creator
poured within my heart…
 
logs in my eyes, cataracts
blinding my vision,
seeing God’s love dimly
in a mirror cracked…
 
Free my flawed vision
open my eyes, oh Lord,
the wonder of creation
so I my love You, oh God…

Jesus proclaimed He was the Christ,
the Messiah sent from heaven.
 
Jesus claimed His name,
the only Son of the Father,
the One foretold in scripture,
the One who was to descend.

His power, His authority,
was in His holy name.

the first-born of creation,

Christ’s words in His sermon,
His first pastoral teaching,
on the mount, preaching,
with authority, with power…
 
Christ gave us no choice,
in the words of His message,
His power, His authority,
was in His identity alone…
 
Christ spoke with power,
authority from heaven,
for He is the Christ, the Messiah,
the one living Son of God…
 
Christ gave us no choice,
to see Him as a moral teacher,
a preacher, a messenger,
speaking God’s truth…
 
No, Christ spoke differently,
than all others before Him,
He claimed His authority,
was rooted in scripture,
in His holy name…

Where is your grace,
your sense of forgiveness,
do you forget the grace God
has been poured out on you…
 
Where is your grace
when you judge a neighbor,
when you call out the speck
in another’s eye…
 
Where is your grace,
your compassion, in your spirit,
do you not recognize the fault
that you too carry inside…
 
Where is your grace
for each sister, each brother,
judging them harshly,
as if you are in the right…

Your sense of forgiveness

a rock aside your head,
If you are merciless,

Be humble, more merciful,
communicating with your neighbor,
Be careful how you judge,
how you discriminate,
Because you will be judged
by the same measure,
Your words will be a cudgel,
a rock aside your head,
If you are merciless,
if you find great fault…

Do we trust,
Do we believe,
Do we have faith?
 
Are we persistent,
Do we keep asking,
Do we keep praying,
Do we keep seeking,
Do we keep knocking,
Raising petitions to God?
 
Do we trust,
Do we believe,
Do we have faith?
 
Do we have faith God will answer
fervent prayers of our hearts;
Do we believe God is good,
that our God is truly faithful;
Do we believe God is righteous,
Do we believe our God is just?

Not one and done,
the calling of Jesus,
We are to ask, to seek, to knock,
on our faith journey.
 
Keep on asking,
Keep on seeking,
Keep on knocking,
striving in God’s love.
 
The questions you are asking,
The answers you are seeking,
The doors you want opened,
Will come in God’s time
 
Keep on asking,
