Holy Water - v6

The divine was revealed

made clean, prepared, anointed,

not with a golden crown;

but with water,

not in the Temple

but there in the Jordan,

in the wilderness

in the water with John.

Submitting to an act of trust,

a falling into the water

a washing away of our sin

in supplication and fulfillment

to begin His own journey,

His three years of ministry,

His mission, His fate, Jesus,

our risen Lord and Savior.

God is at work in you

second by second

in each breath, in each choice

in every thought gifted to you

God is at work in you

minute by minute, moving,

the seeds that were planted

growing within your spirit

God is at work in you

in lifetimes, in journeys

in the words of holy scripture

planted in your life

God is at work in you

forever, always, moving,

seeking to change you

to perfect you in God’s love

Baptismal Waters – v5

Two pitchers, two bowls of water

Two pair of hands - of the pastor

and the Roman Proconsul

Markers of a life well spent

the Lamb, the King of the Jews

the representative of Caesar

Water poured ritually

from pitcher to bowl

hear it clatter and splash

Close your eyes,

feel the liquid on your skin

as you are preacher or Pilate

One dips His hands into living water

rests them on His head

in blessing, a sacrament

The other cups His hands in the deep

washes His hands of Him, their sin,

giving the Son over to the mob,

in verdict and fulfillment

Baptismal Waters – v4

Two pitchers, two bowls

Two pair of hands

of the pastor and the proconsul,

metaphorical markers of a life well spent

Water poured ritually

from pitcher to bowl

hear it clatter and swirl

in anointment or judgment

Close your eyes,

feel the liquid on your skin

in and on your cupped hands

as you are preacher or Pilate

One dips his hands

into the living water

rests them on His head

a sacrament, in blessing

Pilate cups his hands in the deep

washes his hands of Jesus

giving the Son over to the mob,

in verdict and fulfillment
