the example of the towel and basin

His words to them at the table
asking for words, given action
his bowing at their feet
gathering the towel, the basin
You call me “Teacher” and “Lord”
for that is what I am
yet watch what I am doing
more important than the words

Letting the words of Jesus sink in
sitting here at the table with us
I have washed your feet
I am your Master
You should wash each other’s feet
No servant greater than the Master
Our Savior bowed before us
the day before he was crucified

These words of Jesus
his actions washing our feet
a more than subtle message
of what he means by love
To love as he loved us
becoming the servant, the Lamb
fulfilling all prophecy
doing all we can for our neighbor

They are in pain, hurting
the world caking on the mud
the need for healing, for touch
to be valued in this life
You should wash on another’s feet
follow the example of Jesus
becoming the servant, washing
washing his disciples’ feet
