We are not Christian

We are not Christian
not following his path
not following their example
separated from one another
striving to gain
whatever the cost
climbing over our neighbor
that we may be first

Forgetting the words
how the first disciples lived
reading, sharing,
together in prayer
eating as one
one body, family
focused on the Savior
our brother, the Christ
following in the way of the cross

Capitalism is not Christian

The most for our shareholders
profit at all cost
standing on our neighbors
not caring for the outcomes
the pain in other places
only focused on
lining our own pockets

Capitalism is not Christian
taking, gathering
wealth for its own sake
maximizing for ourselves
silos full, standing on our neighbors
the garden polluted, raped
plundered for profit

Living like the first Christians

Living together
sharing with one another
spending time in loving
caring for our neighbor
raising up concerns
sharing together
meals, our wealth
standing together

The protestors speaking out
standing for their neighbors
their sisters and brothers
pooling together resources, meals
more like the first Christians
than those who claim His name
turning their backs on their neighbors
those crying out in pain

If we had been Christian

If we had been Christian
would it have come to this
would we be so divided
the have and have nots

If we had read the scripture
if we had followed their path
truly loving our neighbors
as we love ourselves

Would wealth be divided
gathered alone
would the silos be full
when others have none

If we had been Christian
would it have come to this
some with plenty
some just trying to live

Not a Christian nation

The debates of the moment
the class warfare
as if this is new
something different
not a Christian nation
not following his example
one life together,
all things shared
serving one another
as they had need
not taking for our own selves
not motivated by greed

If we had been faithful

If we had been faithful
from the first believers
continuing their practice,
sharing all together
as had Christ
the first twelve
the apostles that follow
to each as they had need

All of the wealth
all property
given together
none held back

If we had been faithful
from the beginning
what would this world be
how would it look
would we need the state
would we know want
would greed be stalking
the face of the earth

If we followed their example

If we lived as they did
when Jesus lived
all things in common
all that they did
if we followed their example
offering ourselves
holding nothing back
that all may live
focused on our Savior
the teachings of Christ
eating, praying
living together as one

From the Common Purse

Christ and the twelve
the apostles after
giving all they had
sharing together
a life, communion
in concert, together
as one people
living together
from the common purse
from the offering
all needs were met
all were fed
study and prayer
caring for their neighbors
the nascent church
from the common purse

As Christ had done

Gathering all together
as Christ had done
all of their possessions
together as one

Proof in the betrayal
Judas stealing from the common purse;
the apostles who followed
following the example of Christ

All in Common

The first believers
living together
All of their treasure
their days, their communion
Sharing together
the life of the gospel
All in common
nothing held back
Sharing together
that all would be fed
All in common
together in Christ

taught for a purpose

Everything in Common

gathered together
the concept of property
everything in common
nothing kept for themselves
trusting in the Lord
Living together
one people, one life
sharing with each other
out of one purse
all of their treasure collected
given to the Lord
shared as each one needed
none kept in reserve

the common meal
sharing one life together

A perfume of autumn

Beside the way
hanging on the fencing
rich in their dying
the grapes heavy on the vine
Left from other planters
long ago abandoned
a bit of the wild
in the urban setting
between the two businesses
oblivious to the blessing
left for wild creatures
to reap the fall bounty,
a perfume of autumn

In the sweetness of their dying

The trees giving up their bounty
the rich colors falling
in the sweetness of their dying
the richness of each season
falling from the branches
littering, a carpet
woven with wondrous colors
before the blanket of snow

Fragrance of their colors

pungent, sweet, decay
giving up their color,
deep, rich aroma
maples leaves fallen
almost like ripe tomatoes
their colors dripping
giving off fragrance
in the wet fall morning
offering up for our pleasure
in this appointed season;
a whisper of the springtime
of our planting in the soil

How I wish I could shout – v2

Christ’s words, harsh words
stark distinction
We are of the world
He is of the skies
so different than you and me
of the Spirit, of clay
the distance of God and man

How I wish I could shout
to tell God, Christ
that I am not made of this stuff;
Born for heaven above
wanting only to walk with him
all the days of my life
wanting to bear his witness
wherever I am sent
going freely, joyfully
in response to his great love

of the world

of the world, of the dust
mired in my clay
stuck on the path I walk
questioning each day

wanting to break freed
to fly on eagles’ wings
wanting to walk with the Christ
into the heavenly light

