Maybe too small for the
image
A cathedral of pine
The sky the vaulted ceiling
No buttresses on the side
Maybe more a chapel
A prayer closet for one
Hidden from the roadside
Separated for love
On a floor of needles and
dust
Hidden within the lush
branches
Cloistered from the world
I sat in a solitary cathedral
of pine
Five trees encircled my
prayer
Limbs knitted like arms
wrapped around my reverie.
Walled off from the world
around me
Watched only by squirrels,
By the young lady slippers,
the ferns,
Birds, salamanders, insects,
The other denizens of the
Small island in the lake
A hidden sanctuary for one
Ringed by the hemlocks, the
firs,
High and low-bush blueberry
plants
A stillness in the chaos
Of that summer long ago
Somewhere to ponder,
reflect,
Slow down and commune
With the hand of the creator
By the still, calm lake.
A chapel, a prayer closet
Separated for love
