The breath, the spirit of God
living within us,
while the clay, the earth, has life
Created by the hands of the potter
from the dust so shall we return
our bodies, merely the temple
the place within which the spirit lives
But it is that spirit that matters
that makes us more than the earth
the thing returning to heaven
when we have our spiritual,
our eternal birth

Our Spirits Eternal
Within the mortal shell
our earthly home
our spirits eternal
breath of God within us
giving us, like Adam, life
Returning to God
a bit of ourselves eternal
part of His heavenly realm

Awakening
an awakening, a dawning
an awareness, epiphany
the Christ, his lessons
leading us home to our king
seeing our neighbors,
brothers and sisters
part of the family, fellow sheep
following the call of the shepherd
answering him, knowing his voice
each of us lost, needing
to find our way home
guided by our brother
home to the open arms
our father waiting

Christ the King
Christ the King
the ruler eternal
following the line of David
promised by God
Entering in, his gates,
his throne room
gathering in all of his sheep
known to him
Each of us humbly
bowing before him
our brother, our savior,
our shepherd, our king
Christ’s rule eternal
over all the kings of the earth

the advent before us

Faithfully
Like your example,
while you walked the earth
faithfully following the will of the father
humbly submitting to your holy purpose
that we could live like you as well
Doing the work of the kingdom
sent as you were sent
to teach, to heal
to speak when we ought
justice, righteousness our creed

No Other Priest, No Other King
Like no other priest, no other king
Christ walking, with us on the earth
ancient, immortal, in heaven he reigns
before Pilate answering his questions
his identity made known
On the earth a servant, following the master
humbly submitting to the will of the father
going as a mortal to the base of the cross
A priest, like no other,
climbing the cross, a sacrifice
for one time and for all
an offering of love
our sins washed away

The Spirit Within
Within our shells,
the mortal frame
within which the spirit lives
the hand, the breath
the living God
dwelling within us still
Ever, since the beginning of time
Man made in the image of God
a piece of eternity come down to earth
beating within our hearts
The breath, the quickening of life
from the creator alone
from the clay, the dust
we were formed
and our bodies will return,
yet the spirit will call us home

A White Gate
from the road, the bright white gate
at the back of the field, nothing visible beyond
in the new light
after the rains of earlier this day
held to the graying post,
hanging on the hinges, the wires;
off in the distance
dividing what we do not know
lying beyond the white bright gate

The curl of the ribbon
leaves of the reeds, the grasses
paint peeling on the wet clapboards
like the curl of the flat ribbon
pulled by the blade of scissors
wrapping a package in gold
moving in the autumn breeze
bathed in a puddle of light
grasses above the maple leaves
calling my eyes, in delight

Wet Autumn Wood
white pine, oak, birch in the forest
the leaves of the oak tree
covering the ground
driving from the school
returning homeward
wanting to stop and linger in the pine trees
wet autumn wood
calling me back
so many memories
of moments in wonder
walking, finding, treasures exposed
without the leaves, the foliage of summer
little pearls to discover
out in the wet autumn wood

Primrose Berries
above the bramble

wet, morning, brilliant
the cranberry, the color
drawing my eyes

On the Wings of the Gossamer Wind
the fog rising from the skin of the lake
joining my breath, visible, glinting
in the early fall morning light
melding, joining, dancing
on the wings of the gossamer wind
as if pulled by a string
my canoe drawing me through
my camera, my coffee, steaming still
nestled in the blaze orange life jacket
in the bottom, by my bare feet
a great blue heron
coming into view, around the point
flies skipping upon the water
beads of ripples, touching down
the loon’s dive audible, piercing the water
echoing across the quiet of the morn’
in the stillness of autumn
alone on the lake again

In Thankful Rest
Our hearts overflowing
our trust in the Lord
his providing
is what we have stored
in our spirits
knowing his provision
all that we need
comes from the king
Let go of our possessions
the things of this earth
enter in worship
for the savior’s coming birth