Hard to make the claim

How I wish I could shout
standing on a mountain top
the words of Christ;
freed from this earth
but it is hard
to deny my clay
when I am weighed down
mired in this world
the weight of my sin
my dust, heavy
hard to breathe
stuck in this time, this place
far too much of this world
wanting to fly, hobbled,
stumbling on the way

I am not of this world – v2

If we turn, if we believe
we can turn from the world
into the arms of God
we can sing, we can dance
sharing with Jesus
rising from the dust
claiming our mantle
the gift of his grace
we are not of this world
we are born to last
to rise on wings like eagles
to soar to heaven above
above this mortal coil
in the blessing of God’s love

Are we of this world

Are we of this world
the indictment of Christ
if we truly believe
are we destined to die

Christ offers us
a way to paradise
turning from the world
and picking up our cross

Alone - 3

I all of history
from the beginning of time
could there have been another moment
feeling so alone
up on the cross
the weight of our sin
the shame, the ridicule
dying, abandoned
in the darkness of that hour
alone on the cross
preparing for us a way
yet alone, so alone
the unblemished lamb
the Son, the sacrifice
forsaken by God

You are of this world
of clay, of dust
bound by our past

focused on the earth
dying if you do not believe

You are from below

Of the clay, the dust
of the world, of sin
you are from below
gripped by the world
held from the Father
by the sin of this life
only by his grace
his mercy, his might
able to be redeemed
to come to the light

When I Am exalted

When I Am exalted
when I am in heaven
when I have been lifted up
as a sacrifice
all of my teachings
my walk here with you
all will be explained
all will be understood

The authority of heaven
the power of the Spirit
all I did here with you
in God’s plan alone
just as was foretold
I came to heal the nations
to seal the breach
since the Fall of Man

When you have Lifted Up the Son of Man

When I am gone
when you have lifted up
when you have placed me on the cross
when I have risen

When you have lifted up the Son of Man
when I am exalted
all that I have told you
will be understood

Then you will know me
the authority of my teaching
then you will know
who I truly am

sure of one thing
God is my witness

my authority for all I say

God’s One Truth – v2

Not among many
yet different paths
God’s one truth
to set us free from death
the love of God
manifest in Christ
coming to earth
to break our chains
captives of our sin
all of us fallen
needing grace to live
There is no other

Alone - 2

Christ knew sin
the judgment on us
though he had been faithful
walking ever with God
never alone
until that moment
crying out in pain
alone on the cross
the weight our hands
resting on him
transferring our transgressions
the weight of our sin

about never being alone
living our faith
always pleasing to God

of being alone
crying out to God
forsaken on the cross

The sacrifice of Christ

The sacrifice of Christ
the truth to set us free
all of us in chains
the shackles of our sin
Set free by Christ
by his coming to earth
giving himself
dying in our place

Not happy words
but joy in our hearts
loving us this much
to give himself for us
going to the cross
raising us from the dust
walking with our Savior
leading us to go, to do
offering others our witness
his work in me and you

You Speak Alone

The leaders, the people
failing to see Jesus
to understand his truth
the truth of who he was
failing to see
to understand scripture
the voice of God
come alive in their witness

You speak alone
where is your witness
how can we believe
when it is your word alone
failing to see
to understand his power
all that he did
by the authority of God

What is your proof

Standing in judgment
unbelieving ears
unable to see him
to believe he was God
the leaders rejecting
demanding another witness
to prove he was the Son
the one foretold
that the prophecy was fulfilled
not believing the signs
demanding further proof

Awakening Their Spirits – v2

Musings from the survivors
crying out for their nation
remembering our folly
when nation fights nation

For the dead we pray
joining with their people
sharing the words with them
our energy with theirs

That they would be calmed
their kinsmen released
awakening their spirits
as we fall to our knees

In this we hope for our neighbors
that love would flow like honey
that rivers of joy surrounding
lifting their loved ones up

Awakening their spirits
set free from this life
the toils and struggles
cast off, left behind
as they are lifted up
