A Field of Ferns – v4

Above the bluff, the scar, the washouts,
clear-cut of the high, power lines,
a forest of pine opens westward,
where the deer come to graze,
a beautiful broad flat plain.

Surrounded by these conifers,
a field of ferns, rising on sturdy,
erect stalks, broad leaves,
to drink the pure shafts of light,
falling briefly, through the canopy.

The tall mast pines, straight and true,
red-brown needles, a carpet between,
the ferns, the regal trees, an evenness,
of surface, short pile rug, northward,
to Canada, as far as the eye can see.

Green ferns, red-brown needles,
green-brown trunks, broad,
bright green needles, new growth,
above, reaching to blue sky,
the arc of the dome.

Within the arms of the cedars – v2

Within this place set apart, isolated,
A place set apart, a living prayer closet,
a carpeted room, a space enclosed,
within the embrace, the arms of the cedars,
where I enter into prayer, into worship.

A hedge of protection, hidden,
A circle of sorts, a cathedral,
a natural enclosure, alive,
where I can pray, meditate,
where I can commune with God.

The sorrow of the ferns – v2

An Amazon rainforest denuded,
the verdant woods down the road,
An empty lot now clear cut
a landscape convulsed in pain.

The sorrow of the ferns
belying the natural state,
The character of this place
before the hand of man.

Ice more than Frost – v6

ice more than frost
on the flat surfaces;
flat and slanted
against the wind
even the doorway

all covered, frozen,
encased in white, in ice
temperature still falling;
well below freezing
that dark, dark night

melting only by applying
the exhaust of the engine;
the car awakening slowly
from its dormancy, frozen,
from its mask of ice

The crunch of the frost – v3

Tiny forests, fields,
of granulated sugar,
pearls of frozen dust
brushed onto the soil

The crunch of the frost
under my heavy footsteps,
a way shown, remaining,
exposed across the blacktop

A Field of Ferns – v3

Above the bluff, the scar,
clear-cut of the power lines,
a forest of pine opens
where the deer come to graze
a broad flat plain.

Surrounded by conifers,
a field of ferns, rising on sturdy
erect stalks, broad leaves
to drink the shafts of light
falling briefly, through the canopy.

The tall mast pines, straight and true
red-brown needles, a carpet between
the ferns, the regal trees, an evenness
of surface, short pile rug, northward,
to Canada, as far as the eye can see.

Green ferns, red-brown needles,
green-brown trunks,
bright green needles
above, reaching to blue sky
the arc of the dome.

Crystals alive – v4

Forming in the freezing,
in the darkness, stillness,
born into the sunlight;
Rising, striving,
crystals alive
rising, in motion
a chemical reaction;

Alive, a colony,
a growing together
like seedlings rising;
A field of ferns forming
from the dust, the chaos,
rising from the ground,
crystals at their birthing;

But a breath, soon ending,
temporal, fleeting,
before the warming;
melting, dissolving
crystals descending
collapsing, falling, hidden,
returning, back to the dust.
