Two
pitchers, two bowls
Two
pair of hands
of
the pastor and the proconsul,
metaphorical
markers of a life well spent
Water
poured ritually
from
pitcher to bowl
hear
it clatter and swirl
in
anointment or judgment
Close
your eyes,
feel
the liquid on your skin
in
and on your cupped hands
as
you are preacher or Pilate
One
dips his hands
into
the living water
rests
them on His head
a
sacrament, in blessing
Pilate
cups his hands in the deep
washes
his hands of Jesus
giving
the Son over to the mob,
in
verdict and fulfillment
