On a floor of needles and
leaves
I sat in a cathedral of pine
Five trees encircled my
prayer
Limbs knitted like arms
wrapped around my stillness.
Walled off from the world
around me
watched only by squirrels,
birds, salamanders, insects,
other denizens of
the island in the lake
A hidden sanctuary for one
ringed by lady slippers,
ferns, blueberry plants
a quiet of summer
held for those moments
A stillness in the chaos
somewhere to ponder,
reflect,
slow down and commune
with the hand
of the creator.