In Thankfulness
Entering into
In the season of waiting
expectantly celebrating
the coming of the Christ child
pausing, in thankfulness
in the providing of the creator
a bounty, a harvest
a table to share
His comfort, his protection
watching over us
We need not rely on ourselves
Christ’s saving sacrifice
God’s grace in sending him
to save us from sin
while we were yet in that state
Thankful, our cups running over
in the present day
not some future of which we dream

Shadows of Gossamer Down
In the early morning
after the girls were safe at school
the sun rising slowing
over the autumn morn’
The bloom of milkweed pod seeds,
shadows of gossamer down
upon the garage wall

Buy Less
The seduction of the season
Christmas time of year
ads on the TV, calling us to spend less
that is true, but that misses the point
the lesson in the scripture
Buying more, accumulating, gathering in
these are the things that the Christ child
told was the sin, the storing up the evil
when others are in need
Affluence, abundance,
our cups overflowing
these are charges to keep,
to care for our neighbors
not to hoard and to keep,
the things of this earth
To trust in the creator,
the sustainer, provider is he
Less buying, consumption
that others may have enough
giving of ourselves
servants to our fellow man
following the example of the king
giving all we have
Not storing up, giving away instead
following the way of love
lending a helping hand

In God Shall We Rest
Our thanks, our praise
in God shall we rest;
storing up in heaven
not worried about our days
here on earth below
Trusting in God, he shall provide
not trusting in ourselves
the work of our human hands
His gifts, his protection,
God’s grace sufficient
Peace of mind, our spirits soar,
believing in our shepherd
walking with us beside us
on the dusty roads of the earth
until our heavenly rebirth

In Sabbath Rest
At our core, in our hearts
our actions, our worries
telling the truth of our faith
in sabbath rest
coming into your presence
oh Lord, not just one day of the week
trusting in you, in your provision
in your protection, your care
all the days of our lives
Like the psalmist,
in writing of you, our shepherd
not like the rich man
trusting in himself alone

Our Cups Overflowing
Not our barns, our silos;
our cups overflowing
with the bounty, the gifts of the Lord
God’s provision more than enough
an abundance of grace to share instead
Our cupboards should be empty
our hearts bursting, full
in lives we are able to touch
God’s provision more than enough
our neighbors’ needs to fulfill
God’s bounty and care
heaped on us to share our happiness
Like the psalmist of old
we have a story to tell
of God still walking by our side
mercy and goodness
pouring on our hearts
that we may bless others in turn

Faith like the Psalmist
unlike the rich man
who trusted in himself
his ability to store for a rainy day
gathering in things of this earth
hoarding when he should give
faith like the psalmist
trusting in God
in his provision, his care, his guide
walking with God all of his days
his leading to the other side

Overflowing
Our cup overflowing
God will provide
our shepherd, our protector be
no need to gathering in
our call to give instead
Trust in the Lord
his way our one
his life our model revealed
not to go to the rugged cross
but to submit to the master indeed
To lean on the creator
to believe in his care
in this is our lesson clear
Storing in heaven
not on this earth
other lives richer
by our loving care and word

Eyes of the Psalmist
The rich man blind, unable to see
the world through the eyes of the psalmist
trusting instead the things of the earth
his prestige, his wealth, his possessions alone
Holding onto when he should give
gathering in things of the world
His storehouses bursting while others have need
showing no kindness in word or deed
The commandments clear, from the Lord
his intention revealed
the trust of the psalmist
what we should believe
giving when we see others in need
Setting himself up as if he were God
trusting in his hands to provide
empty those hands before the Lord
when his life is done

Believing the Psalmist
In his heart of hearts
the holy of holies of his soul
he did not trust the Lord;
in himself alone
Gathering in, ever more
when he should be sharing his wealth;
believing the psalmist,
he would have had no fear no dread
The abundance not of his hands
the work, the gift of God
faithfulness is all he demands
something the rich man could not give
Unable to see the world
his place on this earth
through the eyes of
the psalmist or the Christ
counting on himself instead

