A Cathedral of Pine

On a floor of needles and leaves
I sat in a cathedral of pine
Five trees encircled my prayer
Limbs knitted like arms
wrapped around my reverie.

Walled off from the world around me
watched only by squirrels,
birds, salamanders, insects,
the other denizens of the
island in the lake

A hidden sanctuary for one
ringed by lady slippers, ferns, blueberry plants
A stillness in the chaos of that summer
somewhere to ponder, reflect,
slow down and commune
with the hand
of the creator.