Gathered for a Future
His barns, his cupboard
his house bulging, bursting
more than enough, what he needed
Gathered for a future
but never satisfied
his possessions ruling
his heart, his soul and mind
Consuming his vision
his focus on this earth
nothing to show the Lord,
an accounting for heavenly birth

Gathering for a Future
Gathering for a future
as if the present is not good enough
wanting more but ignoring what there is now
His focus on the future, an illusion only
gathering in, when he should give away
His selfishness, self-centeredness, exposed
ripped naked, when God came to his door
Calling him to the threshold
from this life to the next
the book of life empty
of his giving, kindness
All he had stored up
all merely gathered in
ready for a future
that never came to be

The Assurance of God
The assurance of God
contentment sublime
all contained in these psalm of old
So much we forget
of his faithfulness yet
his steadfast love
endures for all time
The rich man in the story
the tale of our age
all seeing assurance
in the things of this earth
Our hand is not enough
our sweat will ever fail us
Trust alone in the Lord
he is our source and our strength
Our cup runneth over
goodness and mercy pursuing us
beside us, with us, his spirit
with us, all of our days
His is our shepherd,
in him we can trust
laying down our cares, our worries
knowing he will provide
Focus instead on serving our neighbor
lifting up the last, the least, the lost
sharing the good news

A Crystalline Forest
Tiny, needing a different perspective
changing my angle, my point of view
awakening senses, seeing more closely
A thick forest of white, layer upon layer
the frost on the white board of the fence
before the still quiet school

The Layers of God
God’s wisdom
God’s nature
layered, nuanced
revealed slowing, patiently
as we study his word
listening for the song of God
his spirit singing within us
slowly, slowly adding the layers
until we can see God face to face

Confronting the Giant
standing when we should
the world in the breach
confronting the giant
with our lives
much that we can teach
the lessons of David that day
defiant before that man
trusting in the Lord
to ever guard his way
courageous before the giant on the field
with stones and sling in his hand
believing God would protect him
righteous, he did not yield
rising to the challenges of our land
the focus on things that will rust
going into the world to heal
like David, taking a stand
telling the rich man, even ourselves
that the way to heaven divine
is not the amount in our barns
or on our cupboard shelves
true abundance, happiness
in this troubled world
and in the world to come
measured with love instead

His Mercy
God’s mercy
perfect surrender
in the act of the son
taking on our judgment
so we would be spared
our lives forgiven
our way made straight
His mercy taking our lash
our pain, dying so that we may live
to walk with God again

As a servant alone
Christ, choosing to submit
to relinquish his heavenly throne
coming to earth, living
as a servant alone
Giving up his independence
by choosing to follow the master
giving us a give beyond measure
when God became a man
Remembering the one who sent him
onto this mortal coil
walking the way of a servant
at the master’s command alone

Out of Christ’s Love
Honest words, with power
calling him up short
testing his mettle, his faith
Words of love, out of the savior’s heart
speaking truth to the rich man that day
the real work of a disciple
one worthy of the name
to sell, to give away
before he could
follow the way

Satisfied, Contented
Wondering for a moment
the opposite of our current,
our driven world, what it would be like to be
satisfied, contented with what we have now
Happy, peaceful, in our present reality
giving freely from out of our excess
offering hope to those who are needy
knowing that God will provide
an abundance of gifts
Grace from our master
our savior, sustainer
Living water, bread
all that we need
Humbly praying
a prayer for our healing
turning from the world
and the seduction of wealth
Changing our hearts
focused on the Christ child
remembering what was given
in his holy birth
Our savior choosing
to come to this human world
to walk a road
that led to the cross
Offering us a glimpse
the love of the father
willing to sacrifice all
that we would have eternal birth

With his eyes seeing
awakening his slumber
the pain of his suffering
seeing the world, with eyes open to God
his sacrifice, his love shining
in the vision before him
able to see the world
as if for the first time
seeing sin from the
perspective of a father
grasping his mercy,
his love for us all
Choosing, as Christ did
the way of the cross
wanting no child
to bear such a terrible cost
